Mixed feelings about my first 2025 read. The writing, the ingredients, this strange family: all was there to create a great story. But we only follow two of the siblings and we don‘t even get to know them that well, let alone the other family members. There are no real answers and while this may resemble real life, it‘s not what I expect after almost 500 pages. #ToB25Longlist

CBee Happy New Year, my friend ♥️♥️♥️ 1d
Cathythoughts Oh I bailed early on this one. I just didn‘t like the whole vibe of it. 1d
BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts I should‘ve known! 1d

BarbaraBB @CBee Thank you! You too my friend! 🩷🤍 1d
Cathythoughts But there was some good writing, it was promising…. Except for some characters 🙄 1d
Megabooks Yes!! Thank you!! You took the words out of my mouth!! Happy new year dear B! 21h
Hooked_on_books I‘m waffling on whether or not to read this one. My library doesn‘t have it, so I have it saved in my Libro wishlist in case I decide to use a credit and go for it. We shall see. 21h
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I read your review and feel exactly the same. It didn‘t deliver - while it absolutely could have. 16h
CarolynM Crossing this off my list, then🙂 13h
BarbaraBB @CarolynM Many people loved it so maybe you would too! 11h

I am reading the Marrs, which is always a good idea when on vacation. Next will be the tagged, a Christmas gift from Meg. I also hope to read another #ToB25Longlist book, Wolf at the Table.

Three sisters are destroyed by the death of their fourth sister. All three deal (or don‘t) in their own way, not looking out for each other because being together makes them feel so incomplete without Nicky. Their stories make a raw and tender portrait of grief and unconditional love.

Suet624 Lovely photo!! 2w
julesG Not sure how long you're staying in Frankfurt but I remember a large bookshop (one of the chain stores, Hugendubel or Meyersche probably) with a very good selection of English books on the main shopping mile. 2w
BarbaraBB @julesG Thanks, I‘ll share that with my host, who‘s an avid reader as well. However, we‘re just passing through and will continue to Lausanne today (before the snow hopefully!)😘 (edited) 2w

julesG Enjoy!!! Are you staying in Lausanne for the holidays? 2w
BarbaraBB @julesG thanks! Just for the night as well, tomorrow to the French side of Lake Geneva where we‘ll stay for the holidays! Have good ones too Julia 🤍 2w
sarahbarnes Beautiful picture and review! I‘m on the hold list for this one and looking forward to it. Enjoy your holiday travels! 🩵 2w

I so enjoyed this one. Dolly Alderton writes from a man‘s perspective after his break-up with Jen and it felt completely believable and funny. I felt for him and felt sorry they didn‘t make it.
Then the perspective changes and we learn Jen‘s take on things. All the pieces fell into place. A light and hopeful read. Recommended! #ToB25Longlist

Cathythoughts Stacked of course 👍🏻😁 3w
ChaoticMissAdventures I have been meaning to get to this one, did you read, it sounds a lot like 3w
sarahbarnes On the list for this one at the library. Glad to see you liked it. Beautiful photo! 🌲 3w

BarbaraBB @ChaoticMissAdventures I didn‘t like Fleishman much to be honest (I do have higher hopes of Long Island Conpromise though) because there was so much complaining about money while they were loaded.. this one is more recognizable to me personally. 3w
BarbaraBB @Cathythoughts @sarahbarnes It won‘t win literary prizes but it is real good comfort reading imo! 3w
Suet624 Oh good. Its next in my list so I‘m glad you liked it. 3w
merelybookish I finished this last week. I also enjoyed. Might have found it a wee bit too long. And the structure definitely reminded me of 3w
BarbaraBB @merelybookish I must have erased that book from my mind because I didn‘t like it but @ChaoticMissAdventures said so too! 3w
BarbaraBB @sarahbarnes @Suet624 I hope you both will like it. Reviews are mixed! 3w

I loved this, it was brilliant, but then maybe it is something only another Classicist would love? I have beef with the blurb calling it a comedy, it is def a tragedy, if a madcap one, and it is about POWs being forced to perform in order to eat, so rather brutal for even dark comedy. But there were still some flashes of beauty, and I appreciate the decisions the author made in plot and execution. #tob25 #tob25longlist

Larkken If the dialect is weird for you in print, I recommend the audiobook read by the author. Syracusans with Irish accents make sense to me now, what can I say. 4w

Margo is a single mom and, not surprisingly, she‘s got money troubles. Becoming active on OnlyFans means financial security for herself and her baby but there are many more insecurities. You have to root for Margo and her team, consisting of father Jinx (a pro wrestler), roommate Suzy and influencers KC and Rose. A fun read and a light pick for me. #ToB25Longlist

squirrelbrain Great photo! ❤️ 4w
Suet624 These days I‘m really enjoying lighter reads. 😊 4w

