Night and Day | Virginia Woolf
post image

#VirginiaBloomsberries

I feel quite disappointed that I'm only just getting around to her work this late in life. Thank goodness, I've started now.
Anyway, let's talk about Night and Day?

☕️ Did you enjoy Woolf's intricate examination of romantic entanglements in 1920s London?
☕️ Did you like her characters? Does anyone stand out?
☕️ Do you think Woolf captured the changing societal times of post war England?

AnishaInkspill I read this a few years back and enjoyed parts of it but if I read this again, I would enjoy it more as there are many scenes that I can recall better than other books. Knowing little about that historical time, I can imagine the journey both Mary and Katherine are true of that time. 4d
AllDebooks @AnishaInkspill I was completely surprised at how funny it was. Woolf sure does give good satire. I thoroughly enjoyed it. 4d
AllDebooks I've never come across such a fickle character as William. His constant dramas were exhausting. As for backup plans, he did remind me of Austen's Mr Collins a lot! 4d
AnishaInkspill @AllDebooks yeah, Woolf's sense of humour is a surprise, have you read her Flush: a biography? if not I won't say anything more and let you read it whenever you get a chance. 3d

kspenmoll I am up early for a weekend- 5:30- this is a lovely spot to say Happy Saturday all! My day is meeting an old friend for coffee, errands, laundry(porch pillows, slowly putting porch items away), a walk, then hoping for a night of reading. Right now I am enjoying my first cup of coffee, oatmeal with milk & maple syrup, with Emmy curled up on my lap. 📘☕️🥣🐾 I wish everyone a wonderful day. (edited) 1w
kspenmoll @Sace I get it! Sipping mine now!☕️ 1w

Sace @kspenmoll Sounds like you have a busy day ahead. I only have the grocery store and lunch with my husband in the to do list. Dewey‘s 24 hour readathon starts at 7 my time so I‘m hoping to get a long stretch of reading in. I won‘t make 24 hours but I‘ll get *some* reading in. 1w
Librarybelle Happy Saturday! I‘m getting over a cold, so moving a little slow this weekend. I have my usual cleaning routine plus a few other things to take care of that cropped up. But, like @Sace , I hope to do some reading for the Dewey readathon today. 1w
AllDebooks @Sace ☕️👌Soynds like you have a blissful day planned. Enjoy your lunch x 1w
AllDebooks @kspenmoll putting away the outdoor furniture is the only thing I don't like about autumn. It's far too damp here to leave it. We have mist or fog most mornings. Enjoy your reading. x 1w
AllDebooks @Librarybelle plenty of rest and readibg shoukd set you right. Feel better x 1w
Librarybelle Thanks, @AllDebooks ! ❤️ 1w
AllDebooks I'm actually feeling very sorry for myself. Just spent 3 months getting better and starting to feel more like myself. I've now got shingles! MOTHERTRUCKER!!!🤬 I would be grateful for any distraction from the pain as it's a bloomin big ouchy. Any recs? 1w
AllDebooks On the plus side, I've had plenty of reading time. Just need to catch up on my scores now for #HauntedShelf 1w
AllDebooks Atm, I'm really enjoying my #letterZ choice for #AtoZReadathon 1w

Sace @Daisey that sounds lovely. 1w
Sace @AllDebooks thanks! We have a favorite Thai restaurant that we go to every Saturday. 1w
Cuilin @AllDebooks oh sorry Deb that‘s awful. Ugh I have been listening to BBC‘s radio plays Rumpole. They‘re such a good balance of light and fun with a little sprinkling of mystery. I‘ve been listening to them last thing at night, delightful. I‘m almost done and I will definitely miss them. I found them on Audible but they‘re probably on BBC player or something. Oh, and some of them are played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Hope you feel better soon. X 1w
AllDebooks @Cuilin thanks, that sounds perfect. I'll check it out. x 1w
dabbe So sorry to read about your shingles, @AllDebooks. I hope your reading is providing plenty of distraction. 🖤🧡🖤 Today in Phoenix, it will be 96º F (36º C), so we're STILL staying inside and relaxing after our relaxing week up in pine country. Hoping for a power day tomorrow, though. Hope everyone has a lovely day--whatever you're doing! 🤩 1w
julieclair Ugh… shingles! I have heard they are just miserable. Sure do hope you get over them quickly. My only recommendation would be audiobooks. I find I get less distracted with them than I do with regular books. 💙💙💙 1w

Hhhhmm, I found this quite irritating on a few levels. I didn't connect with any character, didn't feel the enlightenment. It was a disappointment as I adored her other 2 books.
However, the writing is good. I think this is a bit of a hit and miss with a lot of people.

This is such a thorough, complex history of women, health and medicine. There is nothing new but this remains an important discussion of how men and medicine has treated women over centuries. Warning - it is enraging and at times distressing.

#VirginiaBloomsberries September #buddyread is Two Stories. This is her 2nd publication from 1917. It was published by The Hogarth Press, set up by Leonard and Virginia Woolf. I'm reading the centennial copy with a commisioned essay by Mark Haddon.
A discussion thread will be posted at the end of the month.

I've been reading the tagged for #SheSaid August #buddyread I have to take it slowly as the content is enraging. Cleghorn writes about the treatment of women by medical men over the centuries, from wandering wombs to hysteria and everything in between.
Highly recommended.

