Dune all over the place!

Re-read before going to see Dune 2. Split reading the physical copy and listening to the audio to be sure I was done before the movie. Soo much better than the first read, I was able to catch ua lot more detail and the audio helped with some of the more challenging pronunciation.

The movie was great, but as always the book was better. And EVEN better the 2nd time around.
I‘m hooked all over again!

I have some weird nostalgia for this movie/Cartoon? from my childhood, though I can‘t quite place it (not sure I ever even saw it)
I‘m a newbie to sci-fi and was blown away by the world building ... the ecological, religious, political backstory went so deep and the plots on plots on plots really intrigued me.

Looking forward to the movie coming out this year (and can‘t help myself from needing to see the 1984 movie too).

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Mmmm, 1984 Sting in hardcore man bikini... 🤤😅🤣😂🤣 I have yet to read the books, but they‘ve been sitting on my TBR for a long while. Should probably attempt to get to them before the new film. 😬 I love your retro copy! 😍 4y
Bookish.SAM Wow @bookwyrm42 you‘re really selling the old movie! I can‘t WAIT! 🤣 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Bookish.SAM 😂🤣😂 He‘s pretty delicious to look at, not gonna lie. 4y

CrowCAH I agree, not just for dudes! I‘m listening to the third and very much enjoying the story. Can‘t wait for the movie in December! 4y
Bookish.SAM @CrowCAH I figured I‘d like it, but I didn‘t expect to get so into it or that I‘d be so interested in the rest of the series, but I‘m looking forward to them! 4y
NeonKnight Just finished this one recently myself. An excellent read! 4y
Bookish.SAM @NeonKnight do you think you‘ll carry on with the series? (edited) 4y
NeonKnight @Bookish.SAM definitely! I‘ve heard some of the later books are slower paced and I always take a break between series to read something else, but I‘m still interested to see where it goes. 4y

I‘m finally ready to dive in to the #DuneBuddyRead - just a week or so late. Having just finished an epic fantasy trilogy from N.K. Jemisin, I hope another one will grab me. I‘m feeling a bit unsure, though. But I‘ll give it a go! #dunereadalong #dunesnotjustfordudes

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Well @gezemice loved it and read the whole thing already! So 🤞 6y
Gezemice Yep, I could not put it down. Although I am not sure I would want to read it on a heel of another epic series - it really is more fantasy then sci-fi. The setting is sci-fi but I kept thinking the whole time it was fantasy in its themes - mysticism, witches, dukes, a chosen one, bloodlines... @Riveted_Reader_Melissa (edited) 6y

TieDyeDude This book got me out of a long reading slump years ago. I'm interested to see what you think. 6y
GarthRanzz I was afraid I wasn‘t going to like it as much as I did in high school. Surprisingly it hooked me in again. It‘s the one buddy read I‘m the furthest along in right now. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gezemice Even just a few pages in, it seems to have plenty of fantasy elements. And all these new words to learn! 😱 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @GoodForCirculation That‘s a good endorsement. I‘m sure I‘ll keep posting here! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @GarthRanzz Isn‘t it cool when a book stands he test of time? 6y
GarthRanzz It is. Especially when so many don‘t. 6y
Gezemice @BarbaraTheBibliophage The beginning is very dense. He dumps a lot of info without much happening in the first 20%. It picks up after that. 6y

That one time I decided to slowly work my way through War and Peace. #yearofthechunkster.

🙄🙄🙄

#IveHadBetterIdeas

TheBookStacker I‘m going to be starting Dune soon, and I plan to tentatively tackle Moby Dick but I‘m scared. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto @TheBookStacker I'm also supposed to be starting Dune but I haven't decided if I actually will. Most Dick is quiteee the chunkster. 6y
ofbooksandme I am a XIXth century literature fan so chunksters are kind of a thing for me lol. But from what I remember, Moby Dick is a bit more fast paced and easier to tackle. My boyfriend has been nagging me to read Dune since like for ever. 6y

