Charlotte Brontė
Charlotte Brontė: A Life | Claire Harman
On the 200th anniversary of Charlotte Brontė's birth, Penguin is publishing the definitive biography of this extraordinary novelist, by acclaimed literary biographer Claire Harman Charlotte Brontė's life contained all the drama and tragedy of the great Gothic novels it inspired. She was raised motherless on remote Yorkshire moors and sent away to brutally strict boarding school at a young age. She watched helpless growing up as, one by one, her five beloved siblings sickened and died; by the end of her short life, she was the only child of the Brontė clan remaining. And most fascinating and tragic of all, throughout her adult life she was haunted by a great and unrequited love - a love that tortured Charlotte but also inspired some of the most moving, intense and revolutionary novels ever written in the English language. Charlotte was a literary visionary, a feminist trailblazer and the driving force behind the whole Brontė family. She encouraged her sister Emily to publish Wuthering Heights when no-one else believed in her talent. She took charge of the family's precarious finances when her brilliant but feckless brother Branwell succumbed to opium addiction. She travelled from Yorkshire to Europe to the bright lights of London, met some of the most brilliant literary minds of her generation (Elizabeth Gaskell, Charles Dickens, William Thackeray), and became a bestselling female author in a world still dominated by men. And in each of her books, from Villette and Shirley to her most famous, Jane Eyre, Charlotte created brand new kinds of heroines, inspired by herself and her life, fiercely intelligent women burning with hidden passions. This beautifully-produced, landmark biography is essential reading for every fan of the Brontė family's writing, from Jane Eyre to Wuthering Heights. It is a uniquely intimate and complex insight into one of Britain's best loved writers. This is the literary biography of the year; if you loved Claire Tomalin's Charles Dickens, this event is not to be missed.

Happy birthday, Charlotte Brontƫ ?

Great article by Claire Harman whose biography of Charlotte has been on my radar since the first time I heard about it and I'm no closer to reading it ? https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/books/features/author-charlotte...

I‘m going with a classic #iconic figure, Charlotte Bronte. I can‘t imagine growing up in such an isolated place and yet crafting arguably one of the best loved novels ever. This recent biography is on my tbr list - another book I started when it first came out, had to put down, and haven‘t had a chance to pick it up again. I adore the cover! #Movember

Also, I woke up to see so much concern over personal fears on not doing Litsy right - be you! ā¬‡ļø

Librarybelle These fears show me I‘m in the right place, because I honestly felt the same way, yet feared (haha) mentioning it. Did I post my cats too much? Anyone super annoyed over my buddy read posts? Then, I thought, just be myself. This is my happy place, and I really feel blessed to know all of you. You‘ll never know how much you help me! ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø to all! 5y
Sace @Librarybelle I wonder if people have the same fears on bigger social media outlets. The fact that we are having this conversation makes me think not. We are less "anonymous" here. I like that intimacy 5y
ljuliel Agreed. You guys just post. The older I get, the more I realize I can‘t please everyone , so I just say what I think. I‘m not too concerned about winning popularity contests. Life‘s too short. Be yourself. @librarybelle @Sace (edited) 5y

Librarybelle @Sace Agreed. We‘ve developed a close relationship in here compared to other social media sites. 5y
TheAromaofBooks One of the things I love about Litsy is how personal it feels. I think the lack of political discussions around here really helps us all to focus on more happy things than other social media! Also, side note, I don't really think it's possible to post about cats too much, so keep up the good work. :-D 5y
Billypar I like the cats: my apartment doesn't allow them, so I feel like I'm living vicariously through the #catsoflitsy And to my knowledge, no one has suggested that we ditch the books and change the name to Catsy (though, wouldn't be bad as its own social media app šŸ˜ø) 5y
Mollyanna I love the focus on books with the accoutrement of life on Litsy!! It‘s a beautiful balance. And I totally agree, you be you, and @Librarybelle You are awesome! 5y
batsy Charlotte! ā¤ļø I want to read this, too. 5y
Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks @Billypar Catsy! Now that‘s an app I would download! I think animals are perfect reading companions and love to see everyone‘s pets. 5y

I just got a new phone and can't figure out how to take screen shots. šŸ™„ So this is an audiobook that I own and I LOVED it! I collect all things Bronte and thoroughly enjoyed this book. Normally for my audiobooks I use #libro and #hoopla through my library. I'm a big fan of multitasking and audiobooks are perfect for that! šŸ˜

