Know My Name: A Memoir | Chanel Miller

Pickpick

This one will stay with me for a long time. I can‘t stop talking about it, and about all the issues it brought up. It‘s well done, honest, vulnerable, fierce, and intense as all heck.

All my #nfornonfiction pals need to read this, because of the connections to Down Girl by Kate Manne. (If you other Littens loved either book, read the other too!)

Riveted_Reader_Melissa It‘s on my to read list! I have 3, that are fairly new releases that I know will be tough, but important reads. Did you listen on audiobook or read? I heard she read it herself. 3w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I read the library book. Now I really want to read Catch and Kill and She Said. But it could be too disturbing ... 3w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Those are the other two on my list! Know My Name is on hold at the library...but I‘ve debated buying....even though I‘ve been trying to buy less and use the library more. (edited) 3w
See All 21 Comments
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘d buy it on a sale, but not full price. Just on principle, not a quality judgement. I went a little nuts with all the end of year deals. 😌 3w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I understand... I‘ve been know to read them from the library, and if I love it buy it when it goes on sale months or years later. It‘s one of those things only other book readers would understand.😉 3w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes, exactly so. We get each other! 3w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I feel like I need a litsy postal markup just for these reads, or a book club, somewhere we can discuss them and vent. 3w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Good idea! I‘d be up for something like that. 3w
marleed This is coming soon to a library loan for me! 3w
marleed @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I thrift books I‘ve read through the library on a near weekly basis. It‘s so much fun and such a deal that I just call it my entertainment. And it‘s super easy for me to continue to donate a book I thrifted. It‘s so hard for me to let go of a full price book that now I only pay full price when I gave it a 5* thru the lib but must own now. 3w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @marleed When you read a lot, it‘s really the only way you can keep reading and not go broke. Kindle sales and library sales are great places to pick up books for me too. I wish they‘d invent a better ebook rental site.... like Netflix or GameFly but for ebooks. 3w
marleed @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I love loaning ebooks from my library with Overdrive. I really do feel like it‘s an amazon free rental for 21 days. 3w
Jovy I listened to this on audio thru my library and you can hear her choking up at times. Such a tough read but really enlightening! 3w
4thhouseontheleft This is on my TBR for this year, but need to give some space after reading She Said. 3w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @marleed What about Scribd? I think it‘s a really reasonable price for unlimited books? Of course, the library is still free and it supports the community. 3w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Jovy I can imagine. It was hard to read in print, I think I‘d find it even more intense in her own voice. 3w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft I agree. We watched the new movie Bombshell recently, which wasn‘t nearly as intense as this book. But between the two, I may need a break before reading She Said. 3w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @marleed I have it on hold at my library now...they have the ebook and the wait time is (according to Libby) approximately 22 weeks. 🙈 3w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage I still use Scribd... they have it on audiobook, it‘s apparently very popular though because I can‘t borrow it until next month. They say unlimited, but it‘s usually more like 2 audiobooks a month and then you‘re cut off until the next month rolls around. They are better about ebooks though, they just don‘t have her‘s in ebook form. 3w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @marleed I was shocked to see this on the New Books shelf when I was picking up a hold. With wait times like that, I figured I should grab it up! 3w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I think they‘re stingier with new audiobooks. Backlist stuff is still available even when the newer stuff is cut off. And you‘re right, the ebooks are more plentiful. 3w

I feel so very accomplished to have finished this book! It took me a while! This is a philosophical look at identifying and defining misogyny. Yes, it is dense because it has so many footnotes and references, and they were all worth it. What a thorough look at a complex yet ubiquitous problem. In a nutshell, misogyny is when women are punished or thought lesser for stepping out of their prescribed social norms.
Thanks again, #NforNonfiction group!

tjwill I‘ll get this in the mail this week, Barbara! Thanks for being patient with me! 4mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I fully agree, it was a tough read, but a great one and well worth the extra time. 4mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage Great review. I‘m glad you could get through it, with life and all. I still can‘t believe I was powering through to finish in ten days (I think it was that few)! 4mo

tjwill @BarbaraTheBibliophage Thanks! Wow, ten days! It took me nearly two months! And now I really want to go back and read all the notes again. I hope you will enjoy going back through everything with all the annotations! 4mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @tjwill It was WAY too much. My poor brain was exhausted the whole time. 4mo
tjwill @BarbaraTheBibliophage I can imagine! It is a lot to process! 4mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @tjwill I‘m really looking forward to seeing everyone‘s comments! 4mo

Not done yet but I‘m eating this one up. Highly recommend this and wish I‘d found it sooner - this would have been a great #nfornonfiction group read

Taking the day off today and going through books that have come back to me recently, reading all the great comments from everyone and remembering what a great book this was.

