Wild Houses: A Novel | Colin Barrett

Pickpick

A drugs-related kidnapping of a young lad: not a book I'd have picked up, were it not for its #bookerprize longlisting.
I enjoyed the characterisation (poor Dev, especially, and hapless Doll, and prematurely adult Nicky). There's something feels not quite complete about it though, and it could do with one more edit: not least to clear up the nonsensical imagery I kept tripping over (eg. the appearance of a distant building compared to an aspirin).

Ostensibly about a drug-deal related shakedown, this is actually an exploration of the lives of people living at the margins and at risk. It‘s described as “darkly funny” and I don‘t agree at all—I found it to be an encouragement to look more deeply at quiet desperation. #TOBlonglist

BarbaraBB You‘re right, it wasn‘t that funny. I liked it a lot 1w
Gleefulreader I thought this book was really good too. But I never understand why publishers insist on trying to make books sound lighter or funnier than they truly are. It just sets the author up for a potentially bad review through impossible expectations. 1w

Hooked_on_books @Gleefulreader You‘re exactly right. And will a disappointed reader come back for the next book? Probably not. 1w

Book 6 for #TenBeforeTheEnd and another one I‘ve had on my shelf for at least a decade. It was interesting and a creative merging of two timelines and some magical realism, but I didn‘t love it. I realized this is by the author of a new book, which I do still want to read - The Most.

ChaoticMissAdventures ✅ great job! 4w

My 12th from the #Booker #longlist. One more to go.

A sensitive thriller? A low-level violent drug-deal abduction, that becomes very interested in the sensitive nature of its characters. The pacing is careful but controlled. When we want it to move on, it holds its course. Be patient dear reader. I enjoyed it.

Suet624 I liked this one too. Great review. 😊 4w

Leniverse I've waited so long for this to be available from the library, I was starting to lose interest. But I guess I'll keep my hold after all. 4w
Graywacke @Leniverse you won‘t regret meeting Dev, Doll and Nicky 4w

Solid pick. Rural Ireland crime drama with believable flawed characters; great writing.

#ToBwaiting These are a few titles being talked about for possible inclusion for next March‘s Tournament of Books. We should see the Long List in a couple of weeks.

I do hope Poor Deer is selected- I am enjoying the audiobook. Wild Houses was offered as an Audible freebie (or discount - can‘t recall) so I have it up for a listen soon.

squirrelbrain I‘ve read 3 of these, heard of 2 of them as rumours for the ToB, but Short War is completely new to me. Great choices! 2mo
BkClubCare @squirrelbrain - it‘s too much fun! 🤩 2mo
BarbaraBB Great choices and very plausible indeed for TOB 2mo

Ruthiella Wow! I have only heard of the David Nichols book! It would be nice to see Claire Oshetsky at least in the longlist due to her long participation in the comments section. 2mo
Chelsea.Poole I keep meaning to get around to Wild Houses. Maybe if it makes the list I‘ll finally read it. 2mo
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - honest, so weird! That I feel like I know her?! I don‘t, but it does color my respect and awe for her books. Am I the weirdo? 2mo
Bookwormjillk Great list! 2mo
Megabooks The only one of these I know is Rejection. Off to look them up!! 2mo

The brother of a drug dealer is kidnapped. That character and the sweet and anxious man who must open his home to the kidnappers, and the girlfriend of the kidnapped man are all characters you root for. While I enjoyed the novel I can‘t say I was fully invested in it even though the Irish small town setting, the characters and the intrigue normally would have kept me focused. I enjoyed the writing though. #bookerlonglist24

#Booker 9/13

Not sure how or why this book ended up on the Booker longlist but I did enjoy it. It‘s a fast paced story about a drugsdeal gone wrong and the consequences for a bunch of interesting characters. I especially loved Dev and Nicky and I loved the ending, especially what it meant to Nicky!

rmaclean4 I started this but had to return it to the library half read . I was enjoying the novel. If it makes the longlist, I will finish. 4mo
Graywacke Love your picture, again. 🙂 I‘m looking forward to a fast paced novel. 4mo
squirrelbrain Yes, it didn‘t feel *quite* Booker-y enough to me, but I really liked it! 4mo

Cathythoughts I really enjoyed it too. But I wasn‘t happy with the ending … a kind of meh ending 😁🤷🏼‍♀️ 4mo
BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts I liked how Nicky didn‘t commit herself to a future with Doll! 4mo
Cathythoughts Yes , I agree. But I thought it kind of petered out then. 4mo
BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts That‘s true, no surprises there. 4mo
BarbaraBB @Graywacke Thanks! Yes, a welcome surprise on the longlist! 4mo

This was a solid pick for me but not sure how it made it onto the longlist. At least it wasn‘t dry and repetitive which seems to be a theme of this year‘s longlist.
