Pickpick

This is a hard book to review/rate, but it‘s a pick for me.

This remarkable debut novel has themes of classism, racism, sexuality, and dominance of the wealthy, not to mention drug addiction, mental health issues, and a damaged justice system. I cannot speak too much to the actions in the book, as it would be very spoiler-ish, but it‘s a book to make you think about life and prejudice and what choice you would make, and living with that choice.⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️ The story is told by Rachel, who in 1999 is a recent high school graduate. Rachel has baggage. Lots of baggage. She‘s had a falling out with her friends and feels very isolated. And bitter. Her bitterness is laced through this entire narrative. Rachel is also unlikeable, and her prejudices and perceived hurts at times make her an unreliable narrator. To escape her boredom at home before college, she agrees to spend the summer with her aunt‘s ⬇️ 1d
Librarybelle ⬆️ family in Greenwich, Connecticut. If you‘re not in the know, it‘s a high society landscape. Rachel befriends her young cousin‘s nanny, Claudia. But, from the very beginning, Rachel foreshadows a tragedy as she unfolds that summer for the reader. When tragedy does strike, Rachel is left with a choice, and it‘s the consequences with that choice that she continues to wrestle with for the rest of the book. Told in three parts, part one is a slow ⬇️ 1d
Librarybelle ⬆️ build to the tragedy. It‘s a perfect slow build of suspense. You kinda figure out what the outcome of the tragedy is with the breadcrumbs Rachel places in her narrative, but when the tragedy happens…just wow. Part two is the aftermath, told a little bit quicker, as Rachel blames everyone else for the choice she made and how she feels from it (she plays the victim well, though I had no sympathy for her). Part three, the shortest section, ⬇️ 1d

Librarybelle ⬆️ is an epilogue that seems to want to tie things together, though it is a bit rushed. As I said, Rachel is bitter and feels like life has let her down. Personally, as a loner and introvert and one who feels isolated at times, Rachel‘s actions made me take a step back and examine how I perceive my actions. I do have bitterness, but I hope I handle it with more grace than Rachel does. I think I did like this book because of the narration. ⬇️ 1d
Librarybelle ⬆️ Imani Jade Powers does an amazing job with this book and really includes the bitter tone in Rachel‘s narration. Had I read this on my own rather than listen to it, I think I‘d have a different feel for the book. Thanks to #NetGalley for this #ALC , and I completed this during the #NetGalleyGroup #NetGalleyReadathon this past weekend. The book debuts today! @AllDebooks 1d

It's our last day for July's #readathon 📚

How did you do?
Did you meet your goals?
Did the readathon help give you a nudge?

I've enjoyed hosting it. It's certainly helped give me a kickstart back into Netgalley life. I've enjoyed reading your comments and posts.

See you on 15th August for another round of #ARCs 😀

All welcome to join us. Please let me know if you wish to be added/removed from the taglist.

DGRachel Umm…I read about 30 pages or so of the ARC I‘d planned to finish. It‘s just not holding my attention and I switched over to a nearly 400 page ebook that returns to the library in 3 days. There‘s always next weekend, right? 😂 2d

Librarybelle I did complete my #ALC (it‘s published tomorrow, so I‘ll post my review then). I did not start my #ARC , but I think I‘ll have a better plan going into the August reading…more specific goals and such. Thanks for bringing this back! 2d
AllDebooks @DGRachel Well, 30 pages is better than nothing. I get why you would prioritise the library book. Thank you for joining in. 😀 2d
AllDebooks @Librarybelle Yay, well done. 👏 I really needed spurring on, and it's always better to have company. 😀 2d
AllDebooks I've 100 pages left of The Tesla Files. I could not stop reading! I'll start my fiction tonight. Of my 10 reviews, I've completed 5. I just need to post them now. 2d
sebrittainclark I completed one of the ARCs I was reading, and caught up on the 4 reviews I needed to write. 2d
Deblovestoread I didn‘t finish but did make progress. 2d
AllDebooks @sebrittainclark That's great. Well done. 🙌 2d
AllDebooks @Deblovestoread it all counts. 🙌 2d
Bookish_Thoughts DNF‘ed one book, finished another, and caught up on reviews, so yay me. 🙂 This was fun! Thanks for hosting. 2d
PuddleJumper Actually read an eARC today. It was fun but I was reading the Kindle version and it would randomly start a new line mid-word. It was so annoying! Seems to be a common issue when reading NetGalley books on Kindle 2d
AllDebooks @Bookish_Thoughts that's great. Well done. 👏 24h
AllDebooks @PuddleJumper I've never tried them on my Kindle as I've heard its problematic. Well done on finishing one. 👏 24h

