#FierceFeb #PolyesterBride When I was looking for ideas for polyester brides or women who date or marry men 'beneath' them or not worthy of them, I found this quote by Nancy Astor--American socialite & the first female member of Parliament. Perfect. 😆👍 I have not read the tagged book about her.

Cinfhen Brilliant 🙌🏻💕😊 6y

#fiercefeb #polyesterbride

This prompt made me think of mid century brides and the difficulties of fitting with the concept of wife as a support rather than a complete individual. And more specifically of these journals of Sylvia Plath I read a few years ago and how she struggled as an artist and a wife and felt in her husbands shadow. They are fascinating reading. But even here she is not free, they are edited by her husband.

Centique Although he may have had very good motivation for what he edited and destroyed of hers - such as protecting their children - it‘s still very sad 😨 6y
CarolynM Have you read a The Silent Woman, Janet Malcolm's take on Sylvia and Ted? It's brilliant. 6y
Cinfhen Awesome pick! And your book sounds excellent @CarolynM 6y

batsy Great post ❤️ Her journals were so eye-opening and I read them for a class, and I was checking out so many books about her from the library I forget which edition it was. I really want to get the Unabridged Journals. @CarolynM I've been meaning to read that book! 6y
Centique @CarolynM I‘m just reading the blurb and it sounds wonderful. I may have read it and forgotten but I think not. Stacking it! 6y
Centique @batsy thanks 💕 and @cinfhen 😘 and I hear her unabridged letters are being published now too. 6y
Branwen I love Sylvia Platt so much! The unabridged journals are so amazing! 6y
Centique @Branwen hello there! I don‘t think Ive spoken to you since we chatted about Hemingway ages ago. Nice to see we share a love of Plath as well! 6y

#fiercefeb #polyesterbride I‘m not sure when I will actually read this book but I have seen the movie. I am pretty sure that in this version the costumes had a healthy dose of polyester. My favourite Doctor has a role in the movie. Guess who he plays?

theresidentromantic Did you like the movie? 6y
DivineDiana I haven‘t seen the movie yet, but the book was a fun, silly read for Austen fans! 6y
BeckyK I really disliked the movie, especially after reading the book! The books much better in my opinion and made me laugh! 6y

batsy Ha! Haven't read the book, assumed both book and movie would be atrocious, but was pleasantly surprised by the film! Quite enjoyed it... 6y
iread2much I actually liked the movie better than the book. The book was rather racist 6y
Cinfhen Mixed opinions but great fit for the prompt😜I haven‘t seen movie or read the book.... 6y
Dragon Thanks @DivineDiana @theresidentromantic @Beckykearns @batsy @iread2much @Cinfhen - I enjoyed watching the movie on the Movie channel but I wouldn‘t pay to see it again. I‘m more interested in reading the book now that I‘ve read conflicting opinions. Great comments 👍🐉😀 6y
theresidentromantic I didn't like either, I have to say, but I don't want to say why, I'd hate to bias you or anything! I hope it's a fun read for you.🤓 6y
Dragon Thanks @theresidentromantic I‘m definitely curious about the book now. I won‘t finish it if I don‘t like it. 😀🐉 6y

In this partial memoir, Bolick talks about the possibilities beyond the marriage-and-baby path, and explores if a woman can still be happy and build a rich life alone. Definitely not #polyesterbride material.

Kalalalatja Stacked! 6y
batsy Love the title and had high hopes but this one let me down, sadly... 6y
Cinfhen That's a shame @batsy looks good! 6y

batsy Something about her tone didn't sit well with me, @Cinfhen but lots of others have enjoyed it 👍🏽 6y
batsy I sent you a package last Monday the 12th via Poslaju, was wondering if it has arrived? (this kind of ruins the surprise 🙃) 6y
erzascarletbookgasm The book sounds good, what a shame @batsy . And no, I haven‘t received it. The delay must be due to the long holiday break..but that‘s four days! 👎Poslaju! 6y
batsy I just traced the number and it says delivery was "attempted" on the 14th and delivery notice left behind. Did you get it? It's now being held at the SS13/1 Subang branch, apparently for 7 days from the 14th ? I've been calling 1300300300 for twenty minutes now and no one's available to take my call. Ugh. The tracking number is EP459003144MY 6y
erzascarletbookgasm @batsy no worries, with the tracking number, I‘ll collect it from the post office. But I doubt their ‘attempt‘ to deliver because I didn‘t get any notice! Anyway, thank you, I‘m now excited to collect it! 6y
batsy Oh cool, I'm glad to hear that ❤️ On behalf of Pos Malaysia, I'm sorry for the trouble ? I absolutely don't trust their "attempts" either... 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Nothing to be sorry about @batsy ! It‘s lovely of you to send me something. If you have not reached out to me, the item would have been returned to you after the 7 days. 😤 6y

