#BookReport - Absolutely lovely, relaxing week with my husband off. We've puttered, gotten the porch set for summer, done a bunch of gardening, had a canoe adventure (my phone is now at the bottom of a river 😂), helped Grandpa with some projects, played video games, and of course done some reading. And the weather has been PERFECT!! Down to the long weekend now, so sad to see vacation ending!!!

@Cinfhen

Cinfhen So glad you had a wonderful week with your bestie (aka - hubby) sorry about the phone 📱🤪 3d
AshleyHoss820 The phone! Oh no! I haven‘t been on a canoe in forever, but tubing and tanking down the river we‘ve lost so much stuff! 😂 It sounds like you‘re off to a fantastic summer!! ☺️ 3d
Bookzombie It sounds like a wonderful week, even with the loss of phone. I hope your weekend is great too. 🙂 3d
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen @AshleyHoss820 @Bookzombie - My own fault for not putting the phone back in its own specific, secure location 😂 But otherwise we have had a fabulous week, so I'll just have to chalk this up to a lesson learned!! Thankfully the phone was towards the end of its lifespan anyway! 2d

#WeeklyForecast - my husband is off this week for a staycation so I will either get tons of reading done OR we will be running around adventuring. I let him take point during his time off because he doesn't get a lot of it!! This is our first vacation at home since we bought this house in 2014 that we haven't had a gigantic remodel project hanging over us, so that part is awesome!! We get to actually - this is crazy - ENJOY the house we've been⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) working on all these years!!! 😂 Should be a chill week. I started the tagged book last night. I also need to read Old Herbaceous and The Secret of Happiness this week, as well the Anne Hillerman book as it is due back at the library. This is the first Leaphorn and Chee book written by Tony's daughter so I'm a little nervous about where the series is going to go!! I'm about 1000 pages behind my average for the month, so we will see ⬇ 1w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) how much ground I make up this week. I'm also playing a lot of Horizon Forbidden West right now and since that game has about seven million side quests, it's taking some time! 😂 All in all just really stoked about a chill week with my favorite person. ❤

#BookReport - Still slow going (for me) - I've been in a sort of mini-slump for a while. Still reading, but definitely not at my usual pace. Still, I finished two books for the #BacklistReadathon and should finish the third today, which was my goal, so that's something!! 😁 I can't believe I'm already putting together my June TBR! This book was a surprise win!! I absolutely hated North and South when we read it last year, so my expectations for Cranford were extremely low. But I ended up loving this one!! Delightful small-town shenanigans, a likable (if somewhat distant) narrator, and a pile of elderly ladies that made me laugh far more than I expected, yet also moments that genuinely had me choked up. I will definitely be rereading this one in the future.

TheAromaofBooks Thank you SO MUCH for hosting the #HashtagBrigade @BarkingMadRead !!! My enjoyment in reading this one was definitely amplified by the buddy read, daily discussions, and snarky hashtags!! Already looking forward to next month!! 2w

Isn't it annoying when the last 40 pages aggravate you so much that it brings down your overall feeling for the book?? This was a 4* read for me until the final misunderstanding, which left it as a borderline so-so. The main story employs a marriage of convenience, which is pretty much my favorite trope. Tessa and Leo are both likable characters, although I would have liked more from the supposed decades-long feud between their families. In the⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) end, there's a misunderstanding that Tessa blows WAY out of proportion, accusing Leo of some pretty terrible things. This would have made sense at the beginning, but now they've been living/working/talking together for months, so for her to still act like he would do this stuff felt really unreasonable. There's a big fight and they both say mean stuff, yet for some reason it's all Leo's fault. We get the absolutely infuriating ⬇ 2w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) “she doesn't want to talk to you because you were sooooo mean“ when Leo wants to apologize the next day (despite it honestly NOT EVEN BEING HIS FAULT), and of course HE has to make a grand gesture because Tessa “deserves“ someone who will “treat her like a princess!!“ No, Leo, YOU deserve someone who doesn't flounce off to pout for days instead of having an adult conversation. 🙄 So yeah, despite actually enjoying this book for the ⬇ 2w

