The Shattered Tree
The Shattered Tree: A Bess Crawford Mystery | Charles Todd
13 posts | 14 read | 25 to read
World War I battlefield nurse Bess Crawford goes to dangerous lengths to investigate a wounded soldiers backgroundand uncover his true loyaltiesin this thrilling and atmospheric entry in the bestselling vivid period mystery series (New York Times Book Review). At the foot of a tree shattered by shelling and gunfire, stretcher-bearers find an exhausted officer, shivering with cold and a loss of blood from several wounds. The soldier is brought to battlefield nurse Bess Crawfords aid station, where she stabilizes him and treats his injuries before he is sent to a rear hospital. The odd thing is, the officer isnt Britishhes French. But in a moment of anger and stress, he shouts at Bess in German. When Bess reports the incident to Matron, her superior offers a ready explanation. The soldier is from Alsace-Lorraine, a province in the west where the tenuous border between France and Germany has continually shifted through history, most recently in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, won by the Germans. But is the wounded man Alsatian? And if he is, on which side of the war do his sympathies really lie? Of course, Matron could be right, but Bess remains uneasyand unconvinced. If he was a French soldier, what was he doing so far from his own lines . . . and so close to where the Germans are putting up a fierce, last-ditch fight? When the French officer disappears in Paris, its up to Bessa soldiers daughter as well as a nurseto find out why, even at the risk of her own life.

I promise that I read more than serial mystery series. 😉 But that's what has been keeping my attention during the COVID craziness. I love Bess Crawford. This wasn't my favorite of the series, but I'll definitely continue.

#weeklyforecast @Cinfhen
Hoping to finish the Bess Crawford series (currently reading the tagged book), and then get to a couple random titles that have been languishing on the TBR far too long. Also may read a few Kindle books as well.

I've clocked a little over 5hrs for #24B4Monday, which is pretty solid considering what a busy weekend it has been!
@Andrew65 @TheReadingMermaid @jb72

Cinfhen Looks like you‘re enjoying the series 😻 5y
BeansPage Doing very well considering hun 👏 5y
Andrew65 I need to read the Bess Crawford Series. Fatherland is one of my favourite books. Well done on the time given your weekend. 👏👏👏 5y

TheAromaofBooks @Andrew65 - Bess Crawford has been a solid series. Not stunning, but the setting is done quite well and the mysteries are decent. Looking forward to Fatherland as I have heard good things - it's been on the list for a long time!! (edited) 5y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - yes, if you like historical mysteries, these have been quite enjoyable. The World War I setting is done very well. 5y

This might be my favorite Bess Crawford that doesn't take place at the Front. When Bess hears an injured man in a French uniform speak German, she doesn't know what to think. Is he a spy? And how is he involved in a set of old murders? It'll take all Bess's ingenuity to find out!

Returned it before I took a picture. This wasn't my favorite installment as it was missing some of the core characters that I've come to expect. While these books are very good they're also pretty similar in format which may not have been so evident to me if I'd read them in actual time versus having just discovered them; & with WWI starting to wind its way down I wonder what's on the horizon for Bess

Looking forward to what she gets up to next.

Vbrrgirl I‘ve read the Inspector Rutledge books by Todd. Need to give Smith a try. 7y
Vbrrgirl Not Smith, Crawford -gonna be a long day! 7y
ralexist @Vbrrgirl - Bess is similar to Maisie Dobbs in feel, though I believe Maisie has covered more time and a larger variety of settings and crimes. Still a great bunch of books to curl up with though :) 7y

Another solid entry in the series. I did however miss her parents and Simon in this one. She was pretty much on her own (except for the American, Captain Barkley) in Paris solving basically two mysteries this time...a spy caper and an 18-year-old multiple murder case. My, that Bess is a very busy girl! 😉 I‘m on the library waitlist for the current one...looking forward to it! 4/5 ⭐️

Andrew65 This is another series and author I have yet to get to. Too many books too little time! 7y
SilversReviews I always enjoy his books. 7y
robinb @Andrew65 @SilversReviews yes, I‘m happy I found this series, and I‘d like to try the other Todd series next! Ian Rutledge, I believe? 7y

SilversReviews @robinb yes. Ian Rutledge. 7y
robinb @SilversReviews @Andrew65 have either of you read the Rutledge series? 7y
SilversReviews @robinb yes. I like Rutledge better than the nurse ones. 7y
Andrew65 @robinb No not read either series yet. Loaned it from the library before but just never got to it before it was recalled. Too many books too little time! He will be high on my list for 2018. 7y
robinb @Andrew65 I feel the same way. Too many books, and you‘ve also got to live your life, right?! 😜 7y
robinb @SilversReviews oh good, I‘ll look forward to those! Thanks! 7y
Andrew65 @robinb You mean reading isn't our life? 🤔 7y
robinb @Andrew65 good point! Sometimes I wonder...🤣🙌 7y

Picked this one up at ALA last year. While I loved the concept - a WWI battlefield nurse who solves mysteries - I had trouble getting into the book. The mystery in this particular book didn't really work for me. Maybe I'd like some of the other books in this series better. :(

Enjoyed more than I expected. Plot was tighter than the last few in the series.

Taking a much need Dombey and Son break 700 pages in. Todd's Bess Crawford series is a bit more contrived and not as satisfying as the Ian Rutledge mystery, but it doesn't keep me from reading them.

Didn't hate it, didn't love it. Overall, I thought it was just so so.