I hope we can plan again for a #NForNonfiction2020 reboot, trilogy, sequel, etc.😉

You ladies always pick the best books that I didn‘t even know I really really needed to read!

Gezemice What‘s the nonfiction group? I enjoy my nonfiction, although I would avoid politics... 5mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice It was part of a Litsy Postal Mark Up group. We signed up to the nonfiction group, each picked one book, underlined and commented on it, and then mailed it onto the next person in a circle. This was my pick coming back to me with everyone‘s notes and comments inside. 5mo
Gezemice That sounds really cool. Writing in the book is a bit of a funny feeling for me though... and I would never mail a thing, lol, I am the least reliable for such a thing. But it does look like loads of fun! I am glad you are enjoying it. 5mo

It‘s home! Thanks for all your great comments, #nfornonfiction crew! Danielle, puns in Shakespeare sounds like a fun paper to write and makes me want to reread Much Ado. Barbara, I haven‘t finished Down Girl yet, but will try to finish in the next couple weeks. Melissa, thanks for the cards along the way! I‘m glad we all read together again! 💕

BarbaraTheBibliophage Okay, no rush! Glad your book is home with all of our added “content.” 5mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa So great isn‘t it! Maybe we can reconvene next summer? @tjwill @daniwithtea @BarbaraTheBibliophage 5mo
tjwill @BarbaraTheBibliophage Thanks! I had to take a break for some books I had to review, but I‘m back at it now! 5mo

Gezemice 6 buddy reads! Lol I can‘t keep up with 2! 5mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice #StarWarsBuddyRead (Solo), plus the #BBBBC (Sleeping Giants), ShakespeareBuddyRead (Merry Wives of Windsor), and PratchettPosse (Witches Abroad) which you read too. The other too were for a Litsy Postal Mark Up group I signed up for last year, and we picked to send and mark up nonfiction reads, we enjoyed it so we did it again this summer (Down Girl, and The Pun Also Rises were ones, the others in this rotation where The World Without... 5mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...Us, and No Apparent Distress). I enjoyed them all for different reasons, so far it‘s always been a good eclectic mix 5mo

Ohhh my goodness. I always forget how busy August is, and how quickly it goes. Apologies especially to my #nfornonfiction ladies and everyone in the fitness challenge - my notifications say it‘s been three weeks since I logged in to Litsy! @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage @tjwill I very very much enjoyed reading with you again this summer - the last book went out a week ago. Thank you for the fantastic reads!!

daniwithtea @wanderinglynn thank you for all you do, I am still on the fitness train even if I don‘t take the opportunity to say so here. 5mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage Sounds like a great plan! 5mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I loved our summer reading too! I can‘t believe another summer‘s gone! 5mo
tjwill I‘ve enjoyed our nonfiction summer reading together too! 5mo

And enjoyable little book about the pun, far more for its chapters about language development biologically and cross culturally than most of the puns themselves. 🤪

...and surprisingly a few insights that I‘ll be thinking about as I read more with the #ShakespeareReadAlong and wondering how many other layers I‘m missing in the plays.

I only shut the book for a minute and look what happened! 🤣

I thought my #NForNonfiction ladies would appreciate my pen thief, Bella, in action! Hopefully nobody in our group is allergic to cats...I promise I don‘t usually let them roll around on our books. 🤷‍♀️

#CatsOfLitsy

BarbaraTheBibliophage Funny! 😹😻😻😹 5mo
tjwill Cuteness! I have a cat too, and she does this kind of thing if I leave a book laying out too. 5mo
