Baldwin's first novel, it draws heavily on his life and experiences. Set in 1930s Harlem, the frame story is of John's birthday and religious epiphany. But the day's events ate expanded on through the narratives of his parents and aunt, covering moments from the civil war forward.

Race relations underlie the story, but the main focus is faith, religion, and sin. The mastery of language is visible, but the audio narration is less than compelling.

Liz_M @AceOnRoam I don't want to talk about it 😢 Bookshelves will be the last thing in place, as soon as I can get some shims for the uneven floor. It's only been five weeks since I moved...... 7y
AceOnRoam @Liz_M oh god, sorry I mentioned it. It seems longer than that. Sending hugs....and patience. The builder or flooring dude better hope he never meets you in a dark alley. 7y

An enthralling, but heartbreaking tale about the survivors of the Ravensbrück Concentration Camp and the woman who broke them and the woman who helped them heal. A must read for sure! #LitsyAtoZ #LetterL #LitsyReadingChallenge #LRC2

What an inspiring story! While the writing wasn't the greatest and often times felt disjointed and jumbled to me, I fell in love with the stories of these women. This quote by Macie is really quite fitting. Working crazy hours, raising families and sending rockets into space. Those are some incredible people. #litsyreadingchallenge #lrc2 #litsyatoz

Only sleep, work, and the possibility of nightmares kept me from finishing this book in one sitting! Very well done, very suspenseful! I had a few "wtf" moments and at one point I actually finished a chapter and shouted "OH. MY. GOD.", which earned me a ~look~ from hubby. I had thought I figured out the ending - nope!! Total surprise! Great #BOTM pick and hey, #LitsyReadingChallenge #girlsinthetitle #LRC2

KilgoreTrout Loved this one too! Just finished two nights ago after staying up toooo late ha 7y

Great narration from Finty Williams (Judi Dench's daughter) & Emilia Fox (daughter of Edward). The chapters go between 'Then' and 'Now', when Emma (then) and Jane (now), rent the same unusual home. 1 Folgate Street is a minimalist's dream but comes with some very creepy rules and a very controlling architect. Lies are revealed, and twists and turns ensue. Not ground breaking, but a fun, pageturning physiological thriller. #LRC2 #withgirlinthetitle

Reviewsbylola I liked the idea of a smart house but his one never really got off the ground for me. I didn't think the characters felt fully fleshed out. 8y
Ms_T Great collage. 8y
KarenUK @Reviewsbylola not sure I would have liked it as much in print... but the audio narrators were great.... (edited) 8y
Peterfox123 @Reviewsbylola I agree. I liked so much about this book but the controlling architect character seemed too close to a cliche. 8y

#nextup... this one on audio for #LRC2 for #LitsyReadingChallenge 'With GIRL in the title'. I'm excited to get started now I know who the narrators are.... Emilia Fox and Finty Williams! (Both great narrators who have pretty talented thespian parents too!)

Verity Emilia Fox will forever be Georgiana Darcy to me - I refuse to believe she's over 40 now! (I've seen Finty Williams live on stage and she's very good too!) 8y
ScrappyMags I loved that book! 8y

I finally listened to this on one Audible, and I LOVED it. It was totally not what I was expecting from a "zombie" novel - it was much more than that. I wasn't blown away by the ending, but I kind of appreciate that it stopped where it did. #LRC2 #girlstitle @jessica

rachelm Listening to this on audio now. So, so good. 8y