Pickpick

This book was quite the ride. In the near future, the discovery has been made that everyone has a specific gene that is matched between only two people in the world: those people are Matches, genetically predetermined to be a perfect couple. Match Your DNA is now a huge business, with people sending in a DNA swab to find out if their match is in the database. The book follows five different people who have just found their Matches. I was afraid⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) this would make the book hard to follow, but instead the short, snappy chapters rotating through characters kept me turning the pages when I should have been doing something more productive with my day! 😂 Marrs does a great job exploring a lot of the ethics surrounding this concept without becoming polemic. It's a thought-provoking read. I didn't quite agree with all the story-telling choices, and some of the scenarios felt a little ⬇ 2w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) too ridiculous for me to give it a full 5*, but this was a solid 4* read and the first book I've picked up in a while that kept me completely engaged the entire time.

@Clwojick this is my first book for #AlphabeticalBingo - I've created an overly-complicated system to go with your challenge, of course 😂

Gissy This one has been in my tbr forever! I need to read it. Sometimes I give a book 5⭐️ because there is no 4.5 in GoodRead and because I enjoyed it so much. But in reality, there are only few books that deserve 5 ⭐️Sometimes I feel generous with books😌 2w
TheAromaofBooks @Gissy - I tend to go the other way - I get stingy with stars!! 😂 2w
Gissy @TheAromaofBooks But you are correct, many books are 3⭐️ Not much 4 and only few deserve 5⭐️ 2w

So I am going to try to participate in the #14books14weeks2023 challenge hosted by @TheHeartlandBookFairy !! The 14 weeks start the week of Memorial Day and go through til Labor Day. For my books I have chosen 14 books I was SO EXCITED about when they arrived, but somehow have never actually READ. As you can see, several BOTM and OwlCrate editions lurk here!! Since taking the photo I rearranged the shelf into alphabetical order, which is how I ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I am planning to tackle them!! My reading has been SO slow lately, but maybe some happy new books will get me all inspired!!

@LitsyEvents have you seen this challenge? Here's the link to the original post for this summer reading challenge!! https://www.litsy.com/web/post/2582474

monalyisha What a good way to choose your books! There are so many on my shelf that I feel the same way about (could not WAIT to get my hands on them and then never cracked them open). I‘ve thought about participating in this but part of my reading joy is the freedom that comes from choosing a book in the moment — & I don‘t want to plan my summer so strictly. But it‘s a very cool challenge! 3w
krysreads Good on you to plan your 14 reads ahead haha I always can't decide what to read next.😓 3w

What. Even. How can it already be time for May's #BacklistReadathon !?!? Absolute madness! As usual, we're taking the third week of the month to focus on an author whose backlist you've been meaning to read. I am on the struggle bus with time lately!! Not sure why things feels way busier the last couple of weeks. Partially it's the good weather - lots of outside stuff starting to happen. I just haven't been reading as much lately. So I was actually a little excited to take a car in for a tire rotation/balance because it meant some uninterrupted, guilt-free reading time!!! Unfortunately, I ended up really disliking this one but I was trapped with no⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) other books!! 😂 In the end, this turned into kind of a hate-read for me, and I ranted about it AT LENGTH on GR. But the short version? I first off hated the way this book was a constant, incessant reiteration of how all men suck, all men are predators, all men are gaslighters, all men are manipulators, no man can be trusted, no man actually works (because he just gets stuff automatically because he's a man), on and on and on and on. ⬇ 3w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I could have gotten behind the premise of a woman conning unsavory men in a Robin Hood style if those stories had been balanced by literally even a SINGLE good male characters, but there were NONE. All men suck, and every woman is either a victim or one who has figured out how to manipulate the men in her life to get what she “deserves“ because the system is SO RIGGED that there is no POSSIBLE way for a woman to get ahead honestly. ⬇ 3w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Combined with what I found to be genuine plot holes (oh, I've known you two weeks, and you think I should give you $300k to “hold“ for me and then give back after my nasty divorce so my ex can't get it? What a great idea, I'll write the checks!!), I just was so aggravated the whole time I was reading this. Plus, there's the part where I feel like the blurb really misrepresents the story anyway because the reason Kat blames Meg for ⬇ 3w
See All 8 Comments
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) ruining her life... literally makes no sense. In what world is this Meg's fault?!?! When I finally found out what Meg “did“ I genuinely couldn't believe that this was the source of all Kat's angst. (Like, the event itself was obviously traumatic, but blaming Meg was nonsensical.)

