Beautiful day for some outside reading in the backyard. It is almost sweater weather today and probably will be this evening. Starting the reread of the #OhCanada book. Will post a discussion post on August 31st.

Tamra I am really not ready for sweater weather. I am always in a state of denial until I just can‘t be anymore. 😫 I actually turned on the furnace in the camper this week one morning. 1w
Jess861 @Tamra I'm so ready for some cooler weather! It's been such a scorching hot summer so far here! I'm sure we have more insanely hot days ahead of us. Not sure if I'm ready to be turning on the furnace though, lol! (edited) 7d

#OffMyShelf - memoir
#OhCanada

“Healing isn‘t a freeing experience when you‘re in the middle of it. It feels like land mines are exploding and ripping your flesh apart. Everywhere you step is dangerous.”

Powerful and raw. Knott writes about her struggles with addiction and abuse as an indigenous Canadian. Reminded me also of “Tattoos on the Heart” with its appeal to withhold judgment.

Trigger warnings for drug use, sexual assault and abuse.

Jess861 Glad you enjoyed it! 7d
Ruthiella @Jess861 Definitely glad to read about her challenges and strength in surmounting them. 7d

CarolynM Great review. I hope I‘ll get to this sometime, but probably not in time for the discussion ☹️ 7d
Ruthiella @CarolynM That‘s the beauty of the internet. You can read the discussion and chime in later. 7d
wanderinglynn What an powerful quote! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 1d
Ruthiella @wanderinglynn It was a very honest book IMO. It must have been difficult for her to relive in order to write. 1d

Helen Knott‘s father was sent to a residential school,so he had no role models as to how to parent. But he did learn that parents read to their children before bed. Although he was incredibly uncomfortable in this role as a bedtime reader, he persevered. #OhCanada

Ruthiella I loved this tidbit too. 👍 1w

#WhereAreYouMonday

My current book puts me back in Canada this Monday. A difficult memoir to read because the author has suffered so much pain and violence.

This is an interesting read, if you believe in the alternative healing methods described in this book. Each chapter is spent with a different practitioner and describes their methods. Crystals, psychic surgery, energy body work…I wouldn‘t trust tossing modern medicine aside and swan diving into these methods. While I do believe in energy, I would combine it with modern medicine instead of just relying on that. Some of these other methods, ⬇️

JenniferEgnor such as ‘psychic surgery‘, I would absolutely never go near. 2w

🌟 if I could give this book a million stars I would.

I don't often reread book's but this ladies book's I have the whole collection they are truthful, raw and everything is laid bare, no lies just hurt and healing. Everytime I reread it I find something new and I love the book's all over again.

I bought this after my brother was killed two years ago. Pulled it out because it was prodding me.

4,5/5 ⭐

Very interesting, but unfortunately I could only follow the theoretical side; my main goal was to apply the practical side, but I couldn't do the exercises at all. The book was a bit more spiritual and political than I expected, but all in an appropriate/sensible way.
I think IFS is potentially a therapy that can get to the roots of issues instead of working top-down/just managing symptoms like many common therapies.
