#CoverStories Day 20: #Bridge - Fats‘ review:
“TL;DR: A woman was in charge of the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Before reading this book, I had no idea who Emily Warren Roebling was. Set during the 1860s, How Emily Saved the Bridge tells the story of the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. Of course, the story goes beyond that.”

I saw others refer to Amy Levy as a Jewish Jane Austen. I think this is a fair comparison of the content - sitting rooms, dances, afternoon tea, manners & propriety, etc. However, the characters in the novel aren‘t as fleshed out as in an Austen novel. The writing was sparse and simple.

The protagonist of this great mystery, Sergeant Joe Swallow, is a complex interesting character and I look forward to reading the later titles in the series. In the midst of the worst heatwave on record, Dublin prepares for Victoria‘s Golden Jubilee; two women have been murdered and dissidents threaten the festivities. Swallow believes the two murders are linked and that the unrest is related but some superiors want his investigation stopped.

A really soft pick. It started with a lot of promise, but it felt too long after a while. I was skimming a lot at the end.
I like this book, but did the author have to include a “let‘s help you lose weight to be pretty” make over? I expect it in my #PaperbackCrush books but not a book from 2011 (or am I naive?
“Red? Have you no shame, Auntie Vic? You can‘t be buried in a scarlet gown.”
