Skies of Ash
Skies of Ash: A Detective Elouise Norton Novel | Rachel Howzell Hall
10 posts | 10 read | 11 to read
Los Angeles homicide detective Elouise "Lou" Norton and her partner, Colin Taggert, arrive at the scene of a tragic house fire. Juliet Chatman perished in the blaze, along with her two children. Left behind is grieving husband and father Christopher Chatman, hospitalized after trying to rescue his family. Chatman is devastated that he couldn't save them. Unless, of course, he's the one who killed them. Neighbors and family friends insist the Chatmans were living the dream. But Lou quickly discovers the reality was very different. The flames of adultery, jealousy, scandal, fraud, and disease had all but consumed the Chatmans' marriage before it went up in smoke. Lou's own marriage hangs by a thread. Soured by the men in her life, Lou is convinced that Chatman started the fire. Her colleagues worry that her personal issues are obscuring her judgment. With very little evidence regarding the fireand rising doubts about her husband's commitment to monogamyLou feels played by all sides. Was the fire sparked by a serial arsonist known as The Burning Man? Or by the Chatmans' son, who regularly burned his father's property? Searching for justice through the ashes of a picture-perfect family, Lou doesn't know if she will catch an arsonist or be burned in the process. Skies of Ash is another thrilling read from author-to-watch Rachel Howzell Hall. "Gives voice to a rare figure in crime fiction: a highly complex, fully imagined black female detective." - Kirkus Reviews, starred review on Trail of Echoes At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book 2 in Det. Elouise Norton series. Good mystery. Lou, an LAPD detective, investigates a possible arson/murder and tries to sort out her rocky marriage.

This series was recommended in a diversity course for librarians as a read-alike for the Bosch series. I really like it. Our mc, Lou Norton, is interesting and flawed, and the mysteries are twisty. I finished this one up while out walking today; it was such a gorgeous day. #audiowalk

I don't know why it's taken me nine months to pick up the second Det. Eloise Norton mystery when I loved the first one, but I'm excited to dig in.

I'm working my way through this police procedural series set in Los Angeles. Detective Lou Norton is witty, clever, brash, and smart. She's great at her job. But not so much at her personal life. I love the complicated layers of this character and the plots so far have been exciting and unexpected. Recommended for anyone who likes mysteries but especially recommended if you love cop shows like Law and Order! #diversereads

MicheleinPhilly I have the first one of these. 5y

3.5/5
Just finished the 2nd book of Hall‘s Detective Elouise Norton series. Arson, betrayal and of course, murder – this book has all the makings of an entertaining read. Her writing is clear and to the point, making it easy to breeze through this. I think I liked the 1st book a little more since it was more closely related to her personal life. But overall, I am liking this series and I really enjoy reading about LA (my hometown).

Another solid mystery starring smart, sarcastic, flawed black female detective Lou Norton. Mental note: request book 3.