Moral of the story: Always bring TWO books when you get your tires rotated!!
3w
marleed Oh this is on my physical TBR and thinking I might get to it with prioritizing October mystery/thrillers later this year. Maybe not! I feel your review. When I read a book I‘m not liking, it‘s faults just start piling up and up. I actually think it helps me to read through a disliked book once in a while. It helps confirm my reading tastes. 3w
PuddleJumper I always have a book to go on my phone as well as a physical book just in case. Too many times I've been trapped and finished a book 🤣 I've been struggling to read this month, I'm very restless and don't want to sit still 3w
5feet.of.fury I did enjoy this book for the fleeting moment I read it, barely remember anything about it at this point bc it was not that memorable, but I remember that Kat blaming Meg was BS. It was preposterous. 3w

Chapters 1-8:
Hey friends!! I was supposed to post this Monday, and it's only Wednesday, so that's pretty good 😂 How are you enjoying the book so far? I think I may have read this one back in high school, and remember the basic premise, but none of the details. For instance, I had completely forgotten that Edward doesn't WANT to go out and explore London - that happens accidentally! I feel bad for Tom, who really is trying to explain, but I am⬇

Okay, I just want to clarify that I genuinely draw these AT RANDOM, so I was losing it when I ended up with three free spaces in a column!! AND BookSpin and DoubleSpin and a Free Space all in another column!! I think we have some good opportunities this month, friends!!!! 😁 ⬇ ⬇ ⬇

TheAromaofBooks Here's the #BookSpinBingo card! First, I put our official numbers (5 & 12) back in the mix. Then I drew them all out & wrote them down as I went, meaning the official numbers are just mixed into the card with the rest! As you can see, 21-25 are both labeled with their numbers & also as free spaces, so you can use them to match however you wrote your list. To score a bingo, just read books (in any order) that are in any row or column!! MORE INFO ⬇ (edited) 1mo
TheAromaofBooks 1 - I don't tag anyone on this post except for @LitsyEvents but anyone is welcome to play along!!
2 - Remember – NO PRESSURE!!!! If this starts to stress you out, just take that page right out of your journal and pretend it never existed!! This challenge is to encourage you to read, not to make you feel like reading is a chore!!!
3 - FREE SPACES can be filled with any book that is NOT already on your list!! ⬇
1mo
TheAromaofBooks 4 & final - As a reminder, only the “official” BookSpin/DoubleSpin numbers will count towards giveaway entries. I don‘t want the giveaway to be stacked against people who aren‘t able to read lots of books each month. So basically there is still a maximum of 2 entries possible per month no matter how many books you read from your list. This bingo card is just for fun & glory! 😁

Thanks for playing & happy reading!!!

Sorry for the posting binge this morning!!! This weekend was just tooooo crazy for much Litsy-ing. Question 4/final: What were your overall thoughts on this story? Did you enjoy it? Did you connect to Pi? I read this one because it's frequently listed on “modern classics“ lists - do you think it deserves that title? Any other scenes or thoughts or shout-outs?

Thank you all for reading along with me!! I'm looking forward to hearing what all of you thought about this one overall!!

@willaful @peanutnine @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @Bookwormjillk

Bookwormjillk This was a re-read for me, and I still liked it. How modern are we talking? Off to google modern classics. 1mo
willaful I enjoyed it very much, except for the more viscerally gory parts. And I couldn't follow all the technical details about where he was on the boat and how that worked, but I didn't care much.

