Town with No Mirrors | Christina Collins

Pickpick

#BookReport #MiddleGradeMarch #dontjudgeabookbyitscover All of my books this week were 4 and 4.5 Stars. It was difficult to choose a favorite. I decided on The Town With No Mirrors; a middle grade dystopian about of the importance of body image. It was quite unique.

I literally bought this book because I liked the cover.
#DONTJUDGEABOOKBYITSCOVER

The cover is definitely better than the book. Also, the synopsis has essentially NOTHING to do with the story? Halfway through and still waiting for anything remotely mysterious or thrilling. Only one mystery has been solved so far -
This is going to another unfortunate soul via Little Free Library once I'm done.

I didn‘t like this short story, nominated for the #InternationalBookerPrize2022, at all. Each story started out interesting but all soon became too absurd to my taste.

rockpools It went SO weird! 2y
BarbaraBB @rockpools Did you like it? 2y
rockpools @BarbaraBB I liked the sense of place. The ‘plots‘ were too slippery for me. And (in life in general) I could do without the gross bits. 2y

Centique Gorgeous photo though! You make me long to visit Europe again 😍 2y
BarbaraBB @Centique Thanks! Does the picture look European? Funny! 2y
Centique @BarbaraBB oh I just have seen so many lovely photos on your timeline that I am thinking about Europe to start with I guess! 2y
Simona I‘m not eager to read this one … 2y
BarbaraBB @Centique Thank you 🙏 2y
BarbaraBB @Simona I didn‘t see the point but there probably is much more than I give it credit for! 2y

I guess I have an eclectic taste in book covers. I‘m drawn to covers like these, but they‘re all different. 🤷‍♀️ A cover will certainly draw me in, but it‘s not the deciding factor for me when choosing a book. I‘ve read books I did not like at all with great covers, and books I‘ve loved with terrible covers. #dontjudgeabookbyitscover #sundaysoapbox @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

12 Men for Christmas | Phillipa Ashley

Bailedbailed

My 2nd Bail of 2022.

In effort to clean off my nightstand and because I've read some less than stellar Holiday Reads, I popped over to Goodreads. Several Reviewers complained about not meeting the 12 of the Calendar and that it's not a Christmas Story but set during Spring/Summer. The only Christmas is just barely mentioned in Epilogue.

I want my Christmas Stories to have Christmas. Shame. It has such a beautiful cover. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Crinoline_Laphroaig I did read the Epilogue. Way to syrupy sweet. 🤢 Oh and apparently the heroine of the book has long dark hair but we put a blond on the cover. #dontjudgeabookbyitscover 2y

Piranesi | Susanna Clarke

Well, I was certainly sold the dummy here. Quite definitely the worst book I have read so far this year ... perhaps even a contender for worst of this century. Even the beautiful presentation (the cover beneath the dust jacket, and the endpapers, are exquisite) could not redeem it.

mackelie I‘m really sorry you didn‘t enjoy this book! On the contrary, I loved it and think it‘s a brilliant read. But I do agree that it may not be for everyone :) 3y
Moonprismpower I enjoyed this book. However starting out, the story was very confusing and I had to read and reread quite slowly before it turned into a good book for me. I feel like it leaned quite close to literary fiction and usually literary is a hard pass for me. I hope you find a better next read! 3y
Palimpsest I can‘t access your Goodreads review, but I was only going to read your review to see what you found so unlikeable because this book in my opinion is brilliant. I may have interpreted it differently than the author‘s intention, but for me it was about creation, almost an ethnography; of being alone and trying to make sense of a world with very few clues, but continuing to live because that‘s what we are built to do. Book reminds me of Borges too. (edited) 3y

Palimpsest I‘ve also read quite a bit about the real Piranesi and his imagined prisons, so my English lit trained brain was making all sorts of connections in theory which is how I look at literature. Just had to defend it because I think it‘s the best new fiction book I read last year. Not that anyone cares about my opinion, but to say that even the boards don‘t do it justice is harsh. 😕Then again I don‘t like what most people read. 3y
Bookwomble @Palimpsest I loved it, also, and I got a Borges feel from it as well. The Narnia connection was delightful, too, but mostly the power and grace of Clarke's language and images. Then again, I don't like what most people read 😃 3y
Palimpsest @Bookwomble I agree with the Narnia feel. I also got a bit of Samuel Beckett. Please note I don‘t mean to sound flippant when I said like you that I don‘t like what most people read, but I don‘t automatically buy what publishers push (although this book deserved the publicity) and I enjoy a lot of classical works, classic novels, non-fiction, some fantasy and a little avant-garde. I like well written, thought provoking stories and this fits. 😄 3y
Bookwomble @Palimpsest I didn't think you sounded flippant 🙂 3y

Sometimes it‘s impossible not to judge a book by its cover! I love artistic covers and I‘m especially happy when the story inside lives up to the enticing cover! Let me share 5 of my favorites with you: https://youtu.be/XpPDkqCbP5A

EadieB @Butterflyamore I don‘t look at book covers much as I do read lots of thrillers. I basically look at author names but i have read the Diane Sutterfield and Neil Gaiman book and enjoyed them. (edited) 4y
