Hanging Mary
Hanging Mary | Susan Higginbotham

In 1864 Washington, one has to be careful with talk of secession. Better to speak only when in the company of the trustworthy, like Mrs. Surratt.A widow who runs a small boarding house, Mary Surratt isn't half as committed to the cause as her son, Johnny. Ifhe's not escorting veiled spies, he's inviting home men like John Wilkes Booth, the actor who is even more charming in person than he is on the stage. But when President Lincoln is killed, the question of what Mary knew becomes more important than anything else. Based on the true history of Mary Surratt,Hanging Mary reveals the untold story of those on the otherside of the assassin's gun.

1. Civil War
2. Tagged book is my sweet spot. A real life person about whom little is known beyond biographical information, especially someone who‘s unexpectedly a witness to history.
3. Sometimes

BookmarkTavern I‘ve got a couple Civil War books on my TBR stack! 😁 Thanks for sharing! 4y

Finished this audiobook today. This is the story of Mary Surratt, one of conspirators in the Lincoln assassination, and the first woman executed by the Federal government. It‘s told from the view points of Mrs. Surratt herself and one of her boarders, Nora Fitzpatrick. A well written and seemingly well researched book.

This forlorn sign is one of the few reminders of the Lincoln assassination trials and executions that took place at Fort McNair in the summer of 1865. There are reports that Mary‘s ghost prowls the grounds, but I‘ve never seen her. This book tells a fascinating and poignant story, and I‘m glad @Mdargusch brought it to my attention!

Mdargusch Thank you for sharing. That is a creepy photo at the bottom of the hangings. 6y
Susanita @Mdargusch It is a bit macabre, isn‘t it. 6y

I️ have always been interested in reading about the assassination of Abraham Lincoln so I️ appreciated learning about the events of his death through the eyes of Mary Surratt, a convicted co-conspirator in the murder. The book alternated between chapters told through Mary Surratt and through one of her boarders, Nora Fitzpatrick . Mary was the first woman executed by the US government and after finishing the book, I‘m not convinced of her guilt.

Susanita I work near the site of her execution. There are stories of folks seeing her ghost at various places. 6y
Tamra Fascinating! 6y
emilyhaldi Sounds cool!! Finished by the pool? 😄 6y

LeahBergen This sounds like I need it! Have you read 6y
Mdargusch Yes @leahbergen. And April 1865. But one of the most haunting books is Henry and Clara. Have you read that? I️ might reread it after reading this. It‘s about the two people in the box at Fords theater with Lincoln the night he was shot and how their lives unraveled afterwards. 6y
Mdargusch Oh wow @Susanita ! That photo of their execution is so haunting. 6y
Mdargusch It was very interesting @tamra 6y
Mdargusch @emilyhaldi there are so many people at the pool yacking to me, I‘m not getting any reading done. 6y

Anyone read this? I just scooped up this deal because I'm super interested in reading about the Lincoln assassination and all of the conspirators, but I feel like I've already read this story before, so I guess we'll see if this spins the story another way. #kindledeal
