The Sabbath | Abraham Joshua Heschel

I am not the most observant Jew by any means, but I have decided to incorporate more Jewish practice into my life. I‘m starting with taking time for Jewish books. I have started setting aside Friday nights and Saturday for these books. This one isn‘t long and could easily be read in one day, but I am going to read one chapter a week.

4 ⭐ This is not a story I have ever heard before and I loved it. It's about a jewish cobbler who is always happy and hard working, and plans for shabbat every week. There is also the rich man who hoards his treasure and lives like a mizer. This story was wonderful and the illustrator did an amazing job. The illustrations are full of color and bring a smile to the reader's face.

The concepts on the architecture of time are amazing. This book may very well be life changing for me.

Kind of looks like Dr. Now from “My 600 Pound Life”, doesn‘t it?!? Who knew he was an avid reader?!?

As a Christian, I was so interested to read a Jewish perspective on the Sabbath—I really value the length of tradition & practice the author brings to the subject. There are some beautiful reflective passages, but also lots of lofty musings on time & space + discussions of ancient rabbis‘ views, which were a bit tedious to me. I wanted something a little more down-to-earth, more descriptive of Sabbath tradition & practice. Still worth the read!

MayJasper I here you. That's what I would have wanted from this book too. I love the cover #coversublime 4y
BarbaraJean @MayJasper It really is a gorgeous cover! The cover image is one of a series of woodcuts, which are used at the beginning of each chapter. It‘s a beautiful little book. (edited) 4y

Starting these two today... the tagged is for my Education for Ministry group, and The New Jim Crow is for a Black Lives Matter book group with friends at church. Having grown up in the Christian tradition, I‘m so interested to read about the Sabbath from a Jewish perspective. And even though I anticipate it will be difficult/frustrating to explore the topic, I‘m looking forward to learning from The New Jim Crow and our discussion in a few weeks.
