The Gododdin | Gillian Clarke

The other cat kindly agreed to model for this picture 😄

My knowledge of Welsh is sufficient to help me appreciate the beauty of the poetry. I don‘t know enough to pick out many words (maybe I would have done a tiny bit better with modern Welsh), but it was fun to recognize a word here and there! Mostly I enjoyed the earliest known reference to King Arthur.

Bookwomble I really liked this book. Gillian Clarke's poetry is wonderful 😊 2mo

The Rebel Nun | Marj Charlier

I decided on The Rebel Nun for #BookedInTime for the #EarlyMedieval theme and it's been sitting on my wishlist since January '24.

Two days ago I'm scrolling through ig and the cover catches my eye on a post from one of my local indie bookstores for an author signing on 9/26. I couldn't believe that not only would I finally get a copy, and meet the author, but that she lives in my city 💞

Now one of these days I'll actually read it 😂

Cuilin There‘s reading books, ordering books, waiting for books, in the mood for a certain book, and organizing books. Different hobbies, all valid!! It‘s time will come. 👊🫶👏 looks good 👍 2mo

I went overboard at the charity shop's book sale but there was a lot more choice than usual on the English book shelves. I think someone (probably American) must have moved away.
I left all the autobiographies of US politicians and business people and all the romances for others....

I love anything Alice Roberts does. Her descriptions and explanation of archaeology and history are so enlightening and captivating on TV, and just as good in book form. Absolutely brilliant.

If you want to learn about the Picts, this is the book to go for. But I'd only recommend it if you're a history buff, because it's heavy on wars and names and the writing style a little dry. I wanted to learn more about the normal folk, but it seems like there isn't a lot of data just yet. There is a bit of this in the afterword of the 2016 edition.
I may have or have not ordered another book by this author 😉

There are so many places and times I‘d want to visit if time travel was a thing but this is not one of them. The book gives a clear picture of a small village during the Middle Ages. There are a few moments of pleasure but it was mostly a time of every moment being about the survival of you, your family and your fellow villagers. It is a wonder anyone survived. 4🌟#BookedinTime #EarlyMedieval

dabbe Boy, are you right! What an awful period to have lived! Got your “pick“ on the spreadsheet! 🤩 2y
thegreensofa I read this for #BookedInTime too. It was exhausting even just reading it! 2y

Grendel | John Gardner

Pickpick

Having taught BEOWULF for a number of years to my sophomore honors, why didn't I have them read this, too? This book is not simply a retelling of BEOWULF from the monster's point of view; it is highly intellectual and philosophical as Grendel seeks to find some sort of meaning to his life. Drawn to and repulsed by humans, he reminds me of Frankenstein's creature, who also seeks the purpose to his existence. ⬇️

dabbe Several philosophies are explored here, most of which I can't wait to look into. The trope of reading a story from the supposed villain's point of view is not new, but it is absolutely heart-wrenching here. I dare anyone who reads this not to be touched by Grendel's utter isolation and loneliness. What a read.

Cuilin I read Beowulf with a group of middle schoolers years ago. I enjoyed it but never thought I‘d read it or anything connected with it until now. I‘m intrigued. 2y
dabbe @Cuilin I will be interested to see what you think. The writing was gorgeous and ghastly as only an intellectual monster's thoughts would be, I guess. But so profound. For me, a whoah book. 💜🩶💜 2y
