I stopped buying gifts for my niblings years ago. They have all the stuff they could ever want. I buy savings bonds to put a few dollars away for their futures for birthdays and Christmas. So here I am bundled up and ready to sleep instead of being out shopping with the crowds.
pickIt was a strange feeling to read this story about German POWs in lower Michigan during WWII. I never knew POW camps existed in Michigan until I was an adult, and to discover this story has a connection to the teeny (teeny) tiny town I spent my early childhood in was just bizarre. I enjoyed the verse and the POVs of these two characters. I did not enjoy the very abrupt ending, though it's certainly fitting in any book on WWII.

I LOVED Kit Pearson when I was a kid, and I know I read this one a couple times (I was a big re-reader) but I don't remember much beyond its boarding school setting. @Karisimo
so-soHmmm. I should have remembered that while I adore reading picture books as an adult, I rarely enjoy children's chapter books. I did get a few picture book recommendations out of the early chapters! Of those chapter books covered by the author, I can only remember reading Charlotte's Web as a child, and I'm not sure I ever read the other exemplars provided. 1/?
