This is my current read. My husband asked me if it‘s not too depressing to read. I replied that it‘s deeply sad, but what depresses me now is the current situation in my country (USA). I‘m reading this book as the history it is.

A scared young Jewish boy growing up in Nazi Germany transforms, with boxing lessons, into a braver version of himself as conditions in Germany worsen. I didn‘t love this one, and I think it‘s because I felt no emotional connection to it. Its reach is limited by narrator Karl‘s naive, youthful perspective that, in my opinion, remains unrealistically naive even after what should be his coming of age.
22 #97 I really enjoy Sarah Sundin‘s books. Clean. Well written. Maybe a little romancy but no sex scenes so I can deal.
Even though this is considered Christian Fiction & that isn‘t my thing, I gave this 5 stars! The author did a brilliant job of lining up factual events w/ suspense & you really cared about the characters! This takes place in pre World War 2 in Germany. It has a great ending, even when the world is on brink of war. I highly recommend this one & would read more from the author. It was interesting to read about a career woman in the 1930s!
Evelyn was such a likable character. Feminine, yet strong. Their romance developed slowly but solidly. The suspense was intense. It was as if you were watching a war-era movie. From the beginning to the end, you were drawn in and held on the edge of your seat, waiting for that other shoe to drop and the danger to increase. This was one of those stay-up-too-late-so-I-can-finish books. Another winner for Ms. Sundin.
@Lovesbooks87 you made my day, again! I had an observation today. It went well, but I am exhausted today and so worn out! This was an amazing surprise to come home to and my students will be so pleased!!
The captivating plot that flows beautifully, the meticulous research needed to build such a life-like 1938 Germany, and the deeply layered and complex characters are the author's trademarks. In this book, she goes above and beyond to infuse a heart-pounding suspense/intrigue and a delicious dose of humor.
I received the book from the publisher via Interviews & Reviews and opinions are solely my own.
This graphic novel briefly tells the story of 6 children who survive the Holocaust. It manages honesty while considering its young audience. The illustrations were very well done.
I am not usually a huge history person, but this was very simple and done tastefully. For those who really want to learn more there are other books to read further.
