1. Murakami Haruki. For setting dreamscapes and allowing me to escape reality.
And most importantly, for enabling me to write again and making me want to.

2. No.

3. This play... I was introduced to theatre because of it. That changed my life.

I love this! Thank you @ozma.of.oz

Wanna play @hannah-leeloo @MySharonaK @BeeMagical ?

BookmarkTavern Peter Pan is an excellent doorway to the joys of theater! Thank you for sharing! 3y
Yuki_Onna @ozma.of.oz Peter Pan, dear? 🤔 While I certainly agree with you, 😉
it was Andorra by Max Frisch my mother went to watch with me at theatre.
It was required reading at school at 10 grade and she knew I enjoyed it.
So she got us tickets. I fell in love with one of the actors. I got to know him.
That was the start of everything...
3y
BookmarkTavern Whoops! I think I commented too fast! Someone else tagged Peter Pan, and I was still thinking about it. So sorry! 🤦🏼‍♀️ I‘ll have to look up Andorra. I don‘t think I‘ve heard of it before. (edited) 3y

Yuki_Onna @ozma.of.oz No need to be sorry at all! 😚 I was just a bit puzzled... 😂
Max Frisch was (along with Friedrich Duerrenmatt) the most famous modern author of Switzerland. His novels and plays are frequently required reading in Germany. Andorra is one of his most influential plays - about someone who is made a scapegoat and the society that kills him with their prejudices. It's often thought to be set in Nazi Germany. It made a huge impact on me...
3y
Yuki_Onna @ozma.of.oz Btw, I really enjoy these kinds of conversations that ensue from ... mistakes or misunderstandings, if you will... 🤗
Of course, plays by mid-20th century mid-European authors are quite obscure outside of Europe... 😛 So I don't expect anyone apart from the bourgeoisie of the German speaking countries to have heard of it... 😁
(edited) 3y
BookmarkTavern That sounds like a really intense read. Finding some works that I wouldn‘t normally be exposed to or pick up on my own is entirely why I do these questions! 😁 And yeah, misunderstandings can make for some really interesting discussions. 3y
BeeMagical I saw this too late!🤦🏼‍♀️💀 3y
Yuki_Onna @BeeMagical No worries! 😁 That happens to me frequently... 😁 Maybe you'll play this one next week? 😊 3y
Yuki_Onna @ozma.of.oz Ha! Then I'll try to do my job and tell you about obscure European authors/books even more in the future! 😝
-Well, as a German, we are used having to deal with the Nazi era, Hitler, WWII etc. in films, books, documentaries and conversations on a daily basis.
Andorra is intense in topic, sure, but I really like the writing style of Max Frisch (He's one of my fave writers) and I enjoyed the discussion in class.

Pickpick

This was a mix of history and tourist information guide. There was also some fiction thrown in, much of which I didn‘t like and a load of limericks, which were superfluous.

However, the rest of the book was a fascinating read, particularly the accounts of all of the festivals, one of which involves the gifting of books! This little anthology has made me want to visit Andorra so, all in all, a success!

Susanita Oh dear. Limericks are best enjoyed in small doses. 4y
squirrelbrain They are fab aren‘t they?! @MoonWitch94 @aperfectmjk 4y
squirrelbrain Yes and these were particularly rubbish! @Susanita 🤣 4y
aperfectmjk @squirrelbrain I'll admit it took me a solid 30 mins to figure out out to inflate it, but I got it now. I had to watch a couple YouTube videos. 😂 4y
Hooked_on_books Your giant inflatable purple thing is cracking me up! I feel like you should be floating down a river or something. 😆 I bet it‘s comfy, though. 4y
Librarybelle I may have to look into this book! 4y
TrishB That looks great 👍🏻 4y
squirrelbrain @aperfectmjk 🤣🤣🤣 It‘s definitely easier with a slight breeze! 4y
squirrelbrain @Hooked_on_books - apparently you can use them on water - I‘ve never tried it though! 4y
squirrelbrain @Librarybelle - I bought mine on Kindle - it was Qc.49 in the UK, so not outrageous.... 4y
julesG Oh, looks very comfortable. Did you have to run around to inflate it? I got your postcard, BTW. Thank you! I'll email when I can catch my breath for a bit. 4y
squirrelbrain Well, @julesG, *I* didn‘t run around to inflate it... I left that to someone else! 🤣 I can‘t believe how good the post is at the moment.... 4y
julesG It was sent off in Germany. Post stamp says 18th. That's pretty quick then. 4y
squirrelbrain Oh that‘s quite clever then @julesG - it‘s the first time I‘ve tried e-postcards - very covid-friendly! 4y

This was a good read, a steamy romance novel with a good story, although Annalia was slightly annoying in the first half of the book.
Was really struggling for Andorra so glad I found this one 🙂

14 I already own, 24 from the library, 1 from #mummysquirrel and 12 to buy. 30 fiction and 21 NF.

Would anyone by interested in sharing books by post? For example, the tagged book is one I need to buy but happy to send it around after I‘ve read it. (I‘ll let you decide if you use it for all seven countries!😁) Happy to send outside of the UK too.

#backpackeurope travelogue *fictional*
Country 51: Andorra! Tiny country, but one of the longest life expectancies. Spa time in Caldea, hiked Madriu-Perafita-Claror (UNESCO, 10% of Andorra land!)
If you want a thriller that doesn't read like one til the last page, set in Andorra but written so placelessly it could be a Wikipedia page summary, with a self-important jacket description, this is the book for you. Could have been set anywhere. 1.5/5.

bookandcat "Andorra is a dazzling leap of the imagination by one of our sliest prose stylists" says the jacket flap, according to text that was probably written by the author. Quick, let me roll my eyes. ?? 6y
mcipher Great review - sound like a book no one wants to read! 😆 6y
bookandcat @mcipher lol I feel kind of badly for ripping it because it started out okay and I thought it could potentially get really good as it went along but nothing happened. by the end i was just SO confused by the way it was written and between that and the jacket flap the writer just seemed pretentious 6y

The Road to Andorra | Shirley Deane

Managed to find a copy in the library and decided to give it ago - the library that is. I'm normally useless for reading them in a timely manner so I don't bother ☺
The book is a fun, well written account of Deane's time in Andorra and Ibiza in the 1950's. She creates a vivid image of everything and everyone she writes about, so you get a real sense of it all. The story itself wasn't exactly mesmerising, but she tells iy well and I enjoyed it 😊