Saint Mazie: A Novel | Jami Attenberg

Based upon a real woman & utilizing the oral history format, Attenberg's novel chronicles an era through the viewpoint of the witty, jaded, charitable & fiercely independent Mazie. Nothing could be farther from her mind than dreams of being a #PolyesterBride

#polyesterbride I just couldn‘t help myself.I saw John Waters last week and when I saw this prompt, thought immediately of the incomparable Divine! Talk about #fiercefeb !

batsy 🙌🏽🙌🏽 6y
Cinfhen HellsYeah 💗 6y
RealBooks4ever My daughter went to see John Waters on Feb 14! She‘s a big fan but was a little disappointed that he used some of the same material he used last time he came through Portland. What did you think of his show? 6y
See All 9 Comments
Leftcoastzen I liked it a lot . I had seen him many years ago at a Book event , fun to hear him riff on the history. 6y
DivineDiana As I‘m Baltimore born and bred, I have a soft spot in my heart for John Waters. Have not had the pleasure of hearing a prepared lecture, but I did exchange some comments with him at a Baltimore nightclub a long time ago! 6y
Leftcoastzen @DivineDiana I love Baltimore! The American Visionary Art Museum, Babe Ruth Museum, the main branch of The Enoch Pratt Free Library, H.L. Mencken, yummy 🦀......Love the quote Mencken‘s about one day the White House will be adorned by a downright moron. 6y
DivineDiana @Leftcoastzen Yes! Yes! And Yes! You certainly have seen the sites! And don‘t forget the Edgar Allen Poe House! 🙂 6y
Leftcoastzen @DivineDiana Poe house on the list.I think it was closed on the day I wanted to go or I just ran out of time.A good reason to come back sometime. 6y

The Butcher's Hook | Janet Ellis
post image

Anne Jacobs doesn‘t have any wish to be a #polyesterbride. She wants to go her own way, and marry for “love” and not status and money. However, being a woman in Victorian England makes that harder than she would like it to be. And from there things take a dark turn

#FierceFeb

batsy Great description, I'm "hooked" and would stack it again if I could ?? 6y
Redwritinghood I‘m planning to start this one today! 6y
Cinfhen Just loaned this to a friend today, since I couldn't get into it!!! 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Sounds good, stacking. And pretty photo:) 6y
Kalalalatja @batsy ha! Love the word play 👏😂 @Redwritinghood hope you like it! 🤞 @Cinfhen that‘s kind of you, maybe your friend will have better luck! And maybe it just wasn‘t the right time for you to read it? @erzascarletbookgasm thank you! ☺️ I really hope you like it, but prepare for weird! 6y

#FierceFeb Day 19: I had to google what #PolyesterBride means - and this book seems tailor-fit for today‘s photo prompt.

Cinfhen Great choice 💚 6y
batsy Oh, that's cool! I've seen this book come up a lot here 😊 6y
BookishMe @batsy I found it gripping. Certainly kicked me out of a tiny reading slump last year 😉 😉 6y

batsy @BookishMe Oh that's good to know! I like slump-kicking gripping books :) But for some reason I keep confusing it with this book, which hasn't come out yet 😅 (and also sounds good) 6y
BookishMe I find the latter's title a rip off from TJR's book ;p 6y
GatheringBooks @batsy and @BookishMe I am super intrigued by this novel. hope it finds me soon. :) 6y
BookishMe @GatheringBooks it found me indeed... I had forgotten I had put it on hold with Overdrive. It became available when I least expected it. Same thing happened with When Breath Becomes Air, but of course they are two very different books! 6y
