Pickpick

Woke at 2 am and had to finish this one. The sole woman detective on the murder squad fears the other Ds are trying to sabotage her. As she begins her investigation into what appears to be a standard domestic murder she begins to question everything. #Shewill have to trust her frayed instincts and #shewill need to learn who she can rely on to solve this case. No need to ask whether French will deliver a page-turner. #shewill #nofemmeber

Billypar Excellent synopsis! I can't wait to try French- hopefully 2019 is the year 🤞 6y
Cinfhen I‘m 💯reading this book in Jan! It works for #Booked2019 #FeaturesAFemaleDetective #SetInIreland/IrishAuthor 6y
Blaire @Billypar you definitely should! She delves much more into the inner life of the detective and how that impacts their investigations than a typical mystery. Everyone I‘ve read has been impossible to put down. 6y

Blaire @Cinfhen yes!! Perfect choice. I‘m sad I‘ve finished the series. Will be picking up Witch Elm soon. I didn‘t see the #booked2019 prompts but will check them out. Looking forward to participating. 6y
Cinfhen We haven‘t released them yet 😜I just gave you a sneak peek💕 6y
Blaire @Cinfhen can‘t wait to see the rest!! 💕💕💕 6y

So Lucky: A Novel | Nicola Griffith
post image

I‘m only a few pages in to this book.Mara is a successful woman , runs a major AIDS foundation, but in rapid succession, her wife leaves her, her closest friend must fly to New Zealand to continue her post doc work, and Mara is diagnosed with MS.Mara is very capable and I have the feeling #shewill be able to fight to make the best of what life has handed her. #NoFemmeber

Melissa_J I think this book is closely modeled after Griffith‘s own life. (edited) 6y
Billypar I like it when novels zero in on a moment in a character's life where a bunch of things go wrong at the same time and you witness how they fight through the bleak circumstances. 6y
Leftcoastzen @Billypar I‘m almost done ,that is what it‘s like.very good. 6y
Cinfhen Sounds depressing as hell 😫 6y

A stack of nonfiction books by women who want to change the world, stereotypes, attitudes, laws, practices, politics and society. A stack of books that shows the power of women, of a #SheWill mentality, of bad ass writers with opinions. Hopefully this stack will only keep growing over time 📚

#NoFemmeber

Purrsistently Love love LOVE love 6y
TrishB A great stack 👍🏻 6y
laurieluna I've only read 2 of these. Need to change that! 6y

ephemeralwaltz Love it! 6y
Emilymdxn Great stack! Hunger is one of the best books I‘ve ever read. When I finished it I wrote to Roxane Gay to tell her how much it meant to me, it was so good 6y
Libby1 Women and Power is SO good. 6y
JennyM Such a great and powerful stack! 6y
sprainedbrain Love this! 🙌🏻 6y
Billypar Great bunch you have here! Agreed @Emilymdxn - I loved Hunger, I feel like Gay has such a deft grasp on social issues, and she writes about her own life with just as much lucidity, and an insight that even good memoirs don't always have. 6y
batsy I love this 💜 6y
Kalalalatja @Purrsistently @TrishB @ephemeralwaltz @JennyM @sprainedbrain @batsy 🙌🙌 @miralunasbooknook I loved most of them, so I can get behind that! 👍 @Cinfhen I‘m going crazy with all the hints, when is the list of prompts coming?? 😂😂 @Emilymdxn @Billypar I loved Hunger, but couldn‘t finish Bad Feminist, but that might have been a timing issue. I loved Not That Bad, too 👌 @Libby1 I loved it! 6y
Cinfhen I hope soon!!! I‘m ready to drop the list!!!! 6y

Hoosier Hysteria: A Memoir | Meri Henriques Vahl
post image
Pickpick

Meri Henriques is a freshman from NY when she arrives on campus at Indiana University in 1963. She is shocked to witness the rampant racism, as she becomes part of the first class to live in integrated dorms.

Meri is forced to confront whether she wants to lay low in order to try and receive a scholarship to stay in school, or stand up for what she believes in.

Cinfhen I just saw another blurb about this book ~ it does sound interesting. Thanks for sharing 6y
Redwritinghood My Alma mater. Thank goodness a lot was different when I went there in the late 80s. 6y
LauraBytheBook @Redwritinghood I was there in the late 80‘s too! And I agree it was better in the 80‘s. 6y
Billypar Terrible to contemplate what it was like to be on the receiving end of so much hate when you're just trying to get an education 😔 6y

Mary Shelly is marvellously brought to life in this gothic illustrated account of her life - her hardships & struggles in early life, her inspiration for creating Frankenstein, and her relationship with Percy Shelly, a tormented poet & married man, which caused her being banished by her family. Despite all these, Mary was able to channel her grief into a book which is arguably considered the ‘first true science fiction story.‘

Cinfhen Your blurb makes me want to read tagged book immediately. I‘ve always been weary of reading Frankenstein but her life seems so much more interesting 6y
erzascarletbookgasm @cinfhen Please read it! A fascinating account of her life and stunning artwork. 🖤 6y
Cinfhen Stacked!!! 6y

Reading this lil‘ gem with my book club this month, and we are each going to try and add a 16th suggestion!
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie received a letter from a childhood friend, a new mother who wanted to know how to raise her baby girl to be a feminist. This is Adichie‘s letter of response: fifteen suggestions—direct, wryly funny, and perceptive—for how to empower a daughter so #SheWill become a strong, independent woman.

tjwill I love the idea of sharing a 16th suggestion! Share with us when you decide on yours! 6y
Billypar Perfect! She's been such a strong voice for feminism- I need to read this and We Should All Be Feminists. 6y

Hartman‘s biography of Charlotte Bronte shows how rebellious Bronte could be - gaining fame from her works, despite (or because of) her somewhat isolated life on an English moor. The more I read about her (and I do need to read this one), the more I like her spirit. She overcame obstacles, wore her heart on her sleeve, and crafted one of the most remarkable stories ever written. #SheWill #NoFemmeber

Billypar Biographies like this are great because it's probably so difficult for us now to imagine how works by Charlotte Bronte or her sisters were actually viewed when they came out. 6y

This is why I love my Facebook friendship circle: one of my friends who works on the philosophy of the ancients is translating the Iliad for fun and posting the latest bits for us. 😍😍😍

I hope #shewill get to translate the whole epic. (Bit of a cheat for #nofemmeber !)
