A Feast for Crows
A Feast for Crows | George R. R. Martin
THE BOOK BEHIND THE FOURTH SEASON OF THE ACCLAIMED HBO SERIES GAME OF THRONESFew books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin's monumental epic cycle of high fantasy that began with A Game of Thrones. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace . . . only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.A Feast for CrowsIt seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears. . . . With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King's Landing. Robb Stark's demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still existor they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out. But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising facessome familiar, others only just appearingare seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead. It is a time when the wise and the ambitious, the deceitful and the strong will acquire the skills, the power, and the magic to survive the stark and terrible times that lie before them. It is a time for nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages to come together and stake their fortunes . . . and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guestsbut only a few are the survivors.

I loved it very much, I‘m super immersed in this world of Westeros and I‘m loving the journey George is taking us on.
I just wish he would drop the rest of the books in a near future.

I can‘t decide if Cersei is a feminist character or not. I lean toward not. I‘m not placing any moral value on her feminism. She‘s obviously a villain in this book. You could argue that her ascent to Queen Regent in a male-dominated society is the epitome of feminism. But the one nagging detail for me is her constant lament at not being born a man. Regardless, I‘m glad to be done with this slow-moving 34-hour political drama. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

KathyWheeler This was the one book in that series that bored me to tears. 2y

Alright, cleared some storage on my phone to start this slog through Cersei‘s Revenge. I have grown to like Jaime Lannister more. But am really missing Tyrion in this one.

I‘m more than a quarter through this, and I realize that GRRM has grown tired of his Westeros story. No Tyrion—except in third-person exposition. One chapter for Sansa. Two chapters for Arya. This was a book about the dullest character, Cersei Lannister—a power-hungry narcissist who somehow is more cunning and vile than her murdered father. I need more House Stark. So glad I am not trudging through a physical read.

KathyWheeler This was the most boring book in the series! As long as they are, I had no trouble reading the others; this one, however, was an absolute slog. 2y
Awk_Word_Smith @KathyWheeler And who knows if he‘ll ever finish the series? Thanks for dashing what little hope I held on to in finishing this. ARGH! 😂 2y
KathyWheeler @Awk_Word_Smith Sorry! I liked the next book better even if it is a little overly long. 2y

I made it to the end. 🥱😴 I‘ll rate it so-so because it did move the story along a bit. I need a break before I read the next book in the series.

Ok, not really serious. 😆😜 But man, this book is such a disappointment. Where is Tyrion? Please tell me the next book is better!

Ruthiella I remember this one and A Dance With Dragons as being very slow and instead of bringing the story in, Martin kept expanding it with new characters and seemingly tangential events. But also, at that time I thought Winds of Winter would be published in a couple of years...😢 2y
KathyWheeler This was the only one of those books that bored me to tears. I finished it but I mostly didn‘t care about what happened in it. 2y
TrishB There are some very, very, very long bits….. 2y
Sparklemn @Ruthiella @KathyWheeler @TrishB I just rewatched the TV series and was looking forward to finding out how the book differed and getting more of the color behind my favorite characters that you can‘t capture on film. Not really happening. I think I‘m going to skim the rest of it 🤷‍♀️ 2y
KathyWheeler @Sparklemn probably best. This book was such and odd experience for me because I flew through the rest of them but this was a slog! 2y

723 p. Took me longer than the previous ones. The author decided to do a 2-parter and put half of the characters in one book, and half of them - to the next one. Not sure if lack of Daenerys had something to do with my slow reading

Might get to finish this one today since I have start back in the office 😢 I‘ve been “work from home” since mid March. I‘m lucky to still have my job but I‘m not excited about the 45 min to hour commute 1 way. I‘ll be honest though it will be nice to get back to a little pre-COVID reality.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Good luck! It‘ll take a minute to settle back into being back 😅 I did a half day shift the other day and slept for 12 hours (and I wouldn‘t call my job physically taxing) after. I think it was a combination of worrying about being on time/wearing a mask for an extended period/moving around rather than sitting at a PC/chatting to another human - 🤔 4y
TrishB Good luck 👍🏻 been working at home since mid March too and doesn‘t look like we‘ll be back until January! I miss the office. 4y
OrangeMooseReads @thegirlwiththelibrarybag getting back in the office routine is going to take time I forgot how annoying some of the other people are lol my job isn‘t physically tasking either. Thankfully I don‘t have to wear my mask when I‘m in my cubicle at my desk. 4y
OrangeMooseReads @TrishB that is a long time. I miss the routine and feeling like I‘m working. But also ugh the office lol 4y
marleed I‘m retired now but keep wondering what it will be like for those returning to their offices after so long away. I‘m retired now but wonder if I would have found some coworkers more or lesser tolerable. Perhaps just more-or-less tolerable ;) 4y

I think this will be my last of the series. I don‘t like the changes in language and style that Martin has made. The first 2 books were good, the 3rd ok, and this one is just not good. The story and characters are good for the most part, but the writing is terrible. He started turning the women into nothing but objects for the men. So much rape and sexual assault and sex in general. I don‘t know why the change but it‘s not good.

BGam Absolutely I agree... this one dragged me so long... but I heard A dance with dragon is good. 4y
Literary_Siren If you‘ve read the Outlander series, I would equate this book to The Fiery Cross. 4y
OrangeMooseReads @Literary_Siren I haven‘t read that series 4y
Literary_Siren Oh bummer! I highly recommend it! 4y

Really enjoyed this book. I‘ll admit, I audiobooked this one due to the length of it. Apart from the reader saying “Breyeenne” it was enjoyable! Lots of variation from the series here, although I don‘t know how the author will finish it in two books. It feels like the storylines are just starting to unfold!

🌼🌼🌼 since I couldn't find the stars I m giving 3 flowers to this book. It was a slow read but not an uninteresting book. In fact I loved reading Brianna's journey and Samwell's journey to the citadel. I hated Cercie who is getting stupider and crueler because she has no one to control her, Tywin dead, Tyrion gone and Jamie being a spineless twin and in love, she is excreting cruel juice in Kings Landing.

TheSpineView ❤❤❤ Love that bookmark! 4y

This one is going very slow... or because my mind is more on the news regarding Covid 19

AFTER THOUGHT: Even though there were pages and pages of unnecessary past stories of unimportant lords, ladies, squires etc, which I gladly skimmed through, it was very absorbing.. I think this book should have gone faster if there was a summary after every chapter 🐵

Lesanne I had a hard time with this one too. If you can make it through, Dance With Dragons is better, IMO. Good luck! 4y
BGam @Lesanne u r right, this is going very slow! There are some parts which I m just skimming through because by now I know that they are of no use to the overall plot of the story.. 4y

A Feast for Crows carried over a bit between 18/2019. I'll aim to have The Stand in as 2020's big read. 📚 I did get to seeing all and the end of HBO's Season 8! 🐲 Once the Winds of Winter actually comes, I'll resume then, on A Dance with Dragons. 😜
