The Invisible Man | Herbert George Wells
post image

“‘Why!‘ said Huxter, suddenly, ‘that's not a man at all. It's just empty clothes. Look! You can see down his collar and the linings of his clothes. I could put my arm -‘

He extended his hand; it seemed to meet something in mid-air, and he drew it back with a sharp exclamation. ‘I wish you'd keep your fingers out of my eye,‘ said the aerial voice.”

To the Lighthouse | Virginia Woolf
post image

“..To be silent; to be alone. All the being and the doing, expansive, glittering, vocal, evaporated; and one shrunk, with a sense of solemnity, to being oneself, a wedge-shaped core of darkness, something invisible to others.”

Mrs Ramsay sits alone, her solitude allows her to distance herself from the others. She seems to be in a meditative state, hands busy but her mind, as if an #invisibletouch of a hand has swept over her, providing calmness.

Tamra How beautiful. 5y
Reviewsbylola Perfect, and so gorgeous. 5y

Hangsaman | Shirley Jackson
post image

Shirley Jackson‘s books often have an eerie, creepy quality. The tagged book is based on the real life disappearance of a college coed in the 1940s.

#invisibletouch #anglophileapril

consonantia I want to read this! The only Jackson I‘ve read is We Have Always Lived in the Castle and it was soooo good and a friend said Hangsaman is even better. 5y
Cinfhen This one sounds good!! 5y
vivastory I enjoyed this one. 5y

In 1895 Ireland, her family claimed Bridget had been taken away by fairies until her burnt body was found in a shallow grave. Four of her family members were charged with her murder that resulted when they tried to banish the fairies from her.

Crazeedi This sounds really good!! 5y
emilyhaldi Those crazy fairies!! 🧚🏻‍♂️🧚🏼‍♀️ 5y
Reviewsbylola This is on my TBR but I‘m concerned about the fairies. 5y
Mdargusch The Irish culture just explained away anything that they didn‘t understand by saying that the fairies were responsible. @Reviewsbylola it‘s actually very fascinating and they refused to believe modern day science. It‘s an interesting historical true crime. (edited) 5y

American Psycho | Bret Easton Ellis

#Invisibletouch #anglophileapril
I can't think of Genesis, Huey Lewis, or Whitney Houston without one fan coming to mind. In the film, Bateman shares his critical insights on these artists with his soon-to-be victims. But the novel has entire chapters of just his analysis, with no other context. The effect is very different: you get more insight into his psychology and how his 'deep thoughts' on art are entwined with commercial success.

Cinfhen I might have to read this book one day!!!! 5y
Mdargusch This is a good one! 5y

emilyhaldi This book scared the shit out of me 5y
Billypar @Mdargusch @emilyhaldi I read it over a decade ago, and it remains the most brutal and disturbing thing I've ever read. @Cinfhen be forewarned! 5y
Reviewsbylola Pat Bateman is one of my faves. I will never hear Sussudio without thinking of him. 🙌🏻🙌🏻 5y
Billypar @Reviewsbylola Yup- ditto 'Hip to Be Square' 5y
batsy I'm the same, can't think about their music without thinking about Bateman 😂😭 5y
Billypar @batsy Thankfully it's not every song. In the case of Huey Lewis, 'Power of Love' still belongs to Back to the Future, and several others to long car trips on family vacations growing up (my dad was a big fan 😁) 5y

(Day 28 - #InvisibleTouch)

*I can only call this a stretch, but it‘s exactly where my mind went with the prompt. Some (suspend disbelief?) “invisible touches” in this novel:
~Rosanna Spearman, who manages to remove an article of clothing without the wearer, Franklin Blake, knowing it;
~Mr Candy, the doctor who secretly administers laudanum to Franklin;
~Franklin, who stole the Moonstone diamond, unbeknownst to himself.
💎 🧪 👰

Cinfhen Plenty of eye rolls 😜🙄well done!!!!! 5y
Mdargusch I need to get to Woman in White. It‘s been on my TBR for a few years. 😬 5y
emilyhaldi Works for me!! Woman in White could certainly work for this prompt too 5y

gradcat @emilyhaldi I agree...I had a hard time picking between the two books. 5y
gradcat @Reviewsbylola @Mdargusch I love these books...I hope you like them! 5y
gradcat @Cinfhen Eye rolls, eh...I wonder what that means...🤔 5y
Cinfhen Your examples were on point but the examples as a reader would cause me eye rolls a plenty!!! I don‘t like suspension of belief as a plot device 5y
gradcat @Cinfhen Oh, yes...you‘re right... I‘m not a big buyer of suspension of (dis)belief either—I agree with you! 5y

Genes might be invisible to the naked eye, but have the ultimate influence on our existence 🧬 I would never normally pick this book up on my own but after seeing so many rave reviews I figured I would give it a shot!...someday.

emilyhaldi I just finished reading this tagged book today and Patti Smith spends a chapter praising Murakami and specifically the book you tagged!!! I have never read any of his books but tbh Wind Up Bird sounds a little too magical for my taste 🤔✨ 5y

vivastory @emilyhaldi I've been meaning to read Smith's book forever, I'm even more intrigued knowing that she talks about Murakami. I loved Wind-up etc., but I think I might like Kafka on the Shore a bit more. They're both big time commitments, so I'd recommend sampling a few pieces from the following short story collection. They're a good representation of his novels 5y
emilyhaldi Thanks for the tip!!! I will start there 😁 5y
Reviewsbylola TVS is one of my favorite movies. I loved the book too! 5y
