Summer of '69
Summer of '69 | Elin Hilderbrand
110 posts | 83 read | 1 reading | 46 to read
Follow New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand back in time and join a Nantucket family as they experience the drama, intrigue, and upheaval of a 1960s summer. Welcome to the most tumultuous summer of the twentieth century! It's 1969, and for the Levin family, the times they are a-changing. Every year the children have looked forward to spending the summer at their grandmother's historic home in downtown Nantucket: but this year Blair, the oldest sister, is marooned in Boston, pregnant with twins and unable to travel. Middle sister Kirby, a nursing student, is caught up in the thrilling vortex of civil rights protests, a passion which takes her to Martha's Vineyard with her best friend, Mary Jo Kopechne. Only son Tiger is an infantry soldier, recently deployed to Vietnam. Thirteen-year-old Jessie suddenly feels like an only child, marooned in the house with her out-of-touch grandmother who is hiding some secrets of her own. As the summer heats up, Teddy Kennedy sinks a car in Chappaquiddick, man flies to the moon, and Jessie experiences some sinking and flying herself, as she grows into her own body and mind. In her first "historic novel," rich with the details of an era that shaped both a country and an island thirty miles out to sea, Elin Hilderbrand once again proves her title as queen of the summer novel.

Mehso-so

Torn between a pick and so-so. Engaging enough but reading about the woes of attractive and privileged white folk got tiresome after a while. Good beach reading but not quite meaty enough for fall.

marleed I hold this book as an example of storytelling that bugs me. Summer of 69 had so many American historical moments that deserve to be considered at their 50 year anniversaries. Retrofitting all that history into the experiences of a single family bugged me in a way that‘s really kind of silly - and perhaps I should get over! 1mo

I closed out the summer with a beach reach. It contained some annoying tropes and a few cringey lines like “And maybe, just maybe, this summer will end up being one that people write songs about”, but overall it was well written and light even though it touched on serious subject matter (Vietnam, racism). It felt like she was trying too hard to make it historical but as an engaging story about family in that period of time, it worked for me.

BarbaraBB Great review. And a beautiful place to end the summer... (I am so not ready for fall yet 😬) 2mo

I could not get into this book at all. Not even 75 pages in. I just don‘t care. I typically enjoy all her books. Not today. And not in 69.

marleed I liked it okay but I think as historical fiction this was a fail. I think she needed to focus on one family being significantly impacted by one maybe two events of that historical summer. But retrofitting one fam into every event made the story hokey. 2mo

I think this is my first time being sick that actually involved non stop sneezing 🤔

Thinking about numbering my posts for my #30daychallenge to help me keep track… and maybe more accountable. But feeling..okay. Bleh but bleh is better than dumpster diving sad so small wins are wins.

Very light reading. Novel about the women in a family during the summer of ‘69. Historical events are woven into the story but not really the focus. If you are looking for a light read, this is a good choice. If not, pass.

Just finished my first Elin Hilderbrand book. It was the perfect beach read for my beach vacation. I loved the characters and their family dynamics, the time period is also a favorite. My favorite aspect of the book was the use of song titles instead of chapter numbers. A kind of soundtrack as you read the story.

The atmosphere of this book is terrific. Although the blurb does not describe it as such, to me it felt as a coming of age tale story for Jessie, Kirby, and Blair (even though she‘s married already), as the world is changing around them in unimaginable ways.

Loved this story! The story is about a family that goes to Nantucket for summers. The tale goes back & forth between the drama of parents and their 3 daughters. The mother is struggling with the fact that her son is in Vietnam. One daughter is pregnant. One daughter is working on Martha's Vineyard. The youngest is coming of age. Highly recommend.

So I wanted to read this book because some reader said Woodstock was involved. I‘m thinking it was mentioned three times. Did like the story of a family who‘s son goes to Vietnam and how their summer progresses and all of their lives have changed. The Vietnam storyline also drew me in so I ended liking this book for that aspect. Then read that the author used her and her twin brother to use as a setting of when they were born!👍🏼😀👏

I liked this better than so-so, so I rounded up, but it was definitely not love. I generally like this author, but I felt really disconnected with this one. I was really excited about the premise, but I feel like too much was crammed in and it lacked the hearty substance I so craved. Do I regret reading it? Nah. Would I ever read it again? Also nah.

Today‘s Prompt

Lemonade: pick a book that started off bitter but got better.

For me that was the tagged book. I really did not like the first half. I considered dnfing it several times. Halfway through it picked up and I enjoyed it. The ending even made me tear up.

#summerreaderstag

KathyWheeler I read a book of hers that I hated and, even though she‘d been a summer read go-to author for me for years, I‘ve had trouble trusting her ever since. 4mo
megzlynn This was my first by her. While I enjoyed the ending it still was not a favorite read. I‘m not sure I‘ll pick up another book by her. It‘s just not my usual taste. 4mo
marleed The more I think about this book the less I like it. @Bakingbookworm and I discussed and she used the term ‘shoehorned‘ to describe pushing all those historical events of 1969 into one family. I agree and think it‘s a flipped way to use historical fiction as a genre and I‘m not really a fan of that. 4mo
Bakingbookworm @marleed Elin Hilderbrand tends to be a hit or miss for me. Unfortunately, with all the ‘shoehorning‘ of events, this was just an ok read for me. I expected a lot more. 4mo
megzlynn @marleed @Bakingbookworm I love both of your comments. Such great points. I expect a lot more as well. When I read the synopsis I thought it would be a favorite of the year and I was truly disappointed. 4mo