One question I had -- he thinks the men threw him over intending to kill him. I didn't get that sense at all, given they put a life jacket on him. I think they were doing their best in terrifying circumstances. Anyone else?
1mo
willaful The ending really worked for me, I thought it was extremely clever. The story will make you believe in God... because it makes you *want* to believe in God. I may have just had a religious awakening. 😄 1mo
See All 8 Comments
Daisey @willaful I wasn‘t really sure I believed this when it happened, and in the light of the second story, I do not at all think they were trying to harm him. 1mo
Daisey I really enjoyed this story and the ending added a whole new level of things to think about. Even the more violent parts seemed an appropriate fit for the overall story. 1mo
peanutnine I really loved it. This was a reread for me but it had been so long I couldn't remember the details of the twist ending so it didn't influence my reading. @willaful I found it interesting that when his suffering was the worst he had the most faith in God. This aspect of religion always baffles me if I'm being honest 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk @willaful @Daisey @peanutnine - It was a reread for me, but I had forgotten basically everything since I read this twenty years ago! While it was more violent than I recalled, I didn't feel like it was overdone; everything felt realistic to the situation, sadly. I am very religious myself, and I didn't quite agree with a lot of the religious conclusions in this story, but I appreciate Pi's desire to grow, learn, and trust. 4w
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - The term “modern classic“ is pretty loose, especially since the term “classic“ itself doesn't have a particularly strict definition haha But most seem to think that it includes books 20-50 years old that people think will still be being read a hundred years from now... or something like that 😂 4w

Question 3: Finally, Pi washes up on a beach. However, his story sounds completely unbelievable. In response to the skepticism, Pi gives another account, which involves humans, not animals. What did you think of this version? Did it change how you felt about Pi? Did it make his story seem more or less horrific?

@willaful @peanutnine @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @Bookwormjillk

Bookwormjillk More horrific but less random I think. 1mo
willaful More horrific to me, because it involves seeing the death of his mother, where in the first story he could have dreams his family was somehow okay.

I don't think it changed my feelings about him. He was a survivor in both stories, doing whatever he had to do.
1mo
Daisey The second story seems more horrific but also more believable. It doesn‘t change my opinion of Pi, but I do consider it an interesting way to deal with the trauma. 1mo
See All 7 Comments
peanutnine I agree with all the above sentiments. It makes more sense but is definitely more horrific. I think it makes me admire Pi's endurance even more. He had to find a way to mentally sort through the trauma he suffered 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk @willaful @Daisey @peanutnine - I did think it was, sadly, a more believable story. I thought it was interesting that the men interviewing him decided to accept the animal version after all. Side question: Do you agree with their conclusion that Pi himself is the tiger? Or do you think the tiger represented something or someone else? I wonder if it was the parts of Pi that he wanted to not be - the parts that did whatever it took ⬇ 4w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) to survive? 4w
peanutnine @TheAromaofBooks I think it was the parts of himself that he wanted to disassociate from, assigning blame for some of his more gruesome acts to a wild animal seems more acceptable and he can be more forgiving towards it 4w

Question 2: A large part of this section is spent on a floating island made of meat-eating algae. Was this entire episode fabricated? Do you think it's possibly something that exists? Did you find this section harder to believe than other parts of Pi's adventures? Would you have left the island or stayed? Do you like that my “question“ is actually an entire bombardment of them? 😂

@willaful @peanutnine @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @Bookwormjillk

Bookwormjillk To be honest I didn‘t get this part at all. The rest of it sort of did, but I was very huh? about this. Maybe someone else can explain it to me. 1mo
willaful This is definitely where the story got truly “huh“? for me.

Symbolically, if we accept the second story, this could be another psychological way of leaving his new self behind. The meat-eating seems pointed. 😄 But I don't like that all my theories are based on the second story. I want the story with the animals!
(edited) 1mo
Daisey I have no idea! In the first reading I was entertained and baffled, but I took it in stride along with the fantasy of living on a boat with a tiger. In light of the second story, I‘m just baffled. If he did kill and eat another man, which let him regain strength, is this all a strange way to deal with his cannibalism? Seeing as with his religious beliefs and previous vegetarianism, it would be even more traumatic than for meat eating humans. 1mo
See All 7 Comments
peanutnine Yes this part was definitely the most fantastical. I agree @willaful I want to believe in the animals! But it does seem like it could be another way for him to process his cannibalism. He needed a story to explain how he gained back his strength partway through his journey. The island addressed this as well as maybe some of his grief towards eating animals in general through the acid pools as @Daisey said switching from vegetarianism would be huge 1mo
willaful Yes, especially when it was religion based, and also with all he knew about animals from his father. @peanutnine @Daisey 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk @willaful @Daisey @peanutnine - I can definitely see this as a way of “facing up“ to the fact that he ate a human. At first he justifies it (initial regaining of strength), but then he recognizes it as evil? I'm just not sure. I've never been good at allegories 😂 4w
Bookwormjillk @TheAromaofBooks oh! That does make sense. 4w

