I think maybe this authors style just isn‘t for me. I keep trying and failing with her books. I feel like the writing just doesn‘t get my attention at all and I fall off very early on with her books. This was just okay. It took way too long to go anywhere and it was a struggle only a quarter of the way through for me to keep going.

This book felt like it was inspired to create its story from an aspect of Little Fires Everywhere. I liked the potential storyline but it felt like a debut lacking credibility with several events not fully flushed out. Jasmine‘s character would have been served by a bit tweaking to create a more sympathetic protagonist. Beautiful cover art though!

I know I‘ve been absent more or less for so long. Especially for #LitsyLove but I will try to be more active and present. I‘m about 30 reviews behind. Probably more than that. But I think I‘ll just try to focus on posting going forward otherwise I‘ll drop off again 😩

Big life update: my driver‘s test is Monday! I failed my December test. Fingers crossed for this time. Hopefully I‘ll pass before I turn 34 this year 🥲

This book is so good. Even better than I had hoped. I had heard a lot about this book and was so excited to have won a copy on Instagram. It's got a lot but so easy to follow. With a bit of a twist that I didn't see coming. Not that I would have even ventured a guess at this. It was just so good.

This quick read simply wasn‘t for me. The twists were predictable and the ending was too pat. I had no time at all for the Anthony storyline.

Reading this one during the busy holiday season had me staying up way too late to finish it. I enjoyed this story about motherhood, desperation and sacrifice. It also has a bit of a thriller feel. I particularly enjoyed the character of Rebecca who had good intentions, but often fell short...the perils of of the competing priorities of modern motherhood. In spite of finding the ending just a little 'too pat' I really enjoyed this book. 4/5 stars

It was slower to get into, but when it took off, I was all in. A story about the sacrifices of mothers and a woman's place in the world whether you fulfill the mother role or don't and the judgment they face while trying to juggle it all.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“I was a leftover woman, I realized. After everyone else had carved away what they wanted to see in me and taken what they desired, I was all that was left.”

Kwok created an intriguing & stirring portrayal of two seemingly very different mothers with more in common than expected. There‘s a great twist that I only started to suspect right before it was revealed. It‘s a propulsive story that also gives the reader a lot to think about! 🎧

Jasmin has come to the US illegally from China to flee an abusive situation and search for a lost family member. Much of her story is really interesting and I enjoyed the listen, but I have a few issues. In several places, it‘s just too melodramatic for me, plus the ending is too pat and a bit silly with one character making an unbelievable sudden flip that is too easy.

squirrelbrain I got sent this on #netgalley but gave up after the first chapter. I think it was when the word ‘pulchritude‘ was used that I decided it was a bit too over-wrought and flowery for me. 😬 13mo

This was so damn good. It would have been a one-day read, even if I hadn‘t started it the day it was due back to the library.

I devoured this book in one weekend. The plot twist toward the end caught me off guard and the thrilling conclusion wrapped up the story very well.