AllDebooks On a whim, I picked up Bodies of Light, a 2014 novel by Sarah Moss. One of if the main characters undergoes training to be a Dr in Victorian London. A lot of the beliefs and practices shown in Claghorn's book are utilised in the plot, including Henry Maudsley's diabolical letter to Fortnightly Review. #SheSaid @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 2mo

Our 1st discussion thread for #VirginiaBloomsberries
🚢 Did you enjoy the writing style?
🍾 Did you engage with Rachel Vinrace's character? If not, why not?
🚢 How did opinions on marriage differ, depending on social status?
🍾 Do you think the title of the novel has a deeper meaning?
I hope you enjoyed our first read. I'm certainly excited to explore Woolf's writing even more now. 😊

Next read - Two Stories. All welcome to join

Librarybelle I‘m still reading, so I‘ll pop in when I‘m done! 2mo
Cuilin It‘s been a while since I read this and I‘ve just had a quick skim through. I loved most about this book, except probably the drawn out ending. I won‘t give too much away. I think the title can have many meanings. It‘s a voyage of discovery of oneself, a voyage out of our comfort zones. Also voyage out to the real world not the cocoon of childhood. 2mo
See All 12 Comments
AllDebooks @Cuilin this books contains so much. Woolf's writing needs to be savoured. I agree on your voyage interpretations. I thought it could also refer to life's voyage. 2mo
AllDebooks It took 9 years for Woolf to finish this novel as she was going through a depressive period and attempted suicide. I can see the reflection of this in her frustration at the role of women and the boredom experienced by the characters that permeates the story. 2mo
PurpleyPumpkin I‘m still reading my way through this book. So, I‘ll circle back when I‘m done. So far, I can say that I‘m enjoying the writing style although it did take me some time to get into it. 🤔 Rachel, so far at least, seems very naive, sheltered, and somewhat apathetic. But I like her curiosity and she does have some talents (piano playing). I‘m interested to see her develop. I‘ll wait to finish the book before answering the last 2 questions. 😉 2mo
AllDebooks @PurpleyPumpkin she had such a sheltered life with her 2 maiden aunts. She's in for an 👀 education with Helen. 😅 2mo
PurpleyPumpkin Ooh intriguing! 2mo
AnneCecilie I just finished the novel late last night. I‘m not sure how I feel about it. Rachel wasn‘t fully formed as a character for me. Apart from her piano skills I‘m not sure I know anything about her. But maybe that‘s how your “public” person was at the time or among this class of British people? I‘m not sure I would say a noticed any difference in the views on marriage. It seemed to be the ultimate goal, but I‘m surprised at how little the couple knew 2mo
AnneCecilie each other before they got engaged. What do they actually know about each other? When it comes to the title I think @Cuilin is on to something. But it was “nice” to be introduced to Mrs Dalloway since she gets her own book later on. I‘m not sure how I feel about the book overall, I think it need to sit we me. (edited) 2mo
AllDebooks @AnneCecilie there is certainly a lot to think about. I got very irritated when the Dalloways were talking about what a nuisance the suffragettes were. I took Rachel's character to be a representation of what a lady was expected to be, sitting pretty, with no opinion of her own. Basically, as an empty vessel to soak and display her husbands brilliance instead of her own. 2mo

#Naturalitsy
Discussion thread for our August #buddyread The Vaster Wilds. All are welcome.
🐾 The author states that this is a retelling of Robinson Crusoe? How does she achieve this?
🍁 The protagonist has no name. What is the significance of this plot device?
🐾 The Powhetan tribe opens the narrative to historical context, particularly on survival. How does the girl react to the attitudes of the townspeople as she forms her own opinions.

⬇️

AllDebooks Cont.
🍁 What conclusions did you draw from the ending?
🐾 Did reading this novel change your own relationship with nature? Are there similarities with the environmental issues we have today?
2mo
AllDebooks Please don't forget to add any books you want to recommend for the reading list for 2025. It would be very helpful to me if you keep it to the original post. Many thanks 😊 https://litsy.com/p/aURQbDdNdnI1 2mo

TEArificbooks I read this one earlier in the year and loved it. There is a man vs nature tale. I loved how determined the main character was to escape but also to survive even if it meant she was alone. 2mo
SamAnne I read this earlier too and really did love it‘s devastating and quiet approach to the story. 2mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I haven‘t read Crusoe, so I can‘t speak to its effectiveness as a retelling. The no name made the girl feel more alone and also like she could be any one of us facing the challenges of the wild. I enjoyed her “awakening” after she distanced herself from the townsfolk. She already had the seeds of understanding when she lived among them, but those seeds truly sprouted once she was on her own. It was a sad ending, but ⬇️ 2mo
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I can‘t imagine it ending any other way. It was a poignant look at how life and death aren‘t linear, but a cycle that we are all a part of. I‘ve always had a healthy respect for nature, so I don‘t know that it really changed my relationship. The girl went through a similar deprogramming that I‘ve gone through in my life. This book shows that the battle against nature is futile. Our best chance of mutual survival is working WITH nature. 2mo
AllDebooks @TEArificbooks 💚 her determination really shines through the story. 2mo
AllDebooks @SamAnne I think it's exemplary writing, certainly Groff's best yet, imo. 2mo
AllDebooks @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I think giving her no name really added to the atmosphere of the book, helping to demonstrate her isolation, both in the wild and in the community. I thought the girl saying out the 'names' she had been called and naming herself was a good way of showing her rejecting her previous life and developing autonomy and independence. 2mo
AllDebooks @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm yes, I 💯 agree on your points about her experience in the wild and nature. 2mo
Aimeesue Only halfway through, but I‘m loving the writing. And as I live in Virginia, I appreciate the escape from Jamestown. Archeologists found evidence of cannibalism among the residents there some years ago. Frightening thought, but Groff makes the dire situation very clear here. (edited) 2mo
AllDebooks @Aimeesue, oh, that is grim. 2mo
