This is an excellent memoir by an author whose work I love on CBC radio: Jesse Wente shares his story as an Indigenous man growing up in Toronto with mixed racial and economic backgrounds, and his ongoing work in advocacy for Indigenous justice through his career as a film critic and broadcaster. Excellent insight into racism, diversity of Indigenous culture, and the legacy of residential schools.

My book club chose this without knowing Hough‘s book-review-related controversies. We still appreciated her writing style, despite its angry, dark edge. And there‘s plenty to discuss here—from a cult childhood and its after effects to misogynistic bosses and how people become unhoused. Def better than 3/5 but not quite 4/5.

I‘m a holiday reading #rebel. Reading schmaltzy books doesn‘t do it for me. But this little horror novella gave me the holiday vibes along with plenty of weird and creepy elements. Also includes some commentary on the 1980s greed culture and publishing in general.

Perfect palate cleanser!!

Just bought the trilogy to this series, Rebel Of The Sands, so excited to get them, the covers are so pretty and they sound really cool!
