Bailedbailed

2/5

Dacian empath, Malina, is captured in the aftermath of battle where she failed to protect her Celtic adopted family and taken as a slave by the Roman general and dragon shifter, Julianus.

The combination of relationship dynamic and power imbalance between Malina and Julianus with the ancient Roman inspired system of slavery, was too off-putting for me, and I just couldn't get past it. It was also a darker romance than I had expected.

A look at the lives of J.M. Barrie & neighbours, the Llewelyn Davies family, whose five boys were instrumental in the development of the story of Peter Pan - especially Michael, their fourth son, on whom the main character was based. At first the friendships were thought to be of little concern but eventually Arthur Llewelyn Davies moved his family out of London to get away from Barrie's influence. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf In this he was thwarted by his wife who facilitated Barrie's involvement. Unlike Peter Pan, Michael did indeed grow up, & as he did so he tried to break free of Barrie's influence, but only managed to do so in death. Accident or suicide? We will probably never know.

If events happened as they are laid out here, Barrie's presence was a wedge between the boys' parents, Sylvia & Arthur, who grew apart just before Arthur's tragic death of cancer at

OutsmartYourShelf a relatively young age, & Barrie's continued influence fractured this family from within. Even after reading this, I'm still unsure as to whether it could be termed emotional abuse, but the dynamic between Michael & Barrie became unhealthy for both of them.

Even with this darkness at the heart of one of our best-loved children's story, there were points when my attention wandered.

OutsmartYourShelf The writing style is quite rambling & the narrative sometimes went off on tangents instead of sticking to the main point. I found it a bit confusing at times, but I hadn't known about the link between the Llewelyn Davies family & the du Mauriers before reading this. 2⭐

I listened to the audiobook for #WithTheBanned and I‘m including it with #Read2025 because I actually finished the book and for #SeriesLove2025 because it‘s the first book in a trilogy that I won‘t continue. I gave it two stars on Goodreads because the unusual style of poetry and prose is the only thing I liked about the book. There are several reasons I didn‘t like it. I‘m tired of YA and teenage angst. I‘m tired of multi book series. (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 But I think the main reason is because I read Go Ask Alice in junior high and, even though I now know it‘s not a true story from a dead teenage girl‘s diary, it still set the standard as a cautionary tale about drugs and sex. There are new drugs available now but I don‘t think the book lives up to the hype. Ordinarily I would bail on a book I didn‘t like but I wanted to see if the book ever got better and I don‘t believe it did. 3d
Andrew65 Oh no, hope your next book is better. 3d
CatLass007 @Andrew65 Killers of a Certain Age is excellent and fun. 3d

CatLass007 @TheSpineView It already is. 3d
5feet.of.fury I‘ll be reading this one too, I know the series was very popular when it was first released but I was out of the target demographic at that point & never paid it any mind. 3d
CatLass007 @5feet.of.fury I liked her writing style. I hope you and the rest of the group like it more than I did. 3d

DogMomIrene Years ago a parent challenged book 2 Glass in our MS library. The librarian knew I had a BS in journalism so she asked me to be on the “book ban” committee. I was like, it‘s freaking awful. The cheap voyeurism. The cliched “poetry”. The obvious money grab with a series. BUT I wouldn‘t ban it. Thankfully, the other teachers, parents, and community members agreed. Not sure the same results would hold today. Better luck with your next read! 🍀 16h
CatLass007 @DogMomIrene Is MS Mississippi? I‘m surprised that you were able to keep it in the library. I live in East Tennessee and I‘m surprised there are any books in our library at. Thank you for not banning it. It may be awful but if I had kids I wouldn‘t want anyone deceiving what my kids were allowed to read except me. My parents were fairly conservative but after I learned to read, I was never without a book. My parents knew what I was (cont)⬇️ 16h
CatLass007 reading and never told me I couldn‘t read something. These days, I buy books because they‘ve been banned with the belief that anything worth banning is worth reading. (edited) 16h
DogMomIrene @CatLass007 Middle School. I was out in Arizona. Tucson was a blue spot but this was an affluent area, so some conservative folks. I did my student teaching at William Blount High School back in the day. Spent 3 years at UTK. I think that‘s where I fell in love with fall. 9h
CatLass007 @DogMomIrene Middle School never crossed my mind. LOL. We had junior high where I grew up in West Virginia. The Fall is beautiful in East Tennessee. The politics, not so much. (edited) 8h

TLDR: Not a bad book per se, but the MC spoiled it for me.

This could have been a really dark, almost gothic, mystery thriller - all the ingredients were there, but it was a bit of a miss for me. I think the issue is that the main character, Alex Kelly, is difficult to like. She does all the clichéd things: drinks too much making her unreliable, rushes into situations without thinking, thinks she's the only one who can solve a cold case, (cont)

OutsmartYourShelf thinks she's the only one with any tragedy in her life, blah blah blah blah. Yes, I really didn't care for her character at all if you can tell so it affected my enjoyment of this one. 3.25⭐

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Bloomsbury Publishing PLC/Raven Books, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

This is the second book in the Mayhem series and I was expecting another great story since I enjoyed the first one. Unfortunately, this one fell flat for me. Both of the MCs acted immature for their ages and they annoyed me. Not sure if I will continue this series. 2.5 - 3🌟

January 2025 Book #11
This retelling for me is poor integrating and even boring. I‘m not the target audience but didn‘t like it. However, the illustrations are beautiful made by the author. 2⭐️

I expected to enjoy this book, but I actually found myself having to force myself to pick it up and continue. It all felt a bit too preachy. Shriver is, as far as I‘m aware, a hugely respected writer, so I‘m not sure if she‘s just not my thing or if this is not her usual standard. I think I need to read We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Octoberwoman I loved We Need to Talk About Kevin, which was absolutely harrowing, and then I read Big Brother, which wasn‘t nearly as good. I haven‘t convinced myself to try the author again since then. 1w

Pickpick

I normally zip through Douglas's books. In this one, I reached a point where I guessed what was going to happen and I couldn't finish. Therefore, I put the book down and picked it up again a couple of days ago. No surprises. Just as expected. The plot was good just predictable. 3.5🌟 #Read2025 @DieAReader At just over 500 pages this is one for #ChunksterChallenge2025 @Amiable #AllergicToChunksters @julieclair
