Is it just me or was anyone else bothered by the amount of 'touching' in this story? Lots of fingers being suddenly intertwined without there having been any character or relationship development. A cute read still 3.5 🌟

Fledgling: A Novel | Octavia E. Butler

Pickpick

This was a book about vampires, but it was really social commentary in the best Octavia Butler way. One thing that bothered me was the main character was 57 but appeared to be around 10 and had physical relationships with several full grown adults. I‘m sure Butler meant something genius and spot on with this choice but it went right over my head because all I could think was ick. #Screamathon #DiversifyYourHorrorShelves #OutstandingOctober book1/5

KatieDid927 My take is that she was turning the typical trope on its head. Okay, she looks a certain way, but she‘s in her 50s. I think the stereotypical 200+ old male vampire aggressively pursuing actual human children (Twilight, Buffy, every vampire story ever) is significantly worse, and I think that‘s what she was inverting and challenging. 2y
Bookwormjillk @KatieDid927 ah, interesting. I wouldn‘t have picked up on that because as a rule I NEVER read vampire books. The thought of drinking blood makes me 🤢 I only gave this one a chance because it‘s Octavia Butler. 2y
KatieDid927 @Bookwormjillk Oh, interesting! I'm a big vampire nerd and am really into vampire lore, so that's where I went with it. That's my personal interpretation, anyway. 2y
Bookwormjillk @KatieDid927 it makes a lot of sense! 2y

Okay look at these cheesy ass cover...How could I resist this book? 😆😆 Started it tonight and it's pretty good so far! Description: Lesbian sci-fi story that takes place on another planet and creates a forbidden, stars-crossed lovers situation between the leader of the elite oligarchy and a member of an anarchist group. 🙌🏽❤️👍🏽‼️👌🏼💁🏻👀

Zelma That sounds awesome. Don't you hate when you have to tell people to ignore the cover? 😆 8y
BookishFeminist This sounds like some inspiration for that new space opera we were going to write with @shortstack! 😂 8y
brendanmleonard That sounds way better than the cover! 🤘 = the emoji for revolution. 8y

Megabooks Yes, the cover sucks!! Is there any land on the planet on the cover? Hmmm.... Other than that, it seems you've found something cool. #dontjudgeabook 8y
Bibliogeekery Sounds interesting! I feel like I'm read the male version of this book right now called Castor. It's not in the Litsy catalogue. #queerbooks #queerscifi 8y
Yamich49 @Zelma Yes! Although I do kind of love cheesy covers - but I'm sure they turn off a lot of potential readers/buyers. 😆 8y
Yamich49 @BookishFeminist Right?!? I'll take some notes as I read through it so we can get some inspiration for our story! 😉😆 8y
Yamich49 @brendanmleonard Right? 🤘🏼 8y
Yamich49 @Ebooksandcooks You know, that's a good question. It's kind of hard to tell- it's not a very detailed picture of the planet. Maybe it'll end up being about two giant aliens with only heads who make out in space above landless planets? 😂 8y
Yamich49 @Bibliogeekery It is pretty interesting so far. With that premise, it would be difficult to write a boring story but we shall see. This one is missing the "The" in the title on Litsy so it was a bit hard to find. Castor sounds interesting, I only recently got into sci fi books so I'm always happy to get new recs. Especially for #queerscifi! 8y
