Detective Inspector John Rebus investigates a cold case that has turned red hot once again. John Rebus, as incapable of settling into his retirement as he is of playing by the rules, investigates a cold case from the 1970s involving a gorgeous and wealthy female socialite who was found dead in a bedroom at one of Edinburgh's most luxurious hotels. No one was ever found guilty, but the scandalous circumstances of the murder have kept the town talking for over forty years. Now, Rebus has his own reasons to investigate, but his inquiries quickly make him some very dangerous and powerful enemies who will stop at nothing to ensure that the case remains unsolved and the gossip falls on deaf ears.

I've read the DI Rebus bks for many yrs +with bk 21 rebus, retired + in poor health finds himself again part of an investigation involving the Edinburgh criminal World as an historic murder links to money laundering. Thru the series villain Big Ger Cafferty + Rebus have fought each other, in retirement they still hate each other but there grudging respect - frenemies??

Moves at a fast clip. A cold case from the 1970s resurfaces in the present. Fox has been promoted, even though he feels Clarke should have got the job. But the gang still manages to get together to solve the case. The present-day angle has internantional ramifications. Good stuff.

This is the 21st book in the series, it deals with the death of a women back in 1978, plus Daryl Christie, who took over from Big Ger Cafferty on the gangster side of Edinburgh is attacked. DI Clarke and DI Fox are to investigate, plus Rebus does his own meddling as a civilian. Another good and enjoyable book from Ian Rankin. #crimebooks

My library system opened up for the first time yesterday: appointment only, and only a small number of buildings. But lovely to go back!

Edinburgh has a #castleonthehill that I only saw from afar and didn‘t go inside. I guess I‘ll just have to go back then! Meanwhile, now that I know the lay of the land, I might read some more Rankin. #wanderingjune

Costa on Leith Walk, Edinburgh. Finally reading my first Rebus story, somewhere near the end of the series......I seem to do things about 10 - 15 years behind the curve!

JanuarieTimewalker13 Me too. Only typically 30 years. Lol 6y

This book has the atmosphere of a really successful high school reunion: Rebus, Siobhan, Malcolm Fox and Big Ger are all back to solve anther crime or two. It does not have the brooding urgency of earlier novels in the series, but it is well plotted and I found myself truly interested in the solutions to the mysteries.

Not for newcomers to the series (too much backstory) but definitely recommended for fans of Rebus. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was the best book by Ian Rankin that I have read for a long time. I love the fact that the baddie recurs as well as the cops. A really good read!

Now this is a prime example as to why Rankin and Rebus are my favourite. A cold case; a beating of a gangster; a disappearance of a banker and a few missing millions? How does it all tie together?? Rebus will figure it out, even if he has to step on a few toes to get answers.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

charl08 Can't wait to get this (but will have to!) 8y
StellaDz @charl08 it was so good! I was slightly disappointed with the last one, but this one is back up to the level I'm used to! 8y
charl08 @StellaDz good to hear. Thanks! 8y

I thought Rebus by himself was awesome. But Rebus, a retired/can be considered slightly dirty cop, and Malcolm Fox, a previous Internal Affairs investigator?? Solid. Gold. #bromanceblooming #currentlyreading #ianrankin #faveseries

When two favourite men in your life are hankering for a date but you don't know which to choose first?? #bookishproblems Who should get first dibs? My long-term, Rankin? Or the new beau, May?

Could I make this sound any weirder?? LOL 📚🤓 #bookboyfriends
