The Last Love Song
The Last Love Song: A Biography of Joan Didion | Tracy Daugherty
11 posts | 1 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
In The Last Love Song, Tracy Daugherty, the critically acclaimed author of Hiding Man (a New Yorker and New York Times Notable book) and Just One Catch, delves deep into the life of distinguished American author and journalist Joan Didion in this, the first printed biography published about her life.Joan Didion lived a life in the public and private eye with her late husband, writer John Gregory Dunne, whom she met while the two were working in New York City when Didion was at Vogue and Dunne was writing for Time. They became wildly successful writing partners when they moved to Los Angeles and co-wrote screenplays and adaptations together. Didion is well-known for her literary journalistic style in both fiction and non-fiction. Some of her most-notable work includes Slouching Towards Bethlehem, Run River, and The Year of Magical Thinking, a National Book Award winner and shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize, it dealt with the grief surrounding Didion after the loss of her husband and daughter. Daugherty takes readers on a journey back through time, following a young Didion in Sacramento, through to her adult life as a writer interviewing those who know and knew her personally, while maintaining a respectful distance from the reclusive literary great. The Last Love Song reads like fiction; lifelong fans, and readers learning about Didion for the first time will be enthralled with this impressive tribute.

Leftcoastzen @2BR02B I think Slouching towards Bethlehem (essays) and Play It As It Lays (novel)Documentary Joan Didion:The Center Will Not Hold is great on Netflix 6y
2BR02B @Leftcoastzen I hadn't heard of that documentary, but I'll check it out. Thanks! 6y

Watched and loved the documentary Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold. Then spent over $100 on the biography and her complete works because I'm not ready to leave her company.

DivineDiana I watched it yesterday and was enthralled with Joan! I own two of her books, but watching the doc had me wanting more! 6y

Really loved the Didion Bio ,very detailed , gives you a good sense of 60's and 70's west coast/east coast scenes.Though both Didion and Dunne don't seem defined by or overly impressed by it all.😏Since Joan is 82 and recently published another book the story is not over.Alvah Bessie ,Spanish civil war volunteer,7 seas press of Berlin, published paperbacks in 60's.Lefty writers ,clean design, hard to find.

For the Hour 42 #24in48 dinner party challenge.

The five guests at my perfect literary dinner table (from left to right, including action figures): Dorothy Parker, William Shakespeare, Joan Didion, Oscar Wilde, and Mindy Kaling.

...I really wish I could make this happen. Veiled insults, clever wit, and snark would just be flying everywhere.

joan didion 💙

sistercity What first book would you recommend for someone who has never read Joan Didion? Asking for a (ah, uh, um) friend... 8y
darynne @sistercity Play It As It Lays is my favourite of her novels! We Tell Ourselves Stories In Order To Live is an extensive collection of essays! Year of Magical Thinking and Blue Nights are extremely beautiful and heartbreaking memories. 8y
sistercity So, starting with any and all of them is a good strategy. Brb, adding to stack 😉 8y
