A young Harvard law student falls under the spell of a charismatic judge in this timely and thrilling novel about class, ambition, family and murder. Madison Rivera lands the internship of a lifetime working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. But Madison has a secret that could destroy her career. Her troubled younger brother Danny has been arrested, and Conroy is the judge on his case. When Danny goes missing after accusing the judge of corruption, Madisons quest for answers brings her deep into the judges glamorous world. Is Kathryn Conroy a mentor, a victim, or a criminal? Is she trying to help Madison or use her as a pawn? And why is somebody trying to kill her? As the two women circle each other in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game, will they save each other, or will betrayal leave one of them dead?

Since this is called a legal thriller, I wasn‘t sure how much I would enjoy, but it was really good! Fast-paced and suspenseful, I read it within a couple of days. #hauntedshelf #hexesandcrows @Catsandbooks

This book is about strong, intelligent women who do not back down. I hope to someday be as fearless and well-dressed as Kathryn Conroy, and as forward thinking as Madison. Law school, high ranking public officials and killer (wink wink) wardrobe.

A little different than what I was expecting, not necessarily in a bad way. It‘s a pretty quick read but with no real twists or surprises.

I've enjoyed a few of this author's books. This one is right up there with those. Once I started it and didn't want to put it down. It's a page turner. A legal thriller but not in the courtroom. Behind the scenes.

Five stars

I lacked some interest in the story because I didn‘t like how the two female leads were written, but I stuck with it because the story the two women were set in was good. The ending was great so I‘m glad I hung in there.

Campbell‘s latest May start a bit slowly, but the ending absolutely zooms by! Madison, a Harvard law student has the chance to intern with the judge who inspired her to pursue the law— the (not-so) Honorable Judge Kathryn Conroy. To secure her internship, a small lie spirals. Madison may need to be taken by the shoulders and shook a bit, but the story hooks the reader right in! I absolutely couldn‘t put it down by the latter half! Truly thrilling!

I am always drawn to books set in Boston so I took a risk on another mild thriller. I have to say I liked that the main characters were women and that it was law heavy instead of spies. Overall, nice, quick read with good ending.