Whew, this week's section was a ROLLERCOASTER! Where to even start?? Here we have the bizarre episode where Pi goes blind, meets another blind person, and then regains his sight; the entire crazy story of the floating carnivorous algae island; and of course the big reveal at the end that turns everything on its head. I would love to hear what stuck out with all of you about these adventures, so I am going to post four discussion questions!! ⬇

TheAromaofBooks Question 1: So what about this entire weird thing about going blind and then meeting up with someone else who was also blind? Was the entire thing a hallucination? Do you think he actually did come across someone else? With the hindsight knowledge we have from the ending, that Pi may have made up the entire story, does the blind episode make more or less sense??

@willaful @peanutnine @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @Bookwormjillk
1mo
willaful Could it be a religious allegory of some kind? I was thinking hallucination. Though at first he thinks he's talking to Richard Parker, which is interesting in light of the possible revelation.

Could it be a way of psychologically mourning and disposing of the part of him that was Richard Parker, if we assume the second story is the truth? Embracing, but then realizing it's time to let it go and become gentle again.
1mo
Daisey This part seemed so crazy to me as it happened. I accepted the blindness as a result of starvation, but then to meet someone else in the same state seemed completely unbelievable. In reading it as the second story, it made more sense to me and the blindness could represent his own denial of killing another person. 1mo
See All 7 Comments
peanutnine @Daisey I definitely agree it makes more sense within the second story, with the blindness as his way of separating himself even further from the killing - not only imagining it was the tiger who did it but also having no way to prevent or stop it 1mo
TheAromaofBooks @Daisey @willaful @peanutnine - I felt that when he initially went blind and was hearing Richard Parker talk to him, that it made sense within the context of starvation. But then to run into someone else who was blind was actually the first point in the story that I didn't believe that Pi was telling the truth! Even with the 2nd version, I was confused because killing the blind sailor doesn't fit in the with the timeline of killing the hyena/bad ⬇ 4w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) guy. But it does seem like this guy has to be allegorical as the odds of two lifeboats finding each other are just too far-fetched haha 4w
peanutnine @TheAromaofBooks the whole timeline confused me, especially trying to match up the two stories. But he did say towards the beginning that he couldn't remember the order of events after the first couple weeks and he just remembered overall experiences so it makes sense that he would add embellished allegorical events throughout whenever he was processing things, regardless of when they actually happened 4w

Totally spaced on posting our discussion post yesterday!!!

Any thoughts on this week's chapters? We definitely upped the action game! Things got a little more gruesome than I was anticipating as well!

I couldn't believe how long it took Pi to look for food and water! If you were in his position, would you prefer to take your chances with the makeshift raft or with the tiger??

willaful I found him not noticing his thirst for three day rather implausible, but given the intense fear and emotional upsets, I guess it could be so.

It was definitely too gory for me! I had to skim. I'm really quite surprised by the book; I was anticipating something more surreal, I guess? Less “tooth and claw“ and prosaic survival. More like what's implied by the cover. Not that I'm criticizing, I'm just surprised.
1mo
TheAromaofBooks @willaful - I was surprised by the intensity as well, especially the scene with the hyena and the zebra 😬 I didn't feel like it was over-the-top within the context, but, like you, I wasn't necessarily expecting it! 1mo
Daisey @TheAromaofBooks @willaful Busy this week, and this is my first chance to look for the discussion again. I completely understand what you all are saying. The intensity makes sense, but it definitely wasn‘t really what I was expecting, although I‘m also not quite sure what I was expecting. I did also think the not looking for food, water, or cover was a bit unrealistic, but I also sunburn in minutes. 1mo
peanutnine I got behind on reading but I'm quickly catching up! I thought his delayed reaction to looking for food and water was understandable. He was probably running on pure adrenaline and fear trying to avoid the animals. And he was expecting rescue for a while. As for the raft vs tiger, I think I'd rather take my chances on the boat. But I don't like open water, as I am a terrible swimmer 😅 1mo