I šŸ–¤ this book so hard! Never read a biography of any of the Brontes before, and their story is even more enchanting and tragic than I could have imagined. It‘s delightful to know the Bronte sisters often wrote and read their work to each other at home, and heartbreaking that all their lives ended so soon. Claire Harman tells the story of my fave Bronte with such sparkle and poignancy that it reads like a novel. More wonder that it‘s all true.

alysonimagines @MellieAntoinette Thanks for encouraging me to ditch my TBR for this gem! šŸ’Ž (And it took me much less than a month to read, I‘m just slow to post my review.) 6y
KarouBlue @alysonwrites So good, right! And the book design is beautiful! So glad you enjoyed it!! šŸ¤— šŸ¤— ā™„ļø 6y
alysonimagines @MellieAntoinette Yes, it‘s beautifully written and beautifully designed! Speaking of the Brontes, have you seen the PBS miniseries, To Walk Invisible? I finally finished watching it yesterday. I ā¤ļø the cast, especially the sisters, and the acting is great. But I‘m glad I read this book first, because the miniseries doesn‘t tell the whole story. 6y

Loved this book! I had to step away from it times because the emotional pieces of the book and her broken heart made a really sorrowful read, and it was so intense I felt really sucked in. You couldn‘t help but to root for her at times, get angry because of her principals, but also what was so amazing was that she has gotten out on the world and was quite well versed.

ā€œThe dining room at the Parsonage had been turned into something like a book factory, as the sisters paced round the table, reading, listening and discussing each otherā€˜s work, and sat bent over their portable desks for hours, writing.ā€ ā¬…ļøThis is so much better than my wildest dreams about the Bronte sisters! šŸ’œšŸ’œšŸ’œ

Decided to go to Book People on my lunch break this beautiful spring day and look what I found in the clearance section! Charlotte Bronte helped me survive adolescence, so I had to give this book a good home. šŸ–¤ Now when will I squeeze this into my overbooked TBR? šŸ˜‚šŸ“ššŸ“ššŸ“š

KarouBlue Loved this one! 6y
alysonimagines @MellieAntoinette Nice! Charlotte keeps staring intensely at me from the cover and now I‘m trying to decide if I‘ll interrupt my scheduled TBR to dive into her story sooner rather than later. šŸ˜… 6y
KarouBlue I vote Do It!! šŸ˜‰ 6y
alysonimagines @MellieAntoinette Lol I couldn‘t resist any longerā€”delayed my bedtime last night and tore through the prologue. I‘m in! šŸ˜ (edited) 6y

Hartman‘s biography of Charlotte Bronte shows how rebellious Bronte could be - gaining fame from her works, despite (or because of) her somewhat isolated life on an English moor. The more I read about her (and I do need to read this one), the more I like her spirit. She overcame obstacles, wore her heart on her sleeve, and crafted one of the most remarkable stories ever written. #SheWill #NoFemmeber

Billypar Biographies like this are great because it's probably so difficult for us now to imagine how works by Charlotte Bronte or her sisters were actually viewed when they came out. 6y

I've never been very interested in Charlotte Bronte, but was given this book so I thought I should read it. It was okay, but I'm glad to have finally finished it! You definitely understand why the Bronte sister's books were to gloomy...

As part of my @bookriot Live trip to NYC, I stopped by the Morgan Library to catch the Charlotte Brontë exhibit (after seeing @rincey trip pictures). Really excellent - they have the Branwell portrait of the three sisters on loan from the U.K. ?

Plus bonus Martin Luther exhibit (I think my Lutheran card would have been revoked had I not looked around). ?

I am very much a newbie when it comes to biographies, so I can't say that I know what makes a good one. But this was so compelling and told the story of Charlotte's life in such a detailed, yet well rounded way, that I was hooked from the beginning. What a life she had, what a remarkable woman!

I weep for Charlotte. Harman has given a rounded picture of an extraordinary, intelligent, spirited and flawed woman whose faith sustained her through terrible, endless trials, and who, with her sisters, wrote some of the world's most beloved novels.

Very readable new biography of Charlotte Brontë (and Emily and Anne, too since their lives were all closely intertwined) concentrating on how Charlotte's emotional and intellectual like influenced her writing.
