Snowy, slushy day here in western NY and I‘m feeling nostalgic. This was one of my very favorite books as a child, one I borrowed again and again from the library. Years later, I bought that very copy in the library book sale!

Tamra So beautiful! 2y

The Moonlight School shines a light on adult literacy. It's based on the true story of Cora Wilson Stewart set in the hills of Kentucky in 1911. Highly recommended.

A good mix of magical realism & mystery. I didn't want to put this down & would definitely shelve it as “cozy“. The atmosphere of the woods & small town just hit the spot & I loved the quirky characters. The writing is really good & descriptive. The pace is a little slow & there is a lot of setup, so some readers may get bogged down. An enjoyable tale with a little bit of tension & a small town with a good mix of good & evil. Cozy up & enjoy.

Christian historical fiction based on the real life woman who brought literacy to adults in the hills of Kentucky. Very interesting, not really preachy for those who don‘t want a heavy handed message.

megnews I have all these on my tbr but my first choice is A Memory of Violets. I‘ve had it on my tbr forever. 4y
Crazeedi Memory of violets would be my choice 4y
Chrissyreadit I‘m leaning toward A moonlit school or The Nature of Fragile Things. But I would read any of them I think- except I don‘t love books that break my heart or have sad endings and The Darkest Child and A memory of violets worry me.... 4y
CoffeeNBooks My vote is for Memory of Violets. I really liked the last book I read by Hazel Gaynor. 4y
Deblovestoread I vote Memory of Violets. I already have it and I enjoyed the Last Christmas in Paris by her. 4y
catebutler You always make it so hard to choose! ☺️ I‘m going with 4y
shellleigh33 They all sound awesome to me so I am good with any one of them that gets chosen 4y
megnews @Kdgordon88 I didn‘t realize that was the same author! 4y
sblbooks @megnews @Kdgordon88 Yes, I enjoyed that one. The girl who came home is my favorite so far. 4y

This newest release takes us to 1911 eastern Kentucky where 1/3 of the county is illiterate or semi-illiterate. Learning about the life in the Appalachian Mountains during this time period was fascinating. This book will appeal to historical fiction fans and to anyone passionate about literacy.

I received the book via Celebrate Lit Tours and all opinions are solely my own.

Bell Elkins is a prosecutor in small town #WestVirginia. Books 1 & 2 in this series were great, 3 was a little weird, and this is book 4. It was unsatisfying. The story itself was ultimately interesting, but Bell here is judgmental, self-absorbed, and suddenly pro-coal. Plus she‘s committing prosecutorial misconduct, though the book doesn‘t call it that. I think this series is played out for me.

Librarybelle That‘s a shame! At least one more state checked off the list! 5y
Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle Yeah, I hate it when a series goes off the rails. But only 6 states to go! 5y
ljuliel You guys are doing well.... looks like I might have to restart this one for next year if I decide to do a challenge. My reading has pretty much gone off the rails . Hoping to yank a knot in my tail and get myself back on track. 5y

ljuliel Funny, I just posted when you did. We both use OFF THE RAILS in our comments. 🚂 5y
Hooked_on_books @ljuliel Ha ha, trains on the brain! I say keep going with the challenge. No need to keep it just to this year. That‘s arbitrary anyway. Of course, if you‘ve stopped having fun with it, then it makes sense to throw in the towel. Whichever, I hope your reading gets back on track! 5y
squirrelbrain Sounds a bit blah.... but only 6 to go - yay! 5y
LeahBergen Someone looks exhausted. 😆😆 5y
Hooked_on_books @LeahBergen These dogs have *such* difficult lives, you know. 🙄😆 5y
Pamwurtzler Oh good choice! I have that first one on my TBR bit probably won‘t read past that one 5y
Hooked_on_books @Pamwurtzler The first one‘s really good and you‘d be in good shape with the second one, too. And as far as I remember the books don‘t leave anything hanging, so you can drop out of the series without too much frustration. 5y
