I love how Frantzen goes from "Foucault missed a lot in The History of Sexuality when it comes to the medieval era" (true) to "so all of queer theory is stupid and invalid and also they probably said something mean to me". I don't even care. I usually like academic pettiness, but this has been going on for 21 pages! I'm not out of the fucking intro yet. Do your own work instead of bitching at everyone else. Jesus fuck.

annamatopoetry The last three pages were devoted to the book itself and what is was going to do? I'm sure it'll be fascinating, but also ugh the first 90% could have been summarized down to four pages. 2d
annamatopoetry Ok, once the book actually starts it's much better, but I'm still waiting for the medieval history. Currently we're doing 19th and 20th c opera? 2d

It's probably not a good sign when I'm irritated with the author before even leaving the introduction.
More soon.

annamatopoetry I'm now on page 17 of "why everyone else sucks", with another 18 to go. Just say what you're gonna say, oh my fucking god. 2d

Current read. Every page offers something fresh - a reflection, consideration. I am loving it. P22 “as Virginia Woolf well knew, “killing the angel in the house was part of the occupation of a woman writer.” The violence was necessary; without it, that Angel - sympathetic, charming, unselfish (if there was a chicken she would take the leg; if there was a draft she‘d sit in it) - would have plucked the heart out of my writing.”

Pickpick

There were so many points in this book that were ah-ha moments, and then once I thought about them they shouldn‘t have been. It‘s obvious. We just don‘t think about them because this is what movies, fairytales, and society have sold us - especially women - from birth. This is a real discussion starter.

GingerAntics If the conversations this book starts make you uncomfortable, it‘s time to evaluate why you‘re uncomfortable instead of writing this off as radical or feminist or woke. #JaneWard #TheTragedyOfHeterosexuality #audiobook #discussionstarter 3w
jewright I‘m listening to Jesus and John Wayne right now. I‘m wondering if this book has similar topics. 3w

This seems so obvious, and yet it‘s just not true for A LOT of men. I‘m certainly not saying every man, but the loudest, most vocal, most powerful men certainly. Not to mention all the men who look up to those men as the ideal of manhood and masculinity.

TheBookHippie A man attaches himself to woman - not to enjoy her, but to enjoy himself.

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie she was actually comparing heterosexual ideals to queer ones. That in heterosexual culture it‘s about what is most pleasurable to the man, not is pleasurable for the woman, ever. In queer culture it‘s how much pleasure a body can experience. Full stop. She was baffled by a survey where every straight man said sex was over when he came. She said “I can‘t imagine sex with my wife being over just because either of us came.” 🤣😂🤣 3w
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie basically, the whole books can be boiled down to “straight men think they are entitled to sex” and “heterosexuals, are you okay?” 3w
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics exactly. Men think sex is for them. That‘s it. Women are an object to achieve it whether they want it or not. 3w
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie yup! I loved this book. It was just a little snarky, just a little funny, but very poignant and important. 3w
