United States of Japan
United States of Japan | Peter Tieryas
26 posts | 12 read | 21 to read
Decades ago, Japan won the Second World War. Americans worship their infallible Emperor, and nobody believes that Japan s conduct in the war was anything but exemplary. Nobody, that is, except the George Washingtons a shadowy group of rebels fighting for freedom. Their latest subversive tactic is to distribute an illegal video game that asks players to imagine what the world might be like if the United States had won the war instead. Captain Beniko Ishimura s job is to censor video games, and he s tasked with getting to the bottom of this disturbing new development. But Ishimura s hiding something He s slowly been discovering that the case of the George Washingtons is more complicated than it seems, and the subversive videogame s origins are even more controversial and dangerous than the censors originally suspected. Part detective story, part brutal alternate history, "United States of Japan"is a stunning successor to Philip K Dick s"The Man in the High Castle." Mehso-so

Despite the cover, sadly big mecha robots don't play a big part in the book. In an alternate America that lost WWII, the Japanese rule the west coast and the Nazi rule the east coast. A watered down version of The Man In The High Castle, where it's a video game not a movie that contains the subversive idea of an American victory. 3 💥💥💥

RamsFan1963 @BookishMarginalia I finished, but it won't let me go beyond saying 25 books - 1 book to go. I've tried updating it several times but it won't change. 3y
RamsFan1963 @BookishMarginalia Of course, having said that, I tried to update it again and it worked perfectly lol 🤪🤪🤪🤪 3y

RamsFan1963 @BookishMarginalia My stupid phone still says 25 books, but on my laptop it says 26 lol 3y

I am posting one book per day from my extensive TBR collection. No description. No reason for wanting to read it. Some are old, some are new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

Sloppy but bat-shit amazing. Giant robots, questionable main characters, give me liberty or give me death.

I don't read (or speak) Japanese, but I couldn't resist these. In Japan they released a full-sized paperback and also these two small editions that split the book into two volumes. Now to find a way to display them.

I've been super inspired by my friend Peter Tieryas' book, United States of Japan so I made these cards for him - just for kicks.

A solid punch to the emotional gut, mostly because it asks some excellent questions that are very relevant to our world today. The characters are excellent, the world-building is topnotch, and the writing is lucid and a joy to read. It is dark, yes, and you will come out of it thinking dark thoughts, but that's a good thing. Deffo a must read. Full review here: http://wp.me/p21txV-u4

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm adding this one to my Goodreads TBR list now, so many interesting posts from it in my feed. 8y
kammartinez @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I hope you enjoy it as much as I did :D. It can be a hard book to read because of the themes it deals with and some of the gorier imagery, but it is such a powerful punch to the gut in the very best of ways :). 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @kammartinez That sounds like a book I'd enjoy. 8y

There is plenty of darkness and violence in this book, but there's also a bit of room to chuckle (albeit with an awareness of the dark place that chuckling comes from).

Sunglasses to honor the summer gone by, and one of my favorite teacups to honor the monsoon that's started to swing in :). Either way, excited to start reading this because GIANT ROBOTS!

Mayread That koi teacup is perfection. 8y
kammartinez @Skiles I know right? It's technically meant to be a purely decorative piece since it hasn't got a handle to speak of, but I've learned I could get away with using it by holding it around the body of the cup, like you do with traditional Japanese handle-less cups :). 8y
Sue Hello giant robots!!! 8y
kammartinez @Sue That was the main draw for me, truth be told ;D. 8y

Crazy & amazing alternative history where the Axis won: Japan takes the West, Nazis the East. The world is rich & fascinating, as are the characters. There's some jumping between the past & present that deepens plot & character. Wish the ending were more conclusive. I couldn't put it down.

I was really excited for this one but then couldn't get into it. I kept picking up my other books instead. Might have just been in the wrong mood for it, so calling it quits for now.

DaveNeufeld Dang, I've been circling this one for a while, but maybe I should hold off :\ 8y