RachLovesTV From what I remember of War and Peace (I read it 15 years ago), about every other chapter is about actual war and battle strategy, etc, so if you're not into that, you can kind of skim those chapters, and you won't be missing much. 6y
RachLovesTV Forgot to add, good luck! 👍🏻 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto @RachLovesTV I love this advice! Thanks! 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto @ofbooksandme There's a dune buddy read coming up! Feel free to join us if you'd like to finally tackle it. It's hosted by @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 6y
ofbooksandme @Ashley_Nicoletto That actually sounds very good. I'll keep en eye out for it. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice just finished this one! She has some tips on her page. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ofbooksandme That‘s exactly how the Dune buddy read got started, many many men in our lives recommending it...so we decided to give it a try. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thanks lady! I don't follow her so I will make sure to do so and look into this. Also, that's hilarious. 😂😂 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Ashley_Nicoletto one of the group‘s ideas for the reading tag was originally #DunesNotJustForDudes if you click on that and scroll down you can see @BarbaraTheBibliophage original Dune post (edited) 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Ashley_Nicoletto @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I must start my Dune pages ASAP! I was in class all weekend and lost mucho reading time. Thankfully it‘s a light week for clients. 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto @BarbaraTheBibliophage I didn't realize that this had started either so I'm very behind as well. 😂😂 6y
Gezemice @RachLovesTV I second this. I just finished it. I Did love the peace parts. There are chapters where Tolstoy is having an argument with historians about war. I recommend skimming the first couple paragraphs to see if something actually happens, and if not, just move on to the next chapter. I ended up skipping the entire second epilogue. 6y
Gezemice @BarbaraTheBibliophage I have started it and now I can‘t put it down. It starts a bit tediously - too much info dump at the beginning - but around 20% in stuff starts happening and it is a page-turner. 6y
RachLovesTV @Gezemice yes! Anna Karenina is kind of similar, so at this point, I think it's just Tolstoy's style, haha. At least he doesn't mix things up in each chapter. 😁 6y
Gezemice @RachLovesTV I actually loved Anna from start to end. I found it a pretty easy read, just very long so I would need to take breaks. Otherwise lovely writing. 6y
Bks4Wrms What edition of War and Peace do you have? There are so many editions and some are not as good others...🤷🏼‍♀️ I‘ve been holding off because I can‘t decide which version to go with...🤦🏼‍♀️ #ParalysisByAnalysis 6y

Jabberwocky I LOVE DUNE SO MUCH 6y
Jabberwocky Okay that was a little aggressive but it‘s in like my top 5 fave books ever and that‘s a hard list to get on. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Awesome! Have fun! 6y

Bry I read it last year, following this video book club https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHZDkFt4F9fOkc0rtX7ainnR2qvQG3K4N . The Q&A sessions kind of drag on but the first 20-30 minutes of each session had a good recap, just in case you miss something. 6y
Gezemice @Bry Cool, thanks for the link! I am guessing there are spoilers so I will need to wait until I have finished 6y
Gezemice @Jabberwocky @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I am only on page 18 but I am intrigued. The writing is really good and there is a lot of setup going on. 6y
Bry @Gezemice Each video covers about 60ish pages of the mass market (details in the video titles). 6y
Gezemice @Bry Mine is 489 pages plus Appendices 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
Anna40 Is that your bookmark? Are those your kids? I love that!!! Did you make it? 6y
Gezemice @Anna40 Yes, it is my favorite bookmark. I made it a long time ago... they are teenagers now :) We were out at an Amish garden (a touristy place), it was hot, we were all tired, and I took 11 shots to get one that was reasonable - where they both looked into the camera. I thought it was so funny. 8 of them ended up on this bookmark and I love it every time I see it 😊 6y
Anna40 Great! It's also a great gift idea! My husband's bday is coming up 😊 6y
Gezemice @Anna40 Oh yes, that would be a great gift! 6y

Starting Feb 14 we have a Dune #BuddyRead coming up. For all of us who have been told time and again by our boyfriends, brothers, spouses, and significant others that Dune is their favorite book & you should read it, in honor of them this Valentine‘s Day we are having a #DuneReadAlong, although I admit @BarbaraTheBibliophage tag is the best #DunesNotJustForDudes fingers crossed that‘s true, we‘ll find out together if you care to join us.