Pretty typical clean Regency romance fare. The main character is trying to escape an unwanted marriage, etc. A soft pick - perfectly pleasant, but I didn't love it, and found some of the scenarios to be rather contrived. However, I did like the characters so I will be picking up the second book.

Do you ever have a book that you think is super pretty so you put it off because you are afraid the story won't be as good as the cover?? This one has been on my shelf for a year and I think it's so gorgeous!! But it has been a #TrappedonanIsland pick for multiple months, including this one, so I decided to finally take the plunge. While it wasn't the best fantasy I have ever read, I did enjoy it. I liked the narrator & while the world-building⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) was sometimes uneven, it was still very engaging. Sometimes I read a standalone fantasy and wish it had been stretched into more than one book, and this was one of those times. I still had a lot of questions about the history of the hotel and development of the villain. I would even love a sequel about what is happening with all these characters now! A solid, engaging read, but not one that blew me away. Still... I think I'll keep it!! 1mo

So technically we have read through Chapter 37, but since that chapter starts Part 2, I don't have as much to say about it (other than wow! Talk about leaping into the action section! 😂) I didn't find this week's reading quite as engaging. willaful I agree with your points. It was really something to be just thrown into the situation after all that build up! Though it looks like the next chapter is more backstory.

I was also kind of bored with the religious sections. Which could mean the rest of the book will be dull, but we'll see.

Well, I got this one for a quarter in 2003, so it only took me 20 years to get around to read this 178pg MG book 😂 It was good fun but not amazing. Three kids are playing on a raft when it breaks free from its moorings and goes out with the tide, stranding them on a small, rocky island. All of that, and their survival stuff, was great fun. However for some reason the island is sinking (never explained). The kids mark the water line to see if ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) it's just the tide and we're told “the water didn't move“... but shouldn't the tide be coming in and out regardless?? And then they find an entire huge pile of gold, but we never find out who put it there or why! So basically it's a fun story, but it also felt like the author was just trying to make it dramatic and exciting rather than remotely believable - but sometimes that's fun, too. A soft pick. 2mo

dabbe Interesting to note: for the 1958 tetralogy, White added two chapters that are not in the original version: one where Wart becomes an ant, and one where he becomes a goose. He learns MAJOR lessons about each culture and their form of government. He also took out the battle between Merlyn and Madam Mim (which is in the Disney movie). The 1958 version of all 4 books is darker than the originals. 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @dabbe - That is so interesting! I actually tried to find these books as individuals instead of in the bound volume, but they are no longer common. I wondered if anything had been changed from their original printing. Can't believe they got rid of the battle with Madam Mim! That was one of my favorite scenes from the movie. 2mo
dabbe The individual ones are worth some money, too. In the original SWORD IN THE STONE, all of the drawings were done by T.H. White himself! Check and see if your edition has the ant and geese sections. If not, I can give them to you in a pdf format. I'm afraid the individuals are different from the 1958 tetralogy. For example, here's what is different in Book 2 (thanks Wikipedia!): ⬇️ (edited) 2mo
dabbe The Queen of Air and Darkness is a substantially different book from The Witch in the Wood, and less than half its length. The general outline is similar, but the tone is darker and more violent and many of the details are different. (edited) 2mo
BkClubCare Gosh! I am clueless about all of this and haven‘t seen the movie. Thanks Everyone! I was in an antique store today - wish I had a thought to 👀 look for these titles on the shelf of old books… 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @dabbe - Yes, my edition has the ant and geese chapters. Its intriguing to me that those weren't included in the original story, and that the second book was changed so much 20 years after the original publication. It would be fun to find that book and compare the two. 2mo
AvidReader25 I was expecting Sir Ector and Kay to be bullies too! I thought the scene where Kay claims to have pulled the sword out himself was really powerful. His father was so patient and gentle as he asked his son if that was the truth. 2mo
AvidReader25 @dabbe my copy definitely didn‘t have those sections. I would love the PDFs if you have them! 2mo
rubyslippersreads My book has the ant and geese chapters, but when I started watching the movie last night, I thought Madame Mim was a Disney creation. Now I want to read the 1938 version, which is the one Disney bought the rights to. 2mo