BookmarkTavern I really enjoyed this mystery novel! 3d
AllDebooks @BookmarkTavern I like the look of this 3d
AllDebooks I really enjoyed Michelle Paver's new novel. A ghost story set in the rainforest of South America. One for #NaturaLitsy 3d

Librarybelle My favorite #ALC is this one, a top so far for 2025: 3d
Librarybelle As for an #ARC , this was an enjoyable read, since I‘m about all things The Golden Girls: 3d
DGRachel My fav ARC read of the year is a Romantasy debut with sirens, so it has a bit of a dark, Hans Christian Andersen Little Mermaid vibe. 3d
DGRachel @Librarybelle I have Murder by Cheesecake on my shelf to read. It sounds delightful! 3d
DGRachel @BookmarkTavern I will have to look for that one. It sounds like it has all of my favorite mystery novel elements 😱 3d
Bookish_Thoughts So far my favorite #ARC is The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones. I‘ve read a lot of his work, but not all of it. (edited) 3d
sebrittainclark My favorite I read in the last month was Automatic Noodle by Annalee Newitz, which is a cozy sci-fi novella about robots opening a restaurant. I've had Future of Another Timeline on my TBR for a while, but this was the first time I read one of their books, and I'll definitely read more. 3d
AllDebooks @Bookish_Thoughts he is very good. I'm looking forward to reading this one. 2d
AllDebooks @sebrittainclark lol, I love the title, and the plot sounds cute. ❤️ 2d
AllDebooks @Librarybelle both of those look good. Golden girls cozy mystery is a genius idea. 2d
AllDebooks @DGRachel that looks so good. 2d
PuddleJumper I just got approved for the second in the Hollow and the Haunted duology - The Forsaken and the Fated, so would recommend that (😅) and the first in the series 2d

AllDebooks I'm reading an investigative journalism expose of Tesla and Musk. It's so gripping, I can't put it down. Available in Read Now section. 4d
Librarybelle I‘m listening to my ALC, Greenwich by Kate Broad, and I plan to pick out my ARC today! 4d
See All 18 Comments
Amor4Libros I started First Time, Long Time by Amy Silverberg. I have about 8 other ARCs going 🤣🤣, but I‘m challenging myself to finish this one by Tue (pub date). 4d
DGRachel I started Beasts of Carnaval by Rosalia Rodrigo. I‘m not not enjoying it, but I‘m struggling to find anything that holds my attention. Outside thoughts keep creeping into my brain and distracting me from the story. 😭 4d
Chrissyreadit @AllDebooks 💙💙💙💙💙 4d
sebrittainclark I just started Awakened by Laura Elliot. She's a new to me author, and I'm intrigued by the concept so far. I haven't read much dystopian fiction in years, but I've read quite a few this year and am enjoying the genre. 4d
Deblovestoread I‘m reading The Girls Who Grew Big. I like it but am in a bit of a slump so it‘s getting read in short spurts. I loved her debut 4d
AllDebooks @Librarybelle ❤️🙌❤️ 4d
AllDebooks @Amor4Libros 8 arcs!!! Blimey, you have your hands full. 4d
AllDebooks @DGRachel Oh no, intrusive thoughts are a pain in the ass. Have you tried some centering techniques or relaxation exercises? I found that I did better with audiobooks when stress or anxiety levels are high. 4d
AllDebooks @sebrittainclark 👀 Ooooh, that sounds so good. Stacked! 📚 4d
AllDebooks @Deblovestoread another one stacked! 📚😅 4d
DGRachel @AllDebooks I have a whole arsenal of mindfulness techniques but things are so bad right now that I don‘t even have the energy to implement any of them. It will pass. I usually rely on audiobooks at times like these, too, but they‘re even harder for me to get into right now. 🤷🏻‍♀️A local indie bookseller always gives me great recs for books that shut out the world, and she was working today, so pause on the ARC while I fall into another book. 4d
AllDebooks @DGRachel I'm so sorry you're having a tough time. Sending hugs. xx 🫂 4d
Bookish_Thoughts I‘m struggling with The Marigold Cottages Murder Collective. It‘s not holding my attention very well. I‘d forgotten I‘d started before and then forgot about it. 😬 4d
Bookish_Thoughts I picked it up last night, saw I was less than 40% into it, and bailed. #Hailthebail indeed. 3d

Hi #NetGalleyGroup

I hope it‘s not too late to join. I just learned about this today and it‘s my book club weekend so I don‘t think I‘ll get anything read BUT I am going to sit down and plan for the upcoming months. My ratio is at 23% and I really need to get it up.

