Bailedbailed

I bailed on Susan Cheever‘s biography of Louisa May Alcott. It jumped all over the place,time-wise,people-wise,idea-wise.Too much about other literary figures of the time:Emerson,Thoreau,Hawthorne,Elizabeth & Sofia Peabody, Margaret Fuller, etc. Not that they are not fascinating figures in & of themselves,& they did influence Louisa, but it felt like the author spent an inordinate amount of verbiage on people & world events. It just felt scrambled.

dabbe #hailthebail! 🤩🤩🤩 4mo
Hooked_on_books When that happens, I always wonder if the author just couldn‘t find enough that they wanted to include and thus put that in as filler or if they thought that amount of detailed context is necessary. It tends to drive me crazy when authors do that. 4mo

I went to a vintage store today and saw some books I resisted buying! But the photos warm my heart also!
Bobbsey Twins, Hardy Boys & Cherry Ames Student Nurse are the older ones that are hard to see.

I was very happy to read a book that has been prominently displayed on a bookshelf in our living room for nearly 25 years! Sadly, it did not touch my heart as much as I had hoped. One of my favorite characters was this trained poodle, Sancho. He and Ben,a runaway from a circus are both lovable! Thank you as always @TheBookHippie for this delightful read along. #childrensclassicread2023

It was a good read , I can‘t say it‘s the best. I like Alcott‘s other works. It started off very nicely , but in the mid way I felt it dragged a bit. And I dint like the animal abuse part in children book, it‘s hard to read. But overall it‘s a good story I switched to audio and enjoyed it. I like happy endings 🥰 #childrenclassicread2023

MemoirsForMe Yay for happy endings! 🙌🏻 1y

Call me a sap for neatly spun happy endings, but I‘m marking this a pick. Ben and Sancho were thoroughly entertaining as well as the more spectacular(vs. darker)elements of the circus. Loved Bab showing up the boys with her archery skills and Betty stepping out of her shell to rescue Sancho. It definitely had some cringy moments, but that‘s a given for a 150-year-old classic. Alcott still rules in my book!

Bailedbailed

I'm not sure what's up with me these past few weeks; I'm super grumpy & now find myself annoyed with a children's book 😆 I'm blaming it on this awful heatwave. I enjoyed the scenes involving the excellent dog Sancho, but not much else, & I find myself dreading reading even a chapter each night. I think that defeats the purpose of kid's lit so I'm chalking it up to a case of the grumps & bailing. #ChildrensClassicRead2023 @TheBookHippie

SayersLover Under the Lilacs was always my least favorite of Alcott‘s books. Hopefully you‘ll find a better book to pull you through the slump. @batsy 2y
Tamra Wishing you a 5 star read next! ⭐️ 2y
TheBookHippie Beeeen there!!! This isn‘t her best work TBH. 2y

batsy @SayersLover @Tamra Thank you, my other current read is proving to be good 😁 2y
batsy @TheBookHippie Yes! I'm sure it's a sweet story but it's too episodic to hold my attention at the moment. 2y
dabbe Where's your heatwave? Mine's in Phoenix. My husband just told me we're having a cold spell; it's supposed to hit 99 and not 100. 🙄 #ughmehgrrbleh 🥵 Glad your new book is better! 😍 2y
batsy @dabbe In Malaysia 🙂 It's generally hot and humid all year round, but whew this year we're being pummelled by heat (and still nowhere as bad as what some of our neighbours are experiencing). And the El Nino is yet to arrive... Here's to us staying cool 🧊🧊🧊 1y
CarolynM Hope your next book makes you happy in spite of the heat😘 1y
batsy @CarolynM Thanks, Carolyn ❤️ 1y
dabbe @batsy Shoot; I knew that ... I just forgot! I had no idea how hot and humid it can be there. Here it's supposedly a dry heat, but during the monsoon it can be over 100 F (38 C?) + the humidity. And El Nino is supposed to be a big one this year. Hang in there! 🩵🤍🩵 1y
batsy @dabbe No worries, and thank you! Hope you get cooler weather too 💙 1y
Bookwomble @batsy @dabbe I was practically prostrated with heat exhaustion last week when the temperature in Lancashire hit a sweltering 21°C (61.8F)🌡️🥵 I'd be a puddle in the temperatures you're both enduring! 1y
dabbe @Bookwomble Thank technology for air conditioners. 🥵 to 😍! (edited) 1y
batsy @Bookwomble It is really tough. There is a range of temps beyond which the humidity becomes exhausting. I'm sure it's worse still for people who are used to more temperate climates to suddenly experience a heatwave ... Lots of these extremes cropping up now 😥 1y
Bookwomble @batsy It's all relative, of course, but unjust that the Global North is responsible for the majority of carbon emissions responsible for climate change, while the Global South is feeling most of the effects. I do hope that you get some relief from the heat soon 🩵 1y
batsy @Bookwomble Thank you! There's thankfully been some bouts of rain 🌧️💙 1y
MemoirsForMe Oh my! Hope cooler weather is headed your way soon. Keep those fans going and the ice cream stocked! 🍦 1y

Soscha
Under the Lilacs | Louisa May Alcott

I‘m finally getting to this one, on audio.

I‘m getting sads though, the casual mention to animal death & abuse. 😢

rubyslippersreads I‘m sure I must have read this as a child, but based on your review, I think I‘ll skip it this time. I just can‘t handle animal abuse. 2y
Soscha It‘s not over-the-top but casual mentions to throw things at loose dogs, feeding a mouse‘s nest of babies to a cat, as a jolly “revenge” thing. (edited) 2y
Soscha This was the way our country used to work though. 2y
DivineDiana I too found those parts of the story upsetting. ☹️ 1y