Pickpick

While this book is just as fun and engaging as the rest of the series, the final conflict/resolution annoys the bejeebers out of me and makes it my least favorite of the quartet. I just get very aggravated that the whole thing is blamed on poor Jack who has had a horrific day at work and has a throbbing headache and comes home to have Emma immediately get hurt feelings about something she's never discussed and then she just goes off on him and ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) storms out and then refuses to let Jack talk to her for days because she has to “sort through his betrayal“ blah blah blah. It's stupid and annoying and makes me so annoyed that I actually tend to skip the last 40 pages or so of this book every time I read it 😂 It's ironic because the rest of the book is just as fun and humorous as the rest of the series, with such likable and engaging characters. I actually think Jack and Emma are ⬇ 2mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) great together, but that whole scenario where somehow it's all Jack's fault for not magically reading Emma's mind (pro tip: if your SO asks you how you feel about your relationship and you keep reassuring them that it's fine when it's not actually fine, it's not really your SO's fault if you're unhappy!) really gets on my nerves. Still a pick, but not as hearty of one as the rest of the series. 2mo

Litsy Hey. I just posted on the Litsy account, “Just wanted Littens to know that we heard about and fixed a bug with signing into Litsy via the web. The bug lasted from yesterday afternoon until just now, and also affected some other user-related functions, like viewing user pages on the web. The apps were unaffected. Best, Tim“ 2mo
Litsy It was a small typo in code made necessary by migrating versions of some underlying software. In the land of coding one $ is different from two $s—but they look pretty similar all the same! :) 2mo

Pickpick

I am not usually a mood reader. I just pick up the next book on the windowsill and go! 😂 But every once in a while every book on that windowsill looks stupid, and when that happens I pick up an old favorite instead. This week, my mood was for one of my all-time favorite romance series, the Bridal Quarter by Nora Roberts, which starts with this book. I love these! Four life-long friends who run a successful wedding venue together, each of them ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) in charge of a different facet of the business. Mac is the photographer, and the first book focuses on her as she (reluctantly) falls in love with Carter, a high school English/lit teacher. I love all the characters in these books so much. While the love stories are obviously the focus, the close friendship between them women is really the driving force behind these stories. There is plenty of humor, but nothing feels campy or ⬇ 2mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) ridiculous. This is probably my fifth or sixth time reading through this series - huge comfort reads for me that I love more every time I read them.

I'm emotionally devastated by the closure of Book Depository! I absolutely love being able to buy the British editions of certain books. Does anyone have a suggestion of where I should purchase those now? I really wish they would have just started charging for shipping instead of closing entirely. 😕

Soubhiville Oh no, I hadn‘t heard! That‘s too bad. I often bought gifts for other Litsy folks through them. 😞 2mo
Itchyfeetreader I hadn‘t realised it was an Amazon company. 2mo

ReadingRachael I hated to hear this too! 😕 2mo
RaeLovesToRead Waterstones does international delivery. Postage is quite pricey, but you can get some beautiful exclusive editions. 2mo
JamieArc I‘m also a bit devastated at this. Not only do I often prefer UK covers, but especially during the Booker prize, I like ordering books that haven‘t been released in the US yet. @Ruthiella recommended Blackwell‘s, and she may have even said free shipping. 2mo
Ruthiella @JamieArc Free shipping (or rather it‘s included in the price) to the US. Pricewise I find Blackwell‘s as good a the Book Depository and their shipping times to California are great. I don‘t know about other countries. Possibly no free shipping in that case. (edited) 2mo
mjtwo Oh no - we have few options for buying hardcover books in Australia so often end up using Book Depository. US stores charge outrageous shipping fees. 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @Soubhiville @Itchyfeetreader @Gissy @KarenUK @ReadingRachael @RaeLovesToRead @JamieArc @Ruthiella @mjtwo - Thank you for the tips!! I've purchased from Waterstone's before but they do charge a lot for shipping. Blackwell's looks much more reasonable, so hopefully I will be able to get my British-edition fix from them!! 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @Soubhiville - Book Depository closing is definitely going to impact my BookSpin giveaway as well - that was how I was able to keep the giveaway international. I'm going to have to explore other options for that as well! 2mo

