Winter Garden | Beryl Bainbridge

Pickpick

A farcical story about a middle age man Douglas who tells his wife he is going to Scotland fishing but sets of on an artistic groups visit to Moscow with his lover the flamboyant actress Nina, who then appears to be permanently avoiding him. His journey around 1980s Russia with the other members and the authoritive olga makes for a strange tale of misadventures. Enjoyable, strange ending, as ever Bainbridge is a great storyteller but not my fave

Pickpick

Not your typical Pym- his one is darker and more cutting but still marked by her keen eye and wit. I honestly didn‘t like it at first, the main character is vain and manipulative and the love triangle she gets involved in wasn‘t especially interesting at first. Then the triangle becomes a square and as the players switch around and the winners become losers, it all became both comedic and tragic. Unexpected but still so good. #24in2024

LeslieO I ❤️Pym but I don‘t think I‘ve read this one. 6d

TorieStorieS I was never a Dana Larson fan, but poor Arthur Castillo deserves Princess Elizabeth! (edited) 1w
JenlovesJT47 @TorieStorieS I know! Dana is SO annoying in this one. I haven‘t read the SVT book about Arthur in 20+ years but my man Arthur definitely deserves better than Dana! 😆 1w

Shuttlecock | Graham Swift

Pickpick

This is a compelling read - I found it hard to put down - interesting and unique story - a rather unpleasant husband and father whose outlook on life changes greatly after being rescued from the shadow of his fathers success ! Graham Swift has been around for a while - I don‘t know how I missed him but at least I have the joy of much reading ahead of me from this very clever writer .

The Native Heath | Elizabeth Fair

This is one of my favorite kinds of books - where we are dropped smack-dab into the middle of village life as though we‘ve always lived there. Nothing of much real importance happens, so every little daily detail takes on importance. Julia Dunstan reminds me a bit of Jane Austen‘s Emma - believing she knows best, she tries to fix and improve everyone around her. A delightful, light, entertaining read.

Ruthiella Oh yes! She is rather like Emma. Well meaning meddling but without a firm grasp on reality. 2mo

Mehso-so

I read this in July, and while I enjoyed it while I was reading it, I must admit that now I can‘t remember a thing about it, except the townspeoples‘ fear of becoming a New Town. Delightful, in the ephemeral way these books sometimes are.

Tamra I haven‘t gotten to it yet! 😬 2mo
Ruthiella Oh well. This one was right up my alley. 😃 I don‘t remember everyone‘s names but I definitely remember the plot points. (edited) 2mo

My first Elizabeth Fair, but not my last!
1950s village England with gossipy busybodies, rivalries, romantic crushes, mixed in with urgent worries (based strictly on rumor!) of being overrun & turned into a smoggy New Town. Likable oddballs abound. My favorite: seeing their internal monologues directly contradict their outward words/actions. Enjoyable read with satisfying endings.
And the cover is 💯😉
Read with the #FurrowedMiddlebrowClub

Ruthiella I loved the breadth of characters here - somewhat eccentric but all believable. This will also not be my last Elizabeth Fair book ! 2mo
Jess_Read_This You captured the book perfectly in your review! I enjoyed it too. 2mo
