This question came at a most opportune time as I read it today for the #CHILDRENSCLASSICREAD2026 led by @TheBookHippie. I'm going to go further than this book, though and state that I find eternal hope in many children's literature books. My ultimate would be THE TRUMPET OF THE SWAN by E.B. White, but as I finished this one, I chose it. I'm going to have to read more children's literature this year to survive. 💚

CHEERFUL by Palmer Brown is a quietly affirming children‘s book that treats longing and change with warmth and reassurance. The story follows a small city mouse who feels drawn toward a life in the country that would better suit him. Brown‘s delicate illustrations reinforce this outlook, depicting both city and countryside as welcoming spaces within a generous world. ⬇️

Cheerful is a mouse who longs to live in the country described in a song his mother sings.

Also, I apparently read this a few years ago, and only realised this due to looking it up on litsy to mark it as currently reading when I started it.
I think this little church mouse took the scenic route from Michigan or maybe stopped for a few nibbles along the way, but he finally made it to Calif! 😂🪤Thx so much, Christine! 😘 I‘m so excited about your upcoming #ChildrensClassicRead2026 and this adorable book! 2026 may be the Cat & Mouse year since I‘m looking forward to Cheerful, The Blue Cat of Castletown and The Mouse of Amherst! 😹🐁
