You'll definitely need coffee if you attempt to read this epic Chinese poem - I made it to Chapter 45 and then read the chapter summaries, as each chapter was basically the different characters fighting each other over parts of the country after the Han dynasty fell.

2 ⭐ but it does #China #readingasia2021 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB So many books set in China and you chose this one 😅 2y
jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB 😂😂😂 it was the abridged version too! 120 chapters in total. 😂😂😂 2y
erzascarletbookgasm I salute you for trying to read this, so daunting! 😅 Which abridged translation did you read? 2y
jenniferw88 @erzascarletbookgasm the penguin classic edition, translated by Michael Palmer 2y
Librarybelle Way to go for giving it a try! 2y

Book One of this series. Translated from Danish and well done. Winston(an Illuminator)and Halfdan(a landless nobleman) travel to Oxford for a commission, but end up being charged by King Cnut to find a murderer. They have 3 days before the king meets with Danes, Saxons, Vikings and others to unite the country in peace.

TheSpineView Great job! 😀 3y

Mehso-so

This is definitely a case of “it is the audio narrator, not the book”. I listened to a Danish translation of this, and the narrator was quite boring. Even the most tense moments felt flat and like he was reading a recipe.

With that being said, it is a crazy story, and I can only imagine the impact it must have had on the survivors‘ lives.

BarbaraBB Everyone reads this book suddenly! Fomo! I am going to read it too if I can get hold of a copy for #ReadingAsia2021. 3y
Cinfhen It‘s really good @BarbaraBB sorry the narration was a dud, Katja. For me, the narration was part of the excitement 3y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Bad translations can ruin a book, I know what Katja means. It‘s the reason I hardly ever read Dutch translations of English books too. 3y
AlaMich That‘s a shame, because it is a gripping story. Maybe try again in English? 😊 3y