Moray_Reads It really is something special 6y
benchley1 I'm gonna try! It ticks a lot of boxes and my sis liked it so much she bought it for me. 6y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @benchley1 And Sisters too! Funny when we talked about it before it was a lot of male recommenders, so yay for a sister recommendation! 6y
Gezemice I am definitely in. My husband loves this book but I keep putting it off because of size and because of an unfortunate tv adaptation which was simply terrible. My husband had since tried to convince me many times that the book is better. 6y
LitLogophile Yay! Not sure if I‘ll jump on the buddy read bc idk if I can get to this in feb, but I‘m excited to see if y‘all enjoy it 😃 6y
DivineDiana Yay! Still have to get a copy! 😉 6y
benchley1 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa my sister and I are not gender obvious based on the bulk of our pop culture preferences. Lots of dad taking us to movies and whatnot. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @benchley1 I‘m a big Star Wars/Star Trek/Science Fiction fan, so I don‘t think it‘s really as gender obvious as most seem to want to think, it‘s just that when we were talking about it before there definitely seemed to be a trend in who recommended this one. And good for your dad, he sounds like a good one. 6y
Melkyl I picked up the entire series at the flea market last summer, but I haven‘t had a chance to read it yet. I might try to join you 😊 6y
benchley1 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think part if the magic of.being an 80s latchkey kid was the folks trusted us. My boyfriend is (still) amazed at the stuff my folks let us watch, and the movies my dad took us to. Hahaha. 6y
manifestsanity I've always wanted to read Dune! Might join in. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m definitely in!! Thanks for organizing this. 👏🏻👏🏻📚📚 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @benchley1 Yes, I‘m right in the same group. Single mom though who was a nurse, and worked lots of night shift. But also tons of trust...for me that translated into tons of movies and of course reading. Those 70‘s & 80‘s kids a certain age really did make out very well, and some of that was because of the trust and self-reliance we learned fairly early. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @manifestsanity Please do, the more the merrier! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Melwilk We‘d love to have you! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DivineDiana Put in your hold at the library now! 👍 6y
YouReadMyEyes Wow, I have always wanted to read this. My mother-in-law says this is her favorite book of all time. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @YouReadMyEyes Well grab a copy or pick one up at the library and join us! 6y

My choice for an #outofthisworldbook. It's finally on my shelf after my non-reader husband keeps telling me that he loved it.

Thanks for the chance to win an ARC of your latest, @valeriegeary - I'm in the U.S.

TheLondonBookworm Classic! 7y
Gezemice This is one my husband keeps telling me to read. I have seen a terrible TV adaptation so I was very reluctant, but he insists that the book is a lot better. I have been getting through most of my "must-read" books so I think I will read this soon, too. 7y
quirkyreader This book meant everything to me when I was in grade 8. (edited) 7y
See All 19 Comments
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I've never read it either, but have had it recommended to me by more than one man too. Maybe this one would be another good one to attempt with a group as a #DuneChapterADay thing? 7y
DivineDiana Also on my "must read" list. My best male friend told me it is his favorite. I'm noticing a pattern. ? 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @DivineDiana If we do a buddy read (which would be fun), I have a hashtag! #womenreaddune #dunesnotjustfordudes 😜 7y
DivineDiana @BarbaraTheBibliophage You are a clever one! Perfect! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Hahaha! Works for me! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa And yes @DivineDiana definitely a huge trend here. Hopefully it holds up for us ladies! 7y
Gezemice Lol, I like it! But what if the ladies think, #dunesucks? 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Gezemice That could happen! A bunch of got Tropic of Cancer in a banned books quiz, so we decided to do a readalaong. I think 98% of us hated it. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice @BarbaraTheBibliophage it could be very possible that #DuneIsForDudes but I guess we won't know until we try it. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I'll just make sure that one's not on my to read list now....hahaha 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Nope, wasn't even on my list! 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa All you're missing is racist misogyny. 😝 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Fine by me, I think we've all had more than our fill of that already.😱 7y
TK-421 The Dune series (original 6 books not the new ones) are some of my all-time favourites. I haven't read them for awhile & want to reread them, so a Dune read along sounds like a great place to start! Despite the fact that Dune is often recommended by men, believe me, there are some great female characters in this series! No spoilers, but I just have to say these women are totally bad-ass, with perfect control over their bodies & minds. 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @TK-421 Yay - that‘s great to know! I love me some bad-ass women characters! If you read the comments before yours, you‘ll see that several of us want to read Dune b/c of men who‘ve recommended it to us. (edited) 6y