#ToB25Longlist In the 1st part of the book a woman, living in a Paris apartment, is coming to terms with a miscarriage and the fact that her husband works in London.
The 2nd part is set in the same apartment, years earlier. A couple lives there and the wife is very much into female liberation
Both parts are terrific. The 3rd part is a continuation of the 1st and that one fell a bit short. I‘m not sure what it adds even though it was engaging

Ruthiella You take the best pictures! 🤩 1mo
squirrelbrain Looking forward to this one! 1mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I am going to pick this up, I am trying to pick #ToB 25 that might show up on the Women's prize list and this sounds right up their alley. 1mo

BarbaraBB @Ruthiella Thank you 🤍 1mo
BarbaraBB @ChaoticMissAdventures It‘s good and indeed very possible to end up on the women‘s prize list as well! 1mo
Megabooks Sounds better than I thought it would. I‘m interested but it‘s expensive here! 1mo
Suet624 The important question though is are you left handed? I can't take a photo with my left hand. :) 1mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 Funny question, I never realized that. I am right handed but do a lot of thinks with my left hand. I used to smoke left handed too 😉. No idea why I take my photos that way, I do it automatically I notice! 1mo
Suet624 That‘s funny. 1mo
Megabooks I‘m left handed and smoked left handed, but a lot of righties do here because they learned to smoke out the window while driving. Hmmm… 4w
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I did that too 😀 but I smoked earlier than I learned how to drive(we can have driving lessons from 17 and have our licenses at 18). 4w

#ToB25Longlist

Millennials in a Midwestern university town, unhappy with their situation, or maybe not but everyone is feeling sorry for themselves anyway and nagging and complaining about their situation (just like in The New Me, Halle Butler‘s other book I read).
Nothing much happens and it is kind of engaging but definitely not worth to be shortlisted.

NB Why is there a visiting artist? What does he add to the book? I really have no clue!

squirrelbrain I‘m getting this from the library. Luckily, going by your review! 🤣 1mo
Cathythoughts I‘m not rushing out 👍🏻 1mo

In between the space of time when Ezra lights themself on fire in front of the Trump Tower and when Ezra dies, life flashes before their eyes. People Ezra loved, people who left or betrayed them, places they‘ve felt at home or estranged, good and bad feelings of being queer. Written in short fragments , Ezra dissolves into everything that made them into the person that‘s decided on this final act of protest.

#ToB25Longlist A light pick

Suet624 Gulp. Um..... so not exactly a Christmas read? 😬 1mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 Ha! No not really. It‘s quite sad, not really festive 😉 1mo
squirrelbrain Thanks for the tag Barbara! I have ordered this one, second-hand off Amazon, so it‘s coming later this week. I had the feeling it might be a ‘typical‘ ToB read…. 😬 1mo

I still need to look and see which I'd like to read, but here is a list of ones I have & ones I own. Since I was so scant on doing reviews parts of this year I've marked the ones I loved (top pick!) and ones that were still fantastic (HM - honorable mention). I honestly didn't think I would've read so many because I've read more nonfiction and fewer books overall this year. ToB and I just must've been on the same wavelength. #tob25 #tob25longlist

Megabooks Sorry I didn't do a cool graphic. 😔 1mo
BkClubCare Whoa - you have read a lot! Very 😎 1mo
Deblovestoread Wow you have been on the same wavelength! Love seeing your top picks. 💜 1mo

Ruthiella I think that the ToB is very much on your wavelength this year…though, on the other hand, following the ToB has also maybe influenced my reading too and maybe yours as well? 🤔 (edited) 1mo
squirrelbrain I agree with a lot of your top picks! 1mo
Chelsea.Poole You‘ve read so many! 1mo
Megabooks I also own Good Material. Whoops! 1mo
Megabooks @BkClubCare Thanks! I've got to give a lot of credit to @aardvarkbookclub for having several as picks and my local library, too! 1mo
Megabooks @Deblovestoread Thanks! I'm really digging the longlist this year. I'm already reading one on hoopla tonight and have several I'm looking into buying. 1mo
Megabooks @Ruthiella OTH? I'm having trouble with that abbreviation for some reason. But year, I think I was just into weird books this year....wait that's every year! 🙃 1mo
Megabooks @squirrelbrain Yay! I was really pleased with this longlist. I wonder what will be on the short one?? 1mo
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole I am shocked by that because I didn't read nearly as many books as other years (like over 100 fewer), and I had quite the memoir/nonfiction year, too. 1mo
Ruthiella OTH = on the other hand. 😊 1mo
Megabooks @Ruthiella why did I not know that one??? 😩🤣 yeah, maybe we all just like weird books and have found our people here. 💙 1mo
BarbaraBB You are definitely on the same wavelength, wow, so impressive! Thanks for adding your favorites and HMs. So helpful 🩷 1mo
