The International Booker Prize Shortlist has been announced today

I loved On the Calculation of Volume so very happy to see that on the list.

I‘ve read Perfection, liked but didn‘t love as everyone else

Just bought A Leopard-Skin Hat so hope I like that

I‘ve seen some great reviews for Small Boat so might want to give that a chance too

What do you think of the shortlist?

ChaoticMissAdventures I am going to read Big Bird this week, I feel generally overwhelmed by the prize lists so waiting to hear what others say, I know Leopard Hat has some mixed reviews but it is the other one I am most interested in. Sad Reservoir Bitches did not make it, I thought it was wonderful (but lots of trigger warnings) 4h
AnneCecilie @ChaoticMissAdventures I‘m sad about that too, I loved Reservoir Bitches. Leopard Hat seems to be about grieving a sister so thought I should give it a try. I also have There‘s a Monster Behind the Door waiting for me even if it didn‘t make the shortlist 2h
BarbaraBB I enjoyed both books you did as well. And I read Leopard, which was just okayish for me. I am now reading Big Bird and really want to read Small Boat too. I preordered it, it has not yet been published here. 1h
AnneCecilie @BarbaraBB Now that you mention it, I think I‘ve only seen Americans reviewing Small Boat (edited) 1h

Technically, this is the first line of the first chapter, not the prologue, but… And I know it‘s late, but…
“Alexandra woke up a split second after her dark blue Skoda crossed the center line and drifted into the oncoming traffic.”

#InternationalBooker

This was good and frightening. A woman gets caught up in the 18th of November. Every morning she wakes up to the same day. She thinks of ways to escape and get on with her life. It is a quiet book, and somehow it felt believable. I do want to read part II!

sarahbarnes Excited for this one! Glad you liked it! 3d
Chelsea.Poole I just checked this out—surprised at how slim it is. Glad to see your stamp of approval 😊 3d
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes Your kind of book! 3d

#WeeklyForecast 14/25

I am about to start Somewhere Else of the #WP25 longlist. After that, I‘ll wait what books will be shortlisted and decide which ones to read. So far I am preferring the #InternationalBooker longlist over the #WP25 so I am having two more of that list lined up for this week!

squirrelbrain Have a great week! 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures I have Big Bird on my TBR for this week also! Hope you like it. 1w
Lesliereadsalot I have Big Bird on my radar too. PS 1/2 way thru Point Zero on your recommendation. Where the heck is Teiko‘s hubby? 1w

VanderMeer and his Southern Reach series is a study in the surreal. This installment is the ‘prequel‘. We start a point that still has anchor between Area X and the ‘lost coast‘ (Florida area, I think). We start with spies and gators and the creeping distortions of another universe. We are then transitioned into the spear provoking the events of Annihilation and beyond. Excellent. Must read other books before to fully enjoy this one.

It's the zombie apocalypse, but it's also a poetic allegory of grief, loss, depression, issues of memory, consumerism, probably a few things I missed. Somehow it works.
Passed it on to the Spouse and he loved it so much he already wants to read it again (and he almost never re-reads). Once I return it to the library I'm going to have to buy a copy to keep.

Reggie All you had to say was it‘s the zombie apocalypse….stacked!!! 3w
Leniverse @Reggie Just don't expect your regular zombie apocalypse. This one is narrated by one of the zombies! 2w

Tara Selter is stuck in November 18. That is every day when she wakes up its 11/18 (or 18/11 🇬🇧) , and everything repeats itself - the rainy weather near Lille, France, the sky, and people who wake fresh to their first 11/18, with no memory of the previous 11/18s.

It‘s a very curious book, with terrific atmosphere and yet many unanswered questions. It‘s the kind of book that makes me want to try writing.

sarahbarnes Ooh, great review. I‘m on the hold list for this one and looking forward to it. 3w
BarbaraBB Great review. I can‘t imagine it being a series! 3w

Graywacke @sarahbarnes 👍 I hope you get it soon. Also thanks 3w
Graywacke @BarbaraBB well, it leaves a lot to answer for. 🙂 I‘m wondering how it might evolve. Book 2 is available in English and I have a library copy. 3w
AnneCecilie @BarbaraBB As you read on it makes perfect sense. I‘m sitting here waiting for the 6th volume to be released. I think it‘s supposed to be 7 volumes 3w
Graywacke @AnneCecilie ooh! You‘ve read them in Danish? I think seven are planned. Five released in original language. 3w
AnneCecilie @Graywacke No, translated into Norwegian, but the Scandinavian countries usually translate each other‘s bestsellers pretty fast 3w
BarbaraBB @AnneCecilie I hope I‘ll enjoy it I‘d love a good Danish series to look forward to! (edited) 3w
Graywacke @AnneCecilie that makes sense. And cool 3w

My picks to read from the International Booker Prize 2025: the Dutch one: On a Woman‘s Madness by Astrid Roemer, and the Danish one: On the Calculation of Volume I.

This is the only book, so far, off the Booker International Longlist at my library. It was lyrical and propulsive although I‘m not sure I totally understand what was really going on. Even with the ambiguous ending I enjoyed it and am looking forward to Volume 2.

BarbaraBB Good to know. I have this one on my shelves to pick up soon. 4w

Reading the 2024 winner of the Ursula K Le Guin Prize. That's a strong opening!

vivastory Sounds interesting. The first couple of sentences remind me of the opening of Butler's Kindred. 4w
Leniverse @vivastory In style I think it's more Max Porter than Octavia Butler. The narrator is depressed and has stuffed a dead crow into a hollow space excavated from beneath their ribcage. 4w
vivastory Sounds pretty wild. Adding to my tbr 4w
