I enjoyed the story; a bit overwrought. Book 9 of 2024

Painting “People”, currently on show at Wichita Art Museum #WAM (just a photo on my phone)

Ephemera Is the painting by Thomas Hart Benton? 2mo
BkClubCare @Ephemera - maybe?! I forgot to note it and couldn‘t find when I searched. But I do recall thinking Benton, but NO. Of course, I could be misremembering THAT, too. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo

Hard but so moving.

One of the tougher WWII historical fictions I've read lately - but I hate when the war is romanticised so no complaints from me on that front. Each sister has such a compelling story that kept me listening.

Tamra What a lovely puzzle! 4mo
janeycanuck @Tamra It was a fun one to do! 4mo

This one broke me. I cried so hard. I really recommend this book. I hear it should be a movie soon with the Fanning sisters, Dakota and Elle, which I would watch. It‘s about the German invasion on France and the Holocaust. It talks about the ladies who helped hide and save Jewish children during WWII. Heartbreaking 💔

LoverOfLearning Reading this nowa almost halfway. Loving it already even though I know I will be shattered. 3mo
Beachbum @LoverOfLearning My heart broke for every main character who was impacted in this story by Love - doing it all for Love 💔 (without giving nothing away) 2mo
LoverOfLearning @Beachbum 😭😭😭 I'm at like chapter 20. I've heard chapter 22 is Gut-wrenching and I'm not sure I'm prepared. 2mo
Beachbum @LoverOfLearning that was me, I wasn‘t sure if I was ready for the next chapter 💔😢😭Sister protecting sister, Neighbor protecting bestie, protecting child, lover protecting lover, this had me heart all over the place. And at the end….💔 2mo
LoverOfLearning @Beachbum right 😭 but man I loved it. 2mo

“What did you do in the war, Mom?”

“I survived,” I say quietly.

I am a mother and mothers don‘t have the luxury of falling apart in front of their children, even when they are afraid, even when their children are adults.

She knew now that no one could be neutral—not anymore—and as afraid as she was of risking Sophie‘s life, she was suddenly more afraid of letting her daughter grow up in a world where good people did nothing to stop evil, where a good woman could turn her back on a friend in need. She reached for the toddler, took him in her arms.

My most favourite part of the book was when Captain Beck billet at Vianne‘s home. Somehow, he took care of Vianne and was a pleasant man. They probably had feelings for each other.

My least favourite part of the book was when Vianne had to part with a certain someone.

What I will remember most about this book was when Vianne tied strings to the tree at the front of her house to symbolize each person who was important in her life and had left.