I hope everyone gets lots of pages in. #NGGReadarhon @AllDebooks

AllDebooks Welcome, it's good to have you with us. I have a similar ratio (29%). 😳 5d

Three reviews down… but I have about a dozen more to write and probably another dozen books half finished that I‘ll work on during the #netgalleygroup #readathon
My goal is to get all those reviews written and posted and finish (and review) at least 3 of my started ARCs during the July readathon.
Still barely a dent in 343 titles but it‘s so hard to resist requesting things that sound good!!

AllDebooks Well done. 🙌 Wait, there's a new Ian McEwan. 😀 5d

I need to clear down some ARCs, I've got some from last year and I feel guilty about ... But not guilty enough to prioritise them 😅

#NetGalleyGroup @AllDebooks

Lkempf I have ARCs from 2021. I almost don‘t care anymore. 5d

Bookwormjillk My goal is to read and review one ARC per month. I think this month I might tackle something from my Library Thing Early Reviewers list since I‘m pretty far behind there. Hopefully that counts! 5d
AllDebooks @Bookwormjillk If it's an ARC, it counts. Good luck. 😀 5d
Amor4Libros This looks fun! I would like to be added to the tag, please 😊 5d
AllDebooks @Amor4Libros Done! Welcome to #NGG 😊 Here's a link to the post with the dates for the rest of the year. https://litsy.com/p/WVFZdzVCWm4w 5d
AllDebooks 👋 I'm Debs and I'm looking forward to hosting our readathons. I read everything, so I'm excited to see your goals. I'll probably extend my tbr tenfold, but that's what we're here for, right? I posted my goals separately https://litsy.com/p/S3BrRlBCOUJI 5d
Librarybelle Yay! I think I will finish my current audiobook, which is an ALC from NetGalley. I would also like to read one book this weekend from my massive queue. I‘m setting low goals this time, since I seem to be far behind everything else. Thanks for hosting this again! As for tips, don‘t be afraid to request a title, even if you‘ve been rejected in the past…you never know when you will be granted access! 5d
AllDebooks @Librarybelle Good luck with your goal. 😊 I thought a monthly event might help clear those backlogs. Little and often is the way. That's a great tip! You never know. 🤞 5d
DGRachel I keep up with reviewing as I read, but I‘m so far behind on actually reading. My goal for the rest of the year is to read my current list before the publication dates. I can‘t even think about the backlog right now. 😂 For this month, I have 2 books that publish on the 29th. I hope to get through both this weekend. Thanks for the nudge! 5d
rubyslippersreads I‘m terrible about reviewing, so my goal is to review at least three books (I‘ve read two and am close to finishing the third). 5d
sebrittainclark My goal for the year is to end with a higher ratio than I started with. I've been holding steady basically all year, but I'm hoping to raise it a bit more this summer to give myself a better shot at my goal, since I tend to drop my ratio at lot at the end of the year 5d
Bookish_Thoughts I‘m usually pretty good about keeping up, but not this summer. (For good reasons! Well, except the “got sick” one). I have several reviews to write. I use the “lists” feature on NetGalley. One is organized by “pub date.” Once reviewed, I delete it from the list. It‘s good to see it shrink. If I missed posting a review by pub date, I move it to my “past due” list and focus on the “pub date” list. Books deleted from my lists remain on the original. (edited) 5d
AllDebooks @DGRachel Yay, glad to have you join us. Good luck with your chosen reads. 😊 5d
AllDebooks @rubyslippersreads I find it hard to keep up, too. Good luck finishing your 3rd book. 😊 5d
AllDebooks @sebrittainclark That would be progress! Good luck increasing your ratio. 😊 5d
AllDebooks @Bookish_Thoughts That's a great habit to get into. Thanks for the tip. 😊 5d
BookmarkTavern I‘d love to join in! 5d
AllDebooks @BookmarkTavern Great, thanks for joining us. Here's a link to the monthly dates 😊 https://litsy.com/p/WVFZdzVCWm4w 5d
DGRachel @Bookish_Thoughts I didn‘t know there was a list feature on NetGalley! I keep a spreadsheet but I love how you track your ARCs!! 5d
PuddleJumper I just started Blood Over Bright Haven so no ARCs this weekend 😅 I'd like to read one a month going forward, I'm just not in the mood for a lot of them and I want to give them a fair chance. 5d
AllDebooks @PuddleJumper I think that's a good plan. 👍 5d