Mr. Ape | Dick King-Smith
post image
Mehso-so

King-Smith wrote some odd little books, and this is one of them. It starts out engagingly, with a rich elderly man living in a giant house by himself and spontaneously deciding to get some pets since he was never "allowed" to have them by his overbearing wife. What better place to put them than in his house? So chickens in the living room and bunnies in the dining room, etc. I could see this part really appealing to younger readers. But then ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the story gets a little muddled. He's hired a single dad who, along with his son, lives in a caravan because they are gypsies (their wagon is pulled by a horse, so I honestly have no idea when this book is supposed to be set), but many of the people in the town are prejudiced against them. In the end, the father and son decide to move on because so many people in town are treating them poorly - and Mr. Ape buys his own caravan and ⬇ 2mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) travels with them! The pacing was just really odd, and while King-Smith makes it obvious that the father and son are actually really good, kind people, no one other than Mr. Ape ever realizes that, and it felt a bit sad that they were just forced to move on. I was hoping that Mr. Ape's acceptance of them would help the townspeople see that they were wrong, but apparently not. It was also weird because we spend a bunch of the book with ⬇ 2mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) him collecting pets, then he gives almost all of them away! It wasn't a bad story, just rather disjointed, as though he couldn't decide exactly what story he wanted to write.

I found this one to be quite engaging, partially because I actually liked Hal, which is more than I can say about other Ware MCs that I have read haha Not a lot actually happens here and it seemed like I should be bored, but instead I really did want to find out how Hal was connected to this family. Not a book I will read again, but a one-off I really enjoyed.

Discussion for Chapters 1-7...

I'm not great at leading discussions, friends! 😂 Did you start the book? Any initial thoughts?

I rather like that we haven't jumped straight into action, yet we are getting little teasers that something big happened in Pi's life. I'm quite delighted with the writing style as well. Let me know what you all are thinking!!

Next Monday: Thru Chapter 37!!

@willaful @peanutnine @BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @Bookwormjillk

Bookwormjillk I started. I remember it feeling slow when I read it years ago, but like you the pace is good for me this time. It‘s a little funny and sarcastic too which I like. 2mo
peanutnine I'm enjoying it so far. I like the character building of these initial chapters 2mo
See All 8 Comments
willaful I'm finding the style very engaging. I was expecting something dense and difficult.

Interestingly enough, I was just reading an article by a teacher which mentioned teaching books in which the ending is revealed in the beginning -- we see they have survived a momentous adventure which left them changed. This fits right into that category.
2mo
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - It really helps me connect to a character when they have a sense of humor, and I'm finding Pi to be just very likable as a person and a narrator. 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @peanutnine - Yes, I feel like we are getting a good understanding of Pi's family. He does a great job with brief character sketches that still give you a good idea of what the person is like. 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @willaful - Oh yes, I rather enjoy books that have the ending at the beginning! You have this vague idea of what happened, then get all the little clues leading up to it as you read - and then I love to go back and read the beginning again! 2mo

Here's the #BookSpinBingo card! First, I put our official numbers (12 & 9) back in the mix. MORE INFO ⬇

2mo
TheAromaofBooks 4 & final - As a reminder, only the “official” BookSpin/DoubleSpin numbers will count towards giveaway entries. I don‘t want the giveaway to be stacked against people who aren‘t able to read lots of books each month. So basically there is still a maximum of 2 entries possible per month no matter how many books you read from your list. This bingo card is just for fun & glory! 😁

Thanks for playing & happy reading!!!
