Forgot to post this book! It was a very good read and I wish I could retain the information I read and use it in the real world. I mostly remember “mirroring” and “how can I do that?” in negotiations. I need to read it again, absorb it more because holidays interfere with my readings 🤪

I first heard of Chris Voss and this book in Alan Alda's podcast.
In the book, he draws on his experience as a hostage negotiator to explain how and why his techniques and strategies work, and offers some examples of how these techniques can help in more ordinary situations. I appreciated his take on active listening & the reminder that "the adversary is the situation and that the person you appear to be in conflict with is actually your partner".

I can‘t say enough good things about this one! Might be one of the best #nonfiction I‘ve read this year. EVERYONE needs good negotiation skills. These recommendations come from a former FBI hostage negotiator. He has since moved on to teaching business negotiation at Ivy League schools. A few things stuck with me from this one, but the tone of the author was exhausting and condescending. I read pieces of it, but skipped quite a bit.

Get them to say “that‘s right” by explaining what you think they are saying.

Don't respond with a hard no. For example:
That‘s a very generous offer, given our budget limitation. However, I don‘t think that‘s adequate compensation for the responsibilities on my plate.

Avoid compromise in order to find creative solutions📙

It‘s not the fault of the book, but this just wasn‘t what I was looking for. It‘s definitely more of a self help book, and less of an analysis. Half of the scenarios Voss picks out are very interesting and the other half are supremely boring.

Highly recommended for sales people or anyone who has to negotiate for a living. Much of the books reads more like a memoir than a self help book, following the author‘s experience through some very high stakes hostage negotiations. The lessons he learned though are relevant for many situations and he does a great job tying his experience to more approachable day to day experiences. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. #nfnov #nonfiction

#nfnov #til that getting a “yes” too fast puts the other person on guard. Better to start with a “no” which makes them feel as if they are in control and gets to the objection faster. Also, “you‘re right” only confirms your opinion but “that‘s right” indicates that you understand their position and puts them at ease. In sales and negotiations, aim for no and that‘s right more than yes and you‘re right.

Started out better than it ended, but still it was a worthwhile read. Contains great anecdotes and a good framework.

Very good read on negotiations

This is probably the most useful influence book I have ever read. The book is filled with interesting stories about hostage negotiation which keeps the reader on the edge of their seats. The book has practical advice that can be used on day to day situations. I am already using the techniques taught in the book. Can't recommend this enough.

This book is phenomenal. The author does a fantastic job balancing the many lessons he learned in hostage negotiations with a great variety of stories from his career. It's an educational read that feels more like a true-crime novel.
There are so many lessons to be learned in this book. Lessons about daily interactions & how to ensure the best outcome for everyone becomes a reality.
You'll learn how to help people while spreading empathy.

If this book teaches you nothing else, it's how to navigate conflict with empathy.

Hope is not a strategy.

"No" and "That's Right" are better to hear than "Yes". Those 2 are more powerful and longer lasting.

This was outside of my norm in some ways but really good. The author had great experience and knowledge in the field of negotiating. He told interesting stories to apply the learning. There were bullet points at the end of each chapter for review. The end had workbook pages to help in any sort of negotiation. Interesting, enjoyable, and informative.

Another audio book down for 2019! I enjoyed this primer on negotiation tactics. While Voss was a little pompous at times, the writing was clear and the tips were well explained, with plenty of examples. I think almost everyone could benefit from the lessons in this book. The audio was good, but I may buy a hard copy for reference.

Brilliant practical guide of negations at home and in business

Not sure this book is best suited as an audiobook. Having it in print would probably be easier, in order to go over the material more in depth. A lot is also just so American I‘m not sure anyone could pull it off in Scandinavia without feeling like a fool.

Love this book!! I feel like there was so much valuable information that I would want to re-read it to really make the principles stick. I will definitely be re-reading this book soon and then I‘m sure again years from now.

I have read a few books about negotiation but to be honest none of them was useful in real life but this one is . It is obvious that the writer was a real negotiator with all the skills that is needed in real life to be a good negotiator .

I picked this up less for the business/self-help aspect than being interested in FBI negotiating stories. This book gives lots of both. Surprisingly fab.

Better than most business books. It's his experience with international hostage negotiation applied to regular life. It starts out interesting, until you realize how relevant it is. Great read.
