This was something to listen to….just okay for me. I was far more interested in the contemporary timeline and unfortunately it encompassed only a fraction of the plot.

But, yay for strong female characters!

First off I'm a total fan of the Maisie Dobb stories so I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this book and a new character. My fears totally unfounded loved this book. Inhaledit in one sitting! #bookspin @thearomaofbooks

Good historical mystery/thriller. Winspear gives us another remarkable heroine in ex-spy Elinor White. Set in 1947 with flashbacks to WWI and WWII. I‘ve read and enjoyed the first few in her Maisie Dobbs series. Might need to get back to those soon.

I have read in total 18 books now by Jacqueline Winspear and I have loved them ALL! This book was no different in the beautiful writing and wonderful main character. You follow Elinor as she is pulled into both WWI as a 14yr old then later in WWII in her upper 30‘s. You see the effect that life had on her life and what drives her to be the woman she is. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

1. My youngest daughter (5th grade) started last Thursday 8/10. My oldest is going to be a sophomore in college she will start 8/21.
2. My current book The White Lady has school setting in it, as part of it was when she went to school then as she became a professor herself. Though it‘s not the main setting in the story.

My reading snuggle buddy today! Meet Oliver! This little stray guy wondered into our lives as a kitten right before Thanksgiving in 2021. He‘s been my baby and the best snuggler ever since.

Given the times we are in White is the last name of the main character. The book bounces from WWII to after the war. Good story to remind us of the consequences of relying on assumptions.

Winspear‘s strength is her capacious knowledge of the World Wars, which is on display in her latest. Here, we have a retired spy/assassin who is trying to build a life away from the service. Try as she might, she cannot avoid getting involved with other humans, another thing that is common on Winspear‘s work. She has an uncanny way of writing characters who think they want to be alone but who end up forging important and long-lasting friendships.
