Curses are made to be broken. For centuries, generations of Everlys have seen their brightest and best disappear, taken as punishment for a crime no one remembers, for a purpose no one understands. Their tormentor is a woman named Penelope, who never ages, never grows sick - and never forgives a debt. Ten years ago, Violet Everly's mother left, determined to break their curse, and never returned. Now Violet must find her mother, or she will be taken in her place. To do so, she must descend into a seductive magical underworld of power-hungry scholars, fickle gods and monsters bent on revenge. She must also contend with Penelope's quiet assistant, Aleksander, who she knows cannot be trusted - and yet to whom she finds herself undeniably drawn. Tied to a very literal deadline, Violet will travel the edges of the world to find Marianne and the key to the city of stardust, where the Everly story began . . . Filled with magic, stardust, and a shockingly dark heart, this is a stunning standalone fantasy perfect for fans of The Ten Thousand Doors of January, The Starless Sea and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.

I really enjoyed the whimsy and beautiful writing of this novel. Reminded me of an adult Stephanie Garber. The ending left me a bit, wanting, but I enjoyed the journey. Gorgeous world and gorgeous cover!

I actually enjoyed this light read. The author explores the ways in which we adjust our stories and concepts of love to protect ourselves from difficult truths.

According to Penelope, ostensibly a teacher, actually something much more and terrible, the Everly family owes her a blood debt; Violet sets out to remove the curse, sometimes aided, sometimes betrayed by Penelope‘s acolyte: Alexander. The plot gets a bit muddy at times.

My three day weekend started today! 🥳🎉🎉🎉 I've got tons of reading planned! And of course lots of tea and snacks! 🤭 It is sunny today, which is super nice! And even though it's a little bit chilly, reading at the park has been the perfect way to spend this Friday! 💕📚

Bk9 of my recent #BookMail is a fantasy.A young woman descends into a magical underworld of power-hungry scholars & fickle gods bent on revenge to break her family‘s curse. For centuries Everlys have seen best vanish, payment for a crime no one remembers & a purpose no one understands.Their tormentor Penelope, never ages or gets sick & never forgets a debt. Violet is the last Everly, given 10yrs to find her mother before the family is gone forever.

I admit, I was drawn in by the cover.

Violet Everly‘s family is cursed. A curse was put on the family thousands of years ago. Each generation the family has to hand over the most promising Everly to Penelope, an ageless woman. The ‘sacrificed‘ Everly would then become a scholar in Penelope‘s world. No one knows what the Everly family did thousands of years ago to be cursed, but everyone in ⬇️

julesG the family knows that there has to be a sacrifice once every generation. Marianne, Violet‘s mother, was supposed to be the last generation‘s sacrifice, but she vanished when Violet was ten. Penelope gave Violet's uncles ten years to find Marianne, or she would come to collect Violet. Now Violet needs to find her mother or break the curse to free the Everlys, otherwise she'd be sacrificed to Penelope. That is my take on what this book is about.

julesG I did not like the book. I was confused by the flowery language that packs a lot of words into a sentence which eventually doesn‘t tell me anything. Further confusion was created by the omniscient narrator switching between different POVs from one paragraph to the next. All that is interspersed with fairy tale interludes. Set in present tense, so that distinguishing between what timeline (present or past) and which character I was following was⬇️ 10mo
julesG confusing. It just didn‘t work for me.

World-building is essential in fantasy novels, yet within all that flowery language I couldn‘t find an explanation for how the magic system works, what kind of curse was put on the Everly‘s and why, and quite frankly, by about 60% of the book, I didn‘t really care anymore. I still finished the book but only to see what explanation there might be for the curse. I still don‘t know.

julesG I hope that the finished book was less of a mess than the ARC I read. 10mo
Leniverse Sounds more like a first draft than an ARC! That really is a gorgeous cover though. 10mo

Lovely beach walk today, but we didn‘t outrun this “distant” storm 😅 …. It was awfully nice to come home to put on dry clothes and read a few chapters of this ARC (which is giving me Starless Sea vibes 🥰)
