A Summer Affair: A Novel | Elin Hilderbrand
post image
Mehso-so

When I go to take a book picture, the cats have to join me 😹
I finished my third Elin Hilderbrand book this morning and I didn‘t love this one. The characters were rather annoying and the premise felt a little too over the top for me. At least now I have finished her Nantucket series though! 3/5 ⭐️

Pickpick

A mystery, romance, and love story to Nantucket all rolled into one. This is not a typical choice for me, but it was a good mystery with an ending that I didn‘t like but made perfect sense in the context of the story. Overall a good, quick, easy read. 👍🏻. #24B4Monday. #teamslaughter

KatieDid927 Hi Judy! I‘m revealing myself as your All Hallows‘ Read swap match becaaaause I just shipped your package and realized I accidentally shipped it to 277 instead of 227. I‘m so so sorry!! I just wanted to give you a heads up in case this caused a delay or maybe let your post office know. Again I‘m so so sorry, I should‘ve triple checked that I had it right. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2mo
Judybskt @KatieDid927 can you email me the tracking info so I have something to give my post office please. My email is judybskt@gmail.com And no worries. These things happen. I actually don‘t think there is a 277 on my street. So that should help! 🤪 (edited) 2mo

Mehso-so

Torn between a pick and so-so. Engaging enough but reading about the woes of attractive and privileged white folk got tiresome after a while. Good beach reading but not quite meaty enough for fall.

marleed I hold this book as an example of storytelling that bugs me. Summer of 69 had so many American historical moments that deserve to be considered at their 50 year anniversaries. Retrofitting all that history into the experiences of a single family bugged me in a way that‘s really kind of silly - and perhaps I should get over! 2mo

This might be the best dedication I've ever seen.

charl08 I read one recently (to an academic paper) which thanked the authors' childcare providers as it wouldnt have been possible without them. 👏 2mo

Pickpick

I closed out the summer with a beach reach. It contained some annoying tropes and a few cringey lines like “And maybe, just maybe, this summer will end up being one that people write songs about”, but overall it was well written and light even though it touched on serious subject matter (Vietnam, racism). It felt like she was trying too hard to make it historical but as an engaging story about family in that period of time, it worked for me.

BarbaraBB Great review. And a beautiful place to end the summer... (I am so not ready for fall yet 😬) 2mo
Rachel_nyc @BarbaraBB Thanks! We‘ve had a very warm September and it is going to be 88F one day next week so I am now finally ready for fall. Bring on the sweaters and hot chocolate! 2mo

Although it wasn't my favorite, I've always liked this author for summer reads. I love a good story that takes place on any New England island. The story has connections to Emporia and Kansas City, KS through the young professor Courtney. It kept my interest because I'm from Kansas🌻
