Pickpick

One of the book clubs I run at the library wanted to read the first Harry Potter book last year. Most people in the group are older retired teachers who had never read the book before. They enjoyed the first one so much that our first book club read for 2026 is the second book.

Jim Dale does a great job with the audio. And I enjoyed my reread of this one. I will once again discuss all the issues with Rowling as a person at our meeting, though.

MyNamesParadise Harry Potter was such an integral part of my childhood. I was beyond obsessed!! It was really disappointing to learn of her views. I don‘t understand why she would jeopardize the relationship with fans from all over the world by being so hateful about it. I feel like I can‘t say I like Harry Potter, but the truth is I still love it and could see myself continuing to re-read the series as I get older. I‘m almost 34 now. now

Harry's first outing. Very readable and enjoyable children's fiction. (Review pretty much unchanged from when I read it nearly 20 years ago)

Most of my October reads were rather disappointing so top billing for the month goes to the fifth instalment of the Harry Potter series.

I am in no way happy with this author as of late, but I did love these books, and Harry's birthday is quite big in this one. 💛

Bookwormjillk I agree with you, but it does fit very well with this theme. 1w

AnnCrystal Love Harry Potter...will never understand how an author who wrote about racism against Muggles could feel it alright to express prejudice against “anyone“ 🤔🤗💫🪄🧙🏼‍♀️📚💝. 1w

Karisimo It‘s still a great story and a fabulous birthday scene! My 8 year old niece is reading the series for the first time and I‘m kinda envious of her experience! 1w
dabbe @Karisimo This is one series I would love to visit for the 1st time again! 🤩 1w

When the Harry Potter books first came out, I was in my 30s, child-free, and saw no point in reading a children‘s book, so apart from marvelling at the phenomenal success of the books, I mostly ignored them.

Now, I‘m in my 50s, still child free, and, having enjoyed the Cormorant Strike series, decided to read the first HP book, just to see what it was like…. And now I‘ve just finished book 7.

BethM Was it magical for you? 4w
TheEllieMo @BethM I thoroughly enjoyed it, and was also quite surprised. I hadn‘t realised how much darker the later books got. 4w
BethM Yeah 5 is the real turning point in my opinion. 4w
