The Narrow Road Between Desires
The Narrow Road Between Desires | Patrick Rothfuss
13 posts | 10 read | 4 to read
#1 New York Times-bestselling phenomenon Patrick Rothfuss returns to the wildly popular Kingkiller Chronicle universe with a stunning reimagining of "The Lightning Tree." Expanded to twice its previous length and lavishly illustrated by Nate Taylor, this touching stand-alone story is sure to please new readers and veteran Rothfuss fans alike. Bast knows how to bargain. The give-and-take of a negotiation is as familiar to him as the in-and-out of breathing; to watch him trade is to watch an artist at work. But even a master's brush can slip. When he accepts a gift, taking something for nothing, Bast's whole world is knocked askew, for he knows how to bargainbut not how to owe. From dawn to midnight over the course of a single day, follow the Kingkiller Chronicle's most charming fae as he schemes and sneaks, dancing into trouble and back out again with uncanny grace. The Narrow Road Between Desires is Bast's story. In it he traces the old ways of making and breaking, following his heart even when doing so goes against his better judgement. After all, what good is caution if it keeps him from danger and delight?

As much as I usually love Rothfuss books, this one just didn't hold my interest. I found it hard to see where the story was going and for this reason it was close to being a DNF for me. I did stick it out though reluctantly. 2.5⭐️ and feel that is generous.
A lot of people liked this one. I'll just call it as not my cup of tea.

TheSpineView Forgot to mention this is my #DoubleSpin selection for January. @TheAromaofBooks 3mo

Another fun Rothfuss novella, but not the third book of the Kingkiller Chronicle 🙂

Thank you B&N … I love Bast! And this is my first Rothfuss autograph. I hope to listen tonight while I work. Yes I have the audio too. 😁♥️

Ok - I wasn‘t going to read it. I was going to boycott. But alas, I am weak and this was great. It reminds me why we are all so upset- his writing is just that good. Maybe publishing this novella will get him writing more! He could write book 3 on toilet paper and I would read every word. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I know we‘re all disappointed this isn‘t book 3. But it is Pat‘s beautiful writing, and Nate Taylor‘s illustrations are fantastic. I loved it. I love Bast and his interactions with the town‘s children. I even shed tears at the end. I‘m glad I didn‘t let my disappointment keep me from reading this, and I hope writing it gave him the kickstart he needed to get back in his writing seat.

Robinsonbrandon129 Hello there, how are you doing? Can you kindly respond here? 5mo

I‘d forgotten how much I love Patrick‘s writing. It‘s just a taste rather than the many course meal I would like, yet it was still enjoyable.
From the endnotes it seems that he has frustrations or anxieties about his writing as well. I‘ll wait.

I‘ve been out of cell service until last night, but got to listen to this on my way up and back. Strange story taking place over one day. Until the end I felt like Bast was both hero and predator. My physical library hold came in while I was up north so I‘m going to reread right away. Rothfuss‘ words have always sat with me better in print than audio for some reason.

KathyWheeler I‘ve never listened to Rothfuss‘ work; I wonder if I also need his writing in print. 5mo
BethM @KathyWheeler I can usually do either or as long as the narrator is good- and he is. But I struggled with Name on audio too, but was completely enthralled in print. 5mo

I am absolutely loath to give this man money, but I‘m probably going to break let‘s be real.

AlaMich It‘s hard to keep up with all the toxic masculinity, but what has Rothfuss done? 5mo
BethM @AlaMich to my knowledge nothing. He just honestly doesn‘t seem to give much of a shit about writing book 3- like ever. I find that hard to stomach. Either do it or just tell the world you have no desire to do so. 12 years is a lot. 5mo
AlaMich @BethM ah. I have exactly the same feelings about George RR Martin!! 5mo

BethM @AlaMich I don‘t disagree! At least he puts out content and has said x amount of pages are written. Rothfuss has written one other short story in that time, and has vacillated between the book is being edited and I have three chapters. (edited) 5mo
Soubhiville I don‘t know what‘s going on with him… I did hear he was doing a novella about Bast though, is that what this is? The kicker is it‘s not even necessarily new material- it‘s a longer version of a short story released in the Rogues anthology like 13-14 years ago. 🤷‍♀️ I‘ve given up on him and George. But yeah, I‘ll probably buy this too. When he DOES write it‘s too damn good. 5mo
Soubhiville Yep, it‘s the Bast thing. Sigh. I hope he‘s back on a writing roll and can finally get to book 3. 5mo
Meshell1313 @Soubhiville couldn‘t agree more! 5mo
MidnightBookGirl I‘m disappointed that he hasn‘t been continued the story, but yeah, I‘ll probably buy it too. 5mo
KathyWheeler I am getting really frustrated with both him and Martin. I will probably get this, but it‘s really annoying that it‘s not the 3rd book. 5mo
BethM @Soubhiville yup! I loved Slow Regard. @KathyWheeler @MidnightBookGirl I‘ll hold out til paperback 😂 5mo
KathyWheeler @BethM I loved Slow Regard as well. It‘s probably the reason I‘ll get this new book. Also, I love Bast. 5mo
