The Black Echo
The Black Echo: A Novel | Michael Connelly
For LAPD homicide cop Harry Bosch -- hero, maverick, nighthawk -- the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal. The dead man, Billy Meadows, was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who fought side by side with him in a nightmare underground war that brought them to the depths of hell. Now, Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city to the tortuous link that must be uncovered, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Joining with an enigmatic and seductive female FBI agent, pitted against enemies inside his own department, Bosch must make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, as he tracks down a killer whose true face will shock him.

I've been watching the Bosch TV series and thought to give the book that started it all a try. It's a bit old-skool with some jarring references, but the underlying plot was twisty and intriguing - and it didn't hurt to have Titus Welliver in my head.
A dead army buddy Bosch knows from his days as a tunnel rat in Vietnam ends up linked to a bank heist the FBI is investigating.

Decent story full of suspense and twists. I was surprised by some of the insensitive language used for a book published in 1992 because I forget what things were like back then. Vietnam is an important part of the plot & it blows my mind to think that 1992 was closer to the Vietnam era than we are now to 1992. The 90s were just yesterday, right?

The ending of this first Harry Bosch book just doesn‘t make sense in terms of events that happen in later books. Nevertheless, it was still good. Harry is, as always, a real pain. This was our road trip book, and we finished it on the way home from Dauphin Island. Continued with State of Terror on my walks; so much has happened that I can‘t believe I still have 6 hours left! #audiowalk #audiodrive

My husband wanted to start the Harry Bosch books, so the first one is our road trip book. We took a trip to the beach, and I listened to State of Terror on my walk and read Lessons in Chemistry while sitting by the beach. It was extremely foggy there! #audiowalk

I enjoyed the latest books enough that I decided to go back to the beginning. Not bad. This is also when I found out that there's a long-running TV series about Bosch. Shows how much I pay attention to TV, I guess.

After finishing the latest Bosch and Ballard novel, I figured I should get to know Bosch from the beginning.
I ♥️ him, and his experiences in the Vietnam War really came to the fore when he‘s called to the scene of a suspicious death. Connelly lead me down a rabbit hole about “tunnel rats” and the LAPD in the early 90s. Quite a read! Lots to be said about PTSD and its debilitating effects.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

EvieBee @TrishB I can‘t wait! 2y
DivineDiana I have always loved this David Hopper painting, but had never noticed “Phillies” painted at the top of the building. This has sparked my curiosity! Also decided that I should try a Harry Bosch book too! (edited) 2y
EvieBee @DivineDiana I‘ve never known the name of this painting until I read this book. It‘s a lovely painting. I‘m so glad you‘re going to try Bosch. It‘s a bit heavy but the payoff seems worthwhile. 2y

After listening to Trunk Music, I decided I‘d go & read or listen to Bosch from the beginning. Bosch is a great character, as is Los Angeles .When he goes to Barney‘s Beanery and / or Musso & Frank , I want to go back right away. The city is so significant in these books, brings back memories from my time living in Long Beach & exploring the LA area.

I just had to check out the source after binging Bosch in its entirety. Thoroughly enjoyable, will definitely continue with the series. It is a little dated and there are some moments of serious cringe, but a fast moving, intricate, and interesting plot with some great characters makes it a pick!

CoffeeNBooks I love Bosch! I haven't read any of the Bosch books, though. I've only read the Lincoln Lawyer series. 3y

So after binging (and loving) Bosch on Prime, I thought I should read some of the source material. I'm only 8% in, and so far so good. BUT there have been multiple descriptions of Bosch's driving routes through LA, and in my head I immediately hear Armisen and Wigg in The Californians. It's slightly distracting 🤣🤣🤣

LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch is that smoking, badly behaving American police we all know. He was also in Vietnam, and so is the man who was found murdered. In fact, Harry knew him. But, who killed him and why? I had a hard time getting into this book, mainly because the subject does not really interest me. The book had nice twists and turns, and I enjoyed it towards the end.

🎧 Audible special edition of the first Bosch book. Yes I own and have read the original but the actor does a great job of narrating the new books so ... take my money Audible. It was great just like the newer books he narrates! There‘s also an interview with Titus Welliver after the book. If you like Bosch, books and/or show you‘ll probably enjoy this! Loved it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️2/3

Quarantine PSA: Now might be the perfect time to dive into a new series. Connelly has a massive backlist, not to mention the fab show (new season, April 17), and crossovers between his various series. I‘d always put off starting the Bosch books because there were so many to catch up on, not anymore!

Harry Bosch, Hollywood homicide detective, catches the call for a dead body in a drain pipe. The victim is a face from the past and he is knows that it‘s a murder made to look like a heroine overdose.

I was positive this would be a pick for me as l‘ve a read a couple later Bosch books and the Mickey Haller series. I only wish my library had the audiobook on Libby as CDs are more of a pain. I will still pick up the next one on CD though, lol.

Overall this was a good read, but at times it was a bit of a chore to get through and not helped by the acronyms used regularly in the book. I did enjoy the resolution of the story. I do know this is a high quality series so perhaps this was just Michael trying to find his style with his first book. I will see how the series develops in the next couple.

Started reading The Black Echo as part of a Group Read I am doing on Librarything. We are aiming to read all the books in The Harry Bosch Universe in order.

Currently at 6 hrs 19 minutes in the #24B4Monday Readathon and at 377 Pages in the #SummersEndReadathon (target 4000 Pages). This is after reading more than half of After The Party by Lis Jewell this afternoon / evening.

EadieB @Andrew65 I'm still reading The Kill and finished the 1st part of Bosch. Also listened to Recursion by Blake Crouch on audio. I'm up to 11 hrs and 6 mins. and read 330 pages. Your speed seems to be increasing and my is still slow! lol 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB 11 hrs + is a great time. Yes Read intensively this afternoon / evening. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 You should be able to make up more time tomorrow or Sunday. You're doing great though in your page count! 5y
See All 7 Comments
Andrew65 @EadieB Hopefully. The page count often depends on the book and the words on it some take a lot of reading to finish a Page, others less so. Some of the books I had today were of the shorter kind, and the audiobook went through the pages quite quickly. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 Yes audio usually goes quicker for me too! 5y
Clwojick You‘re crushing it! Way to go! 5y
Andrew65 @Clwojick Starting to catch up after a slow start, only managed just under 3 3 hours in the first 18 hours, but read around 5 hours in the next 6. 5y

The schedule of this one is quite even due to the structure of the book. Today‘s section is shorter.

Half watched an episode of Bosch on Prime with my mom and dad. I was also reading Thick.

What I call my parents “murdering shows”, I‘ve never really been into, though. My mom has also read most of the Bosch books, which is not my thing either.

BUT, Bosch fans, what do you think of the book versus the series?

Megabooks @TrishB I think my mom originally liked the books more, but the series grew on her. She and dad are on the new season, which I think is 5. 5y
