🎧📚 Still makes me laugh AND Chris Barrie (Rimmer) is a FABULOUS narrator!!

On a mining ship 3 million light years from Earth we have a human (Lister), a service Android (Kryton), an evolved cat (Cat), a hologram of a dead crew mate (Rimmer) and a senile computer (Holly).

Let the hilarity begin!

They don‘t make it back to Earth but they meet a lot of interesting people & monsters on the way!

Always going to be ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Omg, I LOVE Red Dwarf!! ❤️🤣 3y
Twainy @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm and the audiobooks are read by Rimmer and the theme music is played a several times. I‘ve got my stack of videos next to the TV …. 😁 3y

🎧📚 I‘ve read this book & now I‘ve listened. Chris Barrie is Rimmer in the British TV series. Great impressions of Lister, Hollie, Cat & Kryton.

The omnibus is in my top 10 Sci-Fi books of all time.

If you have no intention of watching the show then you might enjoy this book if you liked Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy or Doctor Who but beware it‘s a bit more adult & silly.

WHY ISN‘T THERE A BIG FINISH OR NOVELIZED SERIES? 😭

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+

BethM This sounds right up my alley! 4y
Centique I loved this show! Will have to look for this. 4y
Twainy @BethM it‘s a trip. I can‘t think of anything to compare it to. Maybe it‘s more like Monty Python meets Doctor Who. HEE hee. It‘s more about the few life forms (?) on the spaceship. 4y
Twainy @Centique ahhh if you‘ve seen it then you‘ll recognize the book as it‘s not new adventures but expands on the first seasons. That show still makes me laugh. 4y

July was a good month of reading. Managed 14 books. The best was tagged above. I DNF a couple this month but never count them. 75 left to read to hit my Goodreads total.

Dave Lister has ended up on one of Saturn's moons and he wants to go home. Joining the Space Corps should get him there when he ends up on Red Dwarf but thats when it all goes wrong.

Having watched the TV series I knew I was going to love this and I did. I loved finding out how Lister came to be aboard Red Dwarf. The story is well written and can easily see each character saying the words. A must for any fan of the show. 5*

Last read this when I was a teenager. I've always loved the show and this first novel captures the feel perfectly. There's a few chapters around the middle where it jusy feels like they've slapped the scripts in which gives it a lazy feel. But most of the book either features original material or takes scenes from the show and builds on them. The novel gives more depth to Lister's feelings of loneliness and Rimmer's near insanity. Very funny.

TK-421 I ❤️ Red Dwarf!! I reread all the books last summer and we binge watch the entire series almost every year 😊 7y
myers85 @TK-421 Glad to see another Dwarfer here! One of my all time favourite shows. Love quoting it to people whether they get it or not! I decided to reread all the books this year! 7y

I was at a loss for this prompt until I remembered Kristine Kochanski's pinball #smile. “It wasn't a beautiful face. But it was a nice face. It wasn't a face that could launch a thousand ships. Maybe two ships and a small yacht. That was, until she smiled. When she smiled, her eyes lit up like a pinball machine when you win a bonus game. And she smiled a lot.” #QuotsyJan18

"He thought about the magnificently unlikely string of coincidences which had brought him into being. The Big Bang; the universe; life on Earth; mankind; the zillions-to-one chance of the particular egg and sperm combination which created him; it had all happened. And what had he done with this incredible good fortune? He'd treated Time like it was urine, and pissed it all away into a big empty pot."

I found one! Finally. Here is an actual #inagalaxyfarfaraway for #maybookflowers : the first novel based on TV sitcom Red Dwarf. Dave Lister is the last human alive, stranded 3 million years from home with only a hologram, a creature evolved from cats and the ship's computer for company (And eventually a mechanoid too). The audiobook is read by cast member Chris Barrie, who is a great mimic and can (and does) do the rest of the cast brilliantly.

Krisjericho Oh, I need to listen to this!! 8y
Verity @Krisjericho It's a little spooky how good Chris is at doing the others' voices. Particularly Craig Charles. But then there is one series where one of the cast (Craig I think) was ill on DVD commentary recording day and all the others just did impressions of him for the day... (edited) 8y

Lots of #artificialintelligence in the Red Dwarf tv series, the Talking Toaster being my favorite, so I'm assuming it's also in the books (which I should probably read someday, being a huge fan of the TV show) #aprilbookshowers

Bookwitchery Loved the show. My spawn loves it too, has actually watched it with us since she was in elementary school. (Probably a bit young for it, but she really gets Brit humor.) 8y
Librarianaut @Bookwitchery my son loved it too! He watched it with me when he was eight or nine; I am sure any inappropriate stuff went right over his head. 8y
Joanne1 Red dwarf, ah so good. 8y

When I saw #CatsvsDogs was today's #OctPhotoChallenge, I immediately thought of Cat! He's as vain, shallow, self-absorbed, & unintentionally hilarious as a real cat & just as frustratingly lovable! I also remembered Jake, The Cat from Outer Space. I loved the movie as a kid! I haven't read it yet, but I hope it's fun. #catsftw

Krisjericho I love this pick! 8y
Balibee146 Oh i loved those Red Dwarf books....wonder where they went!! Lost in a house move i think... 8y

What a silly, over the top space adventure! Somehow I'd previously been under the impression that sci-fi was serious and full of technical science jargon I wouldn't understand (I'm going to blame my inability to grasp the stuff on all the various sci-fi I watched with my brother when j was little). But I'm so glad to be proven wrong. What a perfect compliment to my first few weeks of grad school! Big thanks to Liberty for the recommendation!

Carol OMG Red Dwarf! 💖💖 If you liked the novel you might also enjoy the TV show. 8y
megt @Carol I really want to check out the show! I'm especially intrigued to see how The Cat and his over the top glamorous self is portrayed! 8y
Carol Definitely my all-time favorite TV show. Cat is simply the best. 8y

bookishchelle I enjoyed this book and it is a rare time where I have watched the TV series before the book 🤓📚 We are having a Red Dwarf marathon as I am typing this. Cat is awesome! 8y
megt @bookishchelle what a coincidence! I'm glad to see rave reviews for the show. It's definitely one I'll need to check out. 8y
