I read an interesting article with Art Spiegelman addressing the Tennessee school board decision. He had a few good points: 1. People want a “warm & fuzzy” Holocaust version of events. 2. The school board wants to promote a version where the Americans were the heroes and use that message as their focus on WWII 3. This was never about nudity (it‘s a mouse) or profanity but the resistance of facing the dark and evil side of humanity. #Defiance
CarolynM I read something today that said that suggested that some school boards don't want any books about the holocaust in school libraries unless there are also books that present "the other side".???? I despair. 2y

Librariana @Cinfhen - Cindy, a colleague of mine shared a great article from Mother Jones (https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2022/02/the-inside-story-of-the-banning-of-maus-its-dumber-than-you-think/), but the more I read it, the more it upset me. Like Mr. Spiegelman said, it's almost as if the board members were asking why a 'nicer' version of the Holocaust couldn't be taught. The entire thing is beyond ridiculous. 2y

sarahbarnes Agreed. I taught Maus to 8th graders and my 13yo daughter has my copies and has read them more than once. It‘s very similar to the backlash here right now against teaching “critical race theory” in schools. White people want a nicer version of their racism taught here too. 2y

eanderson I‘m concerned that history will repeat itself because we are so concerned with offending people with the truth. It sickens me. The Holocaust shouldn‘t be warm and fuzzy. It‘s uncomfortable, upsetting, and completely heartbreaking. It wasn‘t the first time that Jews were persecuted and it certainly won‘t be the last time that something that disgusting will happens to a group of people. My dad started teaching us about the Holocaust at an early age (edited) 2y

Unfortunately history does repeat and there are numerous cases of genocide occurring today. Elie Wiesel‘s son just called out China on the ethnic cleansing of the Uighur community. 😔 2y
