Mixed feelings with this one. It is not a great mystery story and it has some religious content which is not my thing. However, I liked the gothic atmosphere how it was described. There were something in the story tone that I liked. Those music scenes were delighted you, could felt that love for the music. But the mystery was in some aspects absurd. Gissy (Cont.) ...an unknown woman her father left under her care after he died. Who is this woman and what is the relationship with her? She could the solicitor but no, she just took another identity to enter into the asylum🙄

The book is a beautiful edition with sprayed/designed pages and pretty end pages. The gifs inside the subscription box were practical: two mugs, a blanket and candles.

The protagonist of this great mystery, Sergeant Joe Swallow, is a complex interesting character and I look forward to reading the later titles in the series. In the midst of the worst heatwave on record, Dublin prepares for Victoria‘s Golden Jubilee; two women have been murdered and dissidents threaten the festivities. Swallow believes the two murders are linked and that the unrest is related but some superiors want his investigation stopped.

2/4 ⭐️

A really soft pick. It started with a lot of promise, but it felt too long after a while. I was skimming a lot at the end.

I like this book, but did the author have to include a “let‘s help you lose weight to be pretty” make over? I expect it in my #PaperbackCrush books but not a book from 2011 (or am I naive?

Oxford 1881, & Rhiannon (Non) Vaughan is one of the first female students allowed to attend lectures at the university, although they are not yet allowed to sit the exams. Non had an unconventional upbringing as the daughter of a ship's Captain, & she chafes under the expectations that women have to avoid showing that they are just as capable of academic study as the men, & that they are just attending in order to 'catch a husband'.

OutsmartYourShelf When an undergraduate called Sidney Parker is found dead in his bed at his lodgings, the university becomes involved with the investigation. Non's offers of help are firmly rebuffed by the Dean but she is not one to give up easily. Via her friendship with lecturer Basil Rice, Non launches her own investigation into Parker's death, but Rice is struggling with losing Teddy, the man he has been in love with for several years, as Teddy is determined 7mo
OutsmartYourShelf to now marry & have a family.

The narrative is told from both both Non's & Basil's point of view in alternating chapters. The characters are interesting in that they both have to hide their true selves in order to navigate the halls of Oxford, but whilst Non is a bit of a spitfire, Basil is rather apathetic until near the end. The mystery itself came close to stalling a couple of times but it picked up again.

OutsmartYourShelf Overall, I rather enjoyed reading it & I have the next in the series to read shortly.
3.5🌟

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It‘s beautifully written and well researched. I loved the setting, it was very visual. I particularly loved the addition of a tandem tricycle - it made me smile every time it was mentioned. Non was a fantastic character, she was a brilliant model for women‘s rights in the Victorian era. Basil was another fascinating character, he had his own secret. I was gripped from beginning to end. Recommended. #Pigeonhole

Highly-strung, very silly, very cringy. Possibly the first example of (non-explicit) slash “erotica“ written by a virgin young woman with access to a stash of “forbidden books“, but definitely not the last 😂
The politics are muddled but interesting. There is a lot of internalised classism and sexism, as should be expected in a 1884 book.

I'll read a more mature work from this author before passing judgment on her.
